Sports notes: McHugh in finals, track teams head to regionals

Max McHugh is one step closer to Tokyo after Sunday's U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, McHugh swam a pair of personal bests Sunday to advance to the final in the men's 100-yard breaststroke. He registered the fifth-fastest time with a 59.68 in the semifinal heat. The top-seed is Michael Andrew after swimming a time of 58.14.

Luxemburg-Casco and Kewaunee's trap shooting teams competed in the state trap shoot meet over the weekend. They shot a 476, nine birds behind the eventual state champion.

Luxemburg-Casco's fishing team had a strong showing at its state tournament in LaCrosse. The team consisting of Charlie Simonar and Ethan Jerabek finished in 7th place out of 21 teams. The top three high school teams even outfished some of the college squads competing.

The area's track teams will begin their own road to LaCrosse on Monday with their respective WIAA Regional meets. Kewaunee, Luxemburg-Casco, Southern Door, and Sturgeon Bay head to Little Chute to face the host school, Two Rivers, Wrightstown, and Denmark.  Algoma, Gibraltar, and Sevastopol head to Hilbert to face the host school Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran/Providence Academy, Howards Grove, Manitowoc Lutheran, Mishicot, Reedsville, Roncalli, and Sheboygan Area Lutheran. The first events are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Hilbert and 4:15 p.m. in Little Chute. Sectional qualifiers in Hilbert head to Rosholt and sectional qualifiers in Little Chute go to Fox Valley Lutheran for Thursday meets.
