Clay Matthews retires from NFL

Former Green Bay Packer linebacker Clay Matthews reportedly is retiring after playing in the NFL for 11 seasons.  Matthews hasn’t played in the NFL since 2019 with the Los Angeles Rams, and has expressed past interest in finishing his career in Green Bay.  The Packers showed interest in resigning Matthews in 2018 but decided to sign edge-rushers ZaDarius Smith and Preston Smith in free agency.  Matthews signed a two-year deal with the Rams and was released in 2020 after recording eight sacks in 13 games for Los Angeles.

Matthews was a six-time Pro Bowler named first-team All-Pro once during his career with the Packers.  He had 91.5 career sacks and six interceptions during his career.
