Phoenix women picked second for Horizon League

Green Bay women's basketball is gearing up for the 2022-23 season, and today, the Horizon League office announced the 2022-23 #HLWBB preseason poll. The Phoenix was selected to finish second, only behind Youngstown State.

GB received 106 points from the league's coaches as well as two first-place votes. The Penguins just edged out the Phoenix with 118 points.

Hailey Oskey, a senior guard, was tabbed to the Preseason All-League First Team. Oskey headlines a Green Bay team that finished third in the HL a year ago. Oskey was named HL All-League First Team and #HLWBB Player of the Week once last year.

Bailey Butler, the reigning Horizon League Freshman of the Year, garnered a Preseason All-League Second Team accolade. In 2021-22, Butler garnered four Horizon League Freshman of the Week awards, including three in a row from February 7 to February 21. Maddy Schreiber won FOTW twice, first on December 13, and again on December 27.

Twelve of the 15 players from the 2021-22 roster will return for the Phoenix this year. Green Bay also welcomed transfers Tatum Koenig, Natalie McNeal, and Brehna Evans to the squad in the offseason. Koenig is a grad transfer from Bradley, while McNeal and Evans add to the montage of local talent head coach Kevin Borseth has brought to GB. McNeal played high school basketball at Germantown before playing two years collegiately at St. Louis and Evans played at West De Pere before her four years at St. Cloud State.

The 2022-23 campaign begins on Wednesday, October 26, when Green Bay hosts UW-Oshkosh for the first of two exhibition games. Green Bay's preseason action will conclude Wednesday, November 2 with a home showdown against Michigan Tech.

The Phoenix begins the regular season on Monday, November 7 when they visit Drake. Some games to highlight on the schedule include the St. Pete's Showcase in late November and a showdown against Wisconsin on Dec. 14 at the Kress Events Center in Green Bay. Horizon League play begins on December 1 at Milwaukee.
