Boys' basketball round-up: Luxemburg-Casco falls to Freedom on 96.7 WBDK

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartan boys’ basketball team could not overcome a fierce Freedom Irish squad on Thursday night and fell 60-42 in a North Eastern Conference game in Luxemburg.  The Spartans started slowly as Freedom jumped to an 11-1 lead in the first three minutes.  Rallying by going on a 21 to 11 run, the Spartans were able to tie the game up at 22-22.  Freedom responded with a run of their own finishing the half with a three-pointer by Blake Kortz to take a 29-23 lead into halftime.

The Irish came out on fire in the second half and put L-C away early by forcing numerous turnovers and converting on transition baskets to build up an insurmountable lead.

Freedom was led by Landon VanCalster with 20 points, with 15 coming in the decisive second half.  Kortz added 17 including a slam dunk to open the scoring in the game.   The Spartans’ Peyton Mrotek scored 21 points while Jack Rollins added nine more, but it was not enough to overcome the Irish.(5-1. 9-2 overall).

Luxemburg-Casco (2-4, 4-5) will now take on Denmark next Monday, before returning home to play Wrightstown next Friday in the next broadcasted game.  Matt Piesler and Paul Schmitt will have the call with the pregame set for 6:30 pm on 96.7 FM WBDK and tip off shortly after 7 pm from Luxemburg-Casco High School. The game will also be streamed on New Radio Sports Network.

In other boys' basketball action on Thursday, Sturgeon Bay fell on the road to Green Bay East 67-44. Gibraltar's game against Goodman/Pembine was postponed due to medical concerns in Pembine. The game has been rescheduled for February 8th.

No games are scheduled for Friday after Algoma's contest against Green Bay West was called off.
