Commentary Conversations: Wrexham AFC's Mark Griffiths

A little self-confidence went a long way for Mark Griffiths as he went from a man in the stands to one of the most talked about soccer commentators in the world.

Griffiths was just a teenager when he attended a Wrexham AFC match and sat behind the team's radio broadcaster at the time. Unhappy with his performance, Griffiths showed some early guts and volunteered his services to follow the team as one of its commentators. Griffiths says he experienced some interesting circumstances early in his career as a broadcaster.

Griffiths has been the voice of Wrexham AFC for over two decades, but his work has only begun to be celebrated on an international basis. Wrexham AFC is of course the main subject of the FX docuseries "Welcome to Wrexham," the soccer team bought by Hollywood's Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The series focuses on the town of Wrexham and its connection to its team trying to get promoted to a higher league. The show's popularity has turned in more listeners for his broadcasts and the podcasts he produces for the team. He says he never imagined that his childhood team, a fifth-tier squad out of Wales, would ever garner this kind of attention.

Griffiths jokes that his connection to Wisconsin is partially through the television show Frasier since one of the characters, Roz Doyle, is from Bloomer, Wis. This interview took place as a part of the author's fundraising efforts for JDRF UK as he prepares for the London Marathon, where we will have reports during the race weekend next month.
