Warren Homers & Jarvis Strikes Out Ten in Wisconsin Win After Dropping Postponed Game

Kernels Beat Wisconsin 6-2 in Conclusion of Tuesday’s game

The Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon in the conclusion of Tuesday’s suspended game at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  The loss ended Wisconsin’s five-game winning streak

Cedar Rapids (45-25 overall, 2-2 second half) had a 5-0 lead when the game was halted on Tuesday night.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand hit a two-run home run in the top of the first.  The Kernels padded their lead with three consecutive RBI doubles with two outs in the top of the third.  Kyler Fedko, Yunior Severino, and Pat Winkel contributed with the run-scoring hits for the five-run lead.

The Kernels added to their advantage in the sixth inning.  Dylan Neuse walked, stole second, and stole third with one out.  Then, Alerick Soularie singled to left to knock in Neuse for the 6-0 lead.

Wisconsin (39-30, 3-1) was held scoreless through two innings by Kernels starting pitcher Brent Headrick on Tuesday night.  David Festa picked up right where Headrick left off last night.  Festa worked five scoreless innings and pitched around two hits, two walks, and a hit batsman.

The Timber Rattlers got to Festa in the eighth.  Tyler Black and Ethan Murray started the inning with singles.  Tristan Peters knocked in Black with a single for Wisconsin’s first run.  Festa got his seventh strikeout of the game for the second out of the inning and turned the game over to Derek Molina.

Zavier Warren fell behind Molina 0-2 but delivered a single to score Murray to get the Rattlers to within four.  That was a close as Wisconsin would get.  Molina got the final out of the eighth inning and worked around an error in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game.

Miguel Guerrero and Tyler Gillies combined to work the final six innings of the game out of the Wisconsin bullpen and only allowed one run.  Guerrero allowed a run on two hits with four strikeouts over three innings.  Gillies pitched three scoreless, hitless innings with a walk and three strikeouts.

Warren Homers & Jarvis Strikes Out Ten in Wisconsin Win

Justin Jarvis and two Wisconsin Timber Rattlers relievers held the Cedar Rapids Kernels to one hit and Zavier Warren cracked a two-run home run to send the Rattlers to a 3-1 win in the regularly scheduled game on Wednesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  The Rattlers earned a split on the day after dropping the conclusion of Tuesday’s suspended game 6-2 earlier in the day on Wednesday.

Wisconsin (40-30 overall, 4-1 second half) opened their half of the first inning with three straight singles from Tyler Black, Ethan Murray, and Joe Gray Jr.  Tristan Peters drove in Black when he grounded into a force out at second to give the Rattlers a 1-0 lead.

Seth Gray got the Kernels (45-26, 2-3) back to even in the top of the third inning with a two-out, solo home run.  That was the only hit for Cedar Rapids.

The Timber Rattlers went back in front in the bottom of the fourth.  Peters started the inning with a single.  Zavier Warren followed with a home run that went over 400 feet to right field.  Warren’s fourth home run of the season gave the Rattlers a 3-1 lead.

Jarvis wrapped his day with a perfect top of the fifth inning, including strikeouts of the final two batters he faced.  Jarvis recorded ten strikeouts and pitched around three walks and a hit batsman.  Jarvis has 88 strikeouts in 75 innings this season and is 3-1 with 42 strikeouts over 29-1/3 innings pitched in five starts in June.  Wednesday was the third time he has reached double digits in strikeouts for a game this season.

The Wisconsin bullpen took care of the rest.  Robbie Baker pitched a perfect sixth and turned the game over to Cam Robinson for the seventh.

Robinson worked a 1-2-3 seventh with two strikeouts for his eighteenth save of the season.  Robinson leads all Minor League Baseball in saves this season.  He also is in fourth place by himself on the Wisconsin single season saves list.  The only former Rattlers in front of Robinson are Nate Griep (23 saves in 2016), Greg Holle (19 saves in 2011), and John Thompson (19 saves in 1995).

Game three of the series is scheduled for Thursday night.  Israel Puello will make his Timber Rattlers debut as the starting pitcher in the game.  The Kernels will counter with Cade Povich (5-4, 3.93) as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 6:40pm.
