Volleyball: Area teams season comes to close

Sevastopol’s memorable Spring season ended with a 1-1 day at the sectional tournament and a chance to participate in the sectional championship. In the first match, Sevastopol swept Mayville, winning the first set 26-24. The next two sets were more lopsided with wins of 25-11 and 25-15.

In the match to win sectionals, the Pioneers took St. Mary’s Springs to four sets. The first set went 27-25 in Springs’ favor, the next set would go Sevastopol’s way with a 25-18 win. In set three and set four it would be Springs on top with a 25-21 and 25-20 victory. The Pioneers finish the season with a 14-4 record and a runner-up finish at the sectional tournament.

Algoma’s improbable run would fall short in the championship match. To begin sectionals, they beat Gresham Community in four sets. They took the first two sets 25-20 and 25-19 before Gresham got on the board with a 25-21 victory to stay alive. It would be all Algoma in set four as they rolled for a 25-6 win.

In the title, Algoma would fall to Washburn 25-11, 25-15, and 25-6. Algoma would go from a struggling regular season to a mighty postseason run. The Wolves are recognized as sectional runner-ups.
