Wisconsin basketball takes NIT to Oregon, Marquette's season ends

Two of the state's Division 1 basketball teams saw their season get extended by at least one more game while another had theirs end on Sunday.

Marquette had their run cut short in Columbus Sunday evening, losing to Michigan State 69-62. The Spartans took a five-point lead into the locker room, but the Golden Eagles took an early lead thanks to a few three-pointers. Their hot streak from behind the arc went cold, allowing the Spartans to climb back to retake the lead for the good despite a few charges from the Golden Eagles late. Tyson Walker led all scorers with 23 points in the victory for the Spartans with former Marquette product Joey Hauser adding 14. The Golden Eagles were led by Olivier-Maxence Prosper's 16 points. Kameron Johnson and Oso Ighodaro each posted double figures in the loss.

Wisconsin took back the Kohl Center after a weekend of high school hoops and outlasted the visiting Liberty Flames 75-71. The Badgers every one of Chucky Hepburn's 27 points in the victory.  They also used their size to their advantage as Tyler Wahl posted 16 points and Steven Crowl added 14 while the Badgers also grabbed seven more rebounds than the visiting Flames. The Badgers were down by seven points at one point in the second half and down by one entering the game's final minute, but the timely free throw shooting helped them secure the win and a trip to Oregon on Tuesday. The Ducks will host the Badgers for an 8 p.m. tip Tuesday after they beat UCF in their second-round matchup.

Milwaukee beat Stetson in their CBI opener 87-83 in overtime. The Panthers outscored the Hatters 11-7 in the extra frame, led by BJ Freeman's 43 points. Three other Panthers scored in double figures. The Panthers will play against Charlotte in Daytona Beach Monday night at 6:30 p.m.
