Clippers Soccer overcomes mistakes, wins Regional Championship on U102.1

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers were able to sneak by the Wrightstown Tigers 3-2 and win a regional championship thanks to some late game heroics.

The Clippers opened the game fast, as Gavin Fernandez put the ball into the back of the net 29 seconds into the game. That made it 1-0 Clippers early. But that would not be all of early scoring.

Isaac Schultz found the back of the net in the 6th minute off of a great set up from Ben Hooker, who was credited with an assist on the Schultz goal.

Things then went south for the Clippers, as they let up two own goals to bring the game back to a 2-2 tie. One own goal in the 16th minute, and a costly one in the 70th minute as the game was tied, and appeared to be heading into overtime.

With 16 seconds left in the match, Robert Alas decided to play hero and put a ball right in front of the net into the back of the net, and clinch the Regional Championship for Sturgeon Bay.

The Clippers will host the Kiel Raiders next Thursday in a WIAA sectional semifinal game at 7:00 at Clark Field.
