Several advance to second day of state wrestling tournament

There will be plenty of local wrestlers competing in the second day of the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament.

The Kewaunee wrestling team will have all three of its wrestlers in action on Friday morning when the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament begins its second day. With Mitchell Thompson (195) and Ezra Ducat (220) waiting for their turn, Matt Wery (145) opened his tournament run with a 6-1 decision over Joe Beavers of Hustisford.

The Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team went 3-1 on the  opening night of the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament on Thursday. Jake Jandrin (106) and Caleb Delebreau (138) picked up wins by decision while Michael Bostwick (113) concluded his night of work with a first-period pin in less than a minute. Isaac Jerabek (120) saw his individual season end with a 9-3 decision. In addition to Jandrin, Delebreau, and Bostwick, Max Ronsman, Easton Worachek, Trace Schoenbeck, and Blakelee Bastien will wrestle on Friday.

The Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestling team will stick around for Friday's action after two of its wrestlers advanced to the next round of the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament. On the boys' side, Zak Wrobel lost his first match at 170 pounds, ending his season with a fall at the hands of Tanner Kaufman from Northwestern. Ben Roman took care of business in his first match, pinning Owen Kooima in the second round. In the girls' tournament, Tiana Lemeiux was pinned in the first period by the reigning state champion from Horicon, but she will still have an opportunity to place with a match Friday morning.

The Southern Door wrestling contingent at the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament made a little history on Thursday while advancing to the second day of the tournament. Both Nora LeFevre (100) and Hailey Veeser (138) won their first matches, becoming the first in state history to win matches at the newly sanctioned WIAA Girls State Wrestling Tournament. LeFevre lost her quarterfinal match by major decision in the quarterfinal round while Veeser won hers by decision to advance to the semifinals. Both girls will wrestle again on Friday.
