Badgers survive against Colgate

In the last first-round NCAA tournament game Friday night the #3 seeded Wisconsin Badgers advanced with a narrow 67-60 win over #14 Colgate Raiders in Milwaukee.

The Badgers started the game slowly going one for nine from the field and falling behind 9-2 to the Raiders before tying the game at 15-15.  The game see-sawed the rest of the first half as Colgate’s Nelly Cummings scored on a reverse layup at the buzzer to tie the game at 28-28 going into intermission.

The second half saw a flurry of scoring with Colgate warming up from the three-point arc and the Badgers scoring mainly in the paint.  Colgate led by as much as five points in the second half and the game stayed close until Wisconsin went on a 10-0 run over six minutes putting the Badgers up 58-52 with under four minutes to play.  The Badgers then finished the Raiders off with suffocating defense and Johnny Davis coming up big in the final minutes.

Davis scored a game-high 25 points with 17 coming in the decisive second half.  Cummings led the way for Colgate with 20 points.

The Badgers will now face #11 Iowa State on Sunday at Fiserv Forum in the Midwest Regional final.
