WNBA in Milwaukee? Packers HOF Butler wants it to happen

NFL and Packers Hall of Fame safety LeRoy Butler has his next business venture laid out, and it involves basketball in Milwaukee.

In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Butler made his wishes known that he would like to own a WNBA franchise. He says it will likely be a two-year process as he rounds up investors and develops a marketing plan for the potential franchise. The article cites Butler's new HOF status and the recent success of the Bucks as two reasons why now may be the time to start the effort.

Former Wisconsin Badgers player and assistant coach Anya Covington, WNBA star Eric Ogunpoel of Milwaukee; Pernell Hooker, owner of Milwaukee Aces, professional team of the Women’s Basketball Development Association; and Milwaukee Public Schools Athletic Commissioner and former Los Angeles Sparks assistant coach Bobby Kelsey were some of the other names mentioned in the story that signaled their support for bringing a WNBA franchise to Milwaukee.

Wisconsin does have one professional women's basketball team in the Wisconsin GLO, which plays in the Global Women's Basketball Association. Starring mostly state products from local universities, the GLO have won the championship in each of their first two season and play the St. Louis Surge on Saturday.
