State Wrestling Round-up: Kewaunee's Thompson area's lone champion

The peninsula's wrestlers will bring home plenty of hardware from the Kohl Center after an exciting weekend of action at the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament.

Kewaunee's Mitchell Thompson can lay to claim as the only state wrestling champion hailing from Door and Kewaunee counties. Thompson dominated in his three matches, ending his weekend and his career with a 15-6 major decision over Tyson Martin. He pinned his two other opponents during the tournament. Ezra Ducat finished his weekend in fourth place, going 2-2 on the weekend.

Plenty of hardware is coming home from Madison for the Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team. Easton Worachek (132), Max Ronsman (145), and Trace Schoenebeck (182) each lost their championship matches to come in second place overall in their respective weight classes. Jake Jandrin (106, 5th) and Blakelee Bastien (126, 3rd) won their final matches of the weekend while Caleb Delebreau (138, 6th) and Michael Bostwick (113, 6th) also placed. All of the wrestlers still have an extra week to their season as they prepare for the Team State Tournament in Madison next Saturday.

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestler Ben Roman made sure he did not drive home from the WIAA State Wrestling Meet empty handed on Saturday. After being pinned by Freedom's Hunter Vander Heiden in the consolation semifinal match, Roman beat Logan See (Chilton/Hilbert) 3-1 in sudden victory overtime to capture fifth place overall. According to the SBS Wrestling Facebook page, See had been a thorn in Roman's side the last two weeks before Roman got the last laugh on the state's biggest stage. Roman ends his career a two-time state medalist.

The area's first girls' state medalist hails from Southern Door after Hailey Veeser claimed fourth place at WIAA State Meet. After winning her consolation match by pin over Nevaeh Nwachukwu (Saint Croix Falls Girls), Veeser captured fourth place when she lost to Shelly Bullman (Eau Claire North Girls) by second-period pin.
