Badgers avoid scare, move on in conference tournament

The University of Wisconsin Men’s Basketball team needed every basket they got as they were able to hold on for the win in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament. Despite a furious Penn State comeback, the Badgers were able to force a turnover on the Nittany Lions' attempt at winning the game at the buzzer. For Penn State, this would put a damper on their 17-2 run in the final seven minutes. This run cut into a lead that was as many as 18 points with eight minutes left in the game, and 73-57 with five minutes to go. Penn State’s Sam Sessoms scored 13 points in the final seven minutes, as he ended the night with 18.

The groundwork for the Badgers once comfortable lead was done when Wisconsin had their own 23-5 run to close the first half, including a three pointer at the buzzer by Aleem Ford. Wisconsin would then go into the halftime break up 41-31. Ford was the Badgers leading scorer on the night with 17 points and a 5-6 effort from three point range. Other top scorers for Wisconsin include Brad Davison with 15 and Jonathan Davis with 10.

Thursday’s victory puts the Badgers at a 17-11 record on the season. Wisconsin advances to the tournament’s quarterfinal round to take on Luka Garza and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Wisconsin is yet to beat Iowa this season, losing on February 18th by a score of 77-62 and on Iowa’s March 7th Senior Night, when the Hawkeyes won 77-73. Iowa’s record is 20-7. Tip-off is scheduled for Friday at 8:00 P.M. CST.
