Phoenix teams struggle to close out games, men back in action Friday

The opportunities were there, but neither Green Bay Phoenix basketball team were able to capture success in their games on Thursday.

In a Friday afternoon matinee at the Jersey Mike's Classic in St. Petersburg, Florida, the Phoenix men saw a halftime lead slip away as UNC-Greensboro hit a game-winning layup to steal the game 60-58. Newcomer Donovan Ivory led the Phoenix with 19 points including a trio of three-pointers while Manny Ansong chipped in another 11 points. The Phoenix men are back in action Friday night as they face Florida International at 7 p.m.

The Phoenix women just could never come all the way back in its 61-52 loss to Northern Kentucky at the Kress Center. The Norse would build leads of nine to 12 points, only to have the Phoenix whittle away at them. The Norse's defense clamped down on the Phoenix, allowing them to only shoot 30 percent from the field as they would rebuild their leads.  Hailey Oskey led the Phoenix with19 points while Maddy Schreiber added 11 points off the bench. Luxemburg-Casco alum Cassie Schiltz scored six points and collected six rebounds in the loss. The Phoenix women play again Saturday at home against Wright State.
