Two Quarterbacks nominated for Senior Award

Two local quarterbacks have been named to a Preseason watch list for the Dave Krieg Award. The award is given annually to the state’s top senior quarterback as part of the WSN Senior Football Awards.

Mitchell Thompson of Kewaunee and Jack Peterson of Southern Door were the two selected from the area and are 2 out of the 60 senior quarterbacks put on the watch list. Peterson and Thompson squared off twice last year in back to back weeks, as Thompson got the best of the Eagles defense both weeks and Peterson and his offense could not put any points on the board in those 2 matchups.

Peterson was the Packerland Conference All-Conference 2nd Team Quarterback this past season, behind only Mitchell Thompson, who joins him on the list. Peterson threw for 719 Yards last season with 7 touchdowns. Peterson excelled on the ground as well, rushing for 643 yards and 7 touchdowns. He will have his top three receiving targets back this season, with Jared Hawkey, Drew Daoust, and Alec Guilette having caught every single one of his touchdowns this past season. Jack will also have versatile threat Taylor Schaefer back on offense, as Peterson and Schaefer posed a 1-2 running punch that was difficult to stop at times. The offense of the Eagles may very well look different next season with new Head Coach Mark Jonas taking over, but expect Peterson to play a large part in the success of the team.

Mitchell Thompson played a big role in leading the Storm to a conference championship clinching win over the eagles in Week 9 of last season. Thompson threw for two total touchdowns against the Eagle defense, en route to a 33-0 win. Kewaunee’s dominant run game of last season will be without Anthony Jerabek, but does return Jesse Morales-Hernandez, who toasted the Eagles for over 200 yards rushing in 2 weeks. The Storm do lose top receiving threat from last year Benjamin Heim, but saw others step up throughout the season last year down the stretch. Thompson threw for just over 1300 Yards and 13 touchdowns last season, good enough to earn him first team honors. Kewaunee will look to rely on the senior to lead them to another conference championship again this season.

The preseason list will be cut down to around 25 Semi Finalists at the halfway point of the year, and finalists will be announced after the regular season is over.
