A bill that could’ve widened exceptions for WIAA athletics eligibility for pandemic-related transfer students has been vetoed by Governor Tony Evers. A bill was passed this summer that would have voided the one-year wait to play sports for students who transfer schools without changing addresses. The bill was manufactured to give exemptions to students who transferred because of their school moving to virtual learning. Opponents of the bill cited unknown effects it has on student-athletes already at the school that one is attempting to transfer and play sports at. Current WIAA states that freshman and sophomores who transfer in at the beginning of the school year do not have any restrictions. Juniors are restricted to non-varsity competition and seniors can only practice.
