Phoenix men can't catch Vikings, women play at Milwaukee

The Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team held on for as long as they could on Sunday afternoon but it was not enough as the Cleveland State Vikings left the Kress Center with the 79-67 victory.

The younger Phoenix squad kept the league's best team close for much of the game despite the Vikings holding a distinct advantage on the glass. With the Vikings carrying a six-point lead into the break and for the opening minutes of the second half, the Phoenix went on a 10-2 run that gave them a two-point advantage with under 10 minutes to play. The Vikings went on an 8-0 run to answer and never let the lead go again. Cade Meyer showed a strong inside game to lead the Phoenix with 20 points while Kamari McGee poured in 16 of his own points. The Phoenix will finish the season on the road against UIC and IUPUI before the Horizon League Tournament.

It is a similar path for the Phoenix women, who will start a three-game road trip Monday night when they play at Milwaukee. The Phoenix is riding a 10-game winning streak, which includes a home win against the Panthers earlier this month. They swept a pair of games against UIC on Thursday and IUPUI on Saturday to be percentage points out of first place in the Horizon League. The Panthers beat UIC on Saturday after falling to IUPUI on Thursday. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
