Volleyball: Clippers, Pioneers share Packerland crown

In a much-anticipated matchup between the Sturgeon Bay and Sevastopol volleyball teams on Monday, it was the Clippers who won to secure a share of the conference title. Sturgeon Bay also captured the regular-season sweep. The first set went the Pioneers way, as they would take it 25-22. Sturgeon Bay took care of business in the second set with a 25-13 win. Sturgeon Bay took the match lead in the third set with a 25-16 win. Sevastopol wouldn’t go away, however, as they’d even the match at two sets apiece in a 25-21 victory.

In the set to decide the Packerland regular-season crown, the Clippers would take back control and win 15-10 in set five. The Clippers were led in kills by Hannah Sternard and Carly Wodack with 14 each, Lauren Alger contributed 19 assists and Hannah Sternard had a great night as a backstop with 32 digs. For Sevastopol, Madi Volkmann and Sam Differt led the way with 16 kills each, Emma Stueber had 17 assists and 3 aces, Rebekah Andreae had a handful of blocks, and Bailey Rikkola had 23 digs.

Sturgeon Bay is 7-3 on the season and Sevastopol is 10-3. Both teams are 4-1 in conference play,  which is the Pioneers and the Clippers will share the Packerland title. Sturgeon Bay will take on Green Bay East on Tuesday, while Sevastopol will look to rebound against Gresham Community on Thursday.

In other Packerland Conference action, Kewaunee will visit Southern Door and Algoma battling Gibraltar with the opening serves slated for 7 p.m.

A previous version of this story had Sturgeon Bay as the sole Packerland Conference champion. Packerland Conference Commissioner Mike Holtz has informed the Clippers and the Pioneers that they will share the title as a result of their 4-1 conference records. We apologize for the confusion.
