Derek Niedzwiecki's big night helped the West Jacksonport Ports beat the Institute Cubs 9-5 Friday night.
Niedzwiecki delivered the game's biggest blow with a two-run homer that sparked a five-run rally in the sixth inning to put the game well out of reach in favor of the Ports. He also pitched the final three innings of the game while also registered two singles, a double, and a pair of stolen bases.
Niedzwiecki scored the game's first run in the opening frame thanks to RBi single from Woody Schartner. The Port would tack on two more in the third when Paul Briney hit a two run double.
The Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the third on a run-scoring single from Kyle Ploor and a groundout from Johnny Jorns in the fifth inning. Ploor led the Cubs with four singles and an RBI. The Cubs would score three times in the bottom of the ninth as they took advantage of some fielding miscues by the Ports, but a groundout to Riley Cordier ended the rally before it got any closer.
Drew Tanck earned the win with a six inning, two run, seven strikeout outing.
