Door County YMCA honors DCY Swim Team Alumni Max McHugh

The Door County YMCA hosted swimmers from 8 Y’s across the state of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula this past weekend for their annual Jingle Bell meet. This meet had a special appearance by NCAA D1 Champion Max McHugh.

McHugh, a senior at the University of Minnesota, is a standout alum of the DCY Swim program and is Door County’s first Division 1 National Champion.  Among his accomplishments as a 3-time National Champion in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke, McHugh has earned eight All-American titles, five Big Ten Champion titles, and placed seventh at the 2021 Olympic Time Trials.  Last year, McHugh was also named Big 10 Swimmer of the Year.  With his final collegiate year in progress, McHugh has his sights set for big things yet to come.

Special guest State Senator Andre Jacque presented McHugh with an official Citation of the Wisconsin State Senate for his achievements in competitive swimming. McHugh was escorted to the pool deck by his mother, Mary Claire McHugh and YMCA benefactor Carla Peterson.  Peterson was also recognized during the event for her and late-husband, Ellsworth Peterson’s, generous support over the past two decades of the Door County YMCA’s Aquatic Center and swimming programs. After the ceremony, McHugh met with swimmers, took pictures with fans, and signed autographs.
