Packers boot punter, cut Cobb's pay to get under the cap

The Green Bay Packers had to use some fancy accounting to get underneath the cap before the start of the new league year.

The Packers let P Corey Bojorquez walk despite being one of the lone bright spots on the team's special teams last season. LB Oren Burks, WR Equanimeous St. Brown, LB De'Vondre Campbell, CB Rasul Douglas, T Dennis Kelly, CB Kevin King, DL Tyler Lancaster, LB Whitney Mercilus, CB Chandon Sullivan, TE Robert Tonyan, and WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling also hit the open market.

G Lucas Patrick did as well, but he immediately agreed to a new contract with the Chicago Bears. Members of the Packers beat have already reported that Campbell will be rejoining the Packers on a new deal while Burks announced his social media channels that he would be heading west to play for the 49ers.

The Packers placed a second-round tender on WR Allen Lazard, setting the asking price for his services as a restricted free agent.

The team also shaved off several millions of dollars off of the contract of WR Randall Cobb, who is now due to make $3 million.

Free agency officially kicked off Wednesday afternoon, setting the stage for a hectic week of moves by all 32 NFL teams.
