Canoecopia is billed as the largest paddle sports expo in the country and is held each early March in Madison. I’ve enjoyed giving talks at Canoecopia each year since 2010 and this year my talk was titled, “Kayaking & Kayak Fishing Door County, Wisconsin”. I’m seeing more and more kayaks on vehicles each year in Door County and even though many know where to launch those kayaks, many don’t. In my talk I identify 22 great places to launch from Little Sturgeon Bay up the Green Bay side of the peninsula to Washington Island and down along the Lake Michigan side. If you’d like the PDF of my talk email me at kayakfishingwisconsin@gmail.com. The bonus for you smallmouth bass anglers is that I also talk about opportunities to chase smallies and the best lures to use!
With the PDF of my talk and the google pictures I’ve included you’ll be on your way to safely launching your kayak at a variety of locations to paddle the incredibly beautiful waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan! I would suggest using the PDF as a guide, but also getting on Google Maps to do a little more research and check out the locations I suggest in relation to where you will be staying or spending time doing other activities.
I feel many kayakers and kayak anglers typically look for some sort of formal boat launch or kayak launch. Don’t overlook all the roads in Door County that dead end at the water. If you can park your vehicle off the road, you can launch your kayak at these dead ends. Beaches can also be good places to launch, like Otumba Park, Sunset Park, Murphy Park, Pilgrim Park and a few others. The beaches can get busy on the weekends, so these may be a better choice during the week.
It’s the perfect time of the year to get out in your kayak and enjoy Door County! As always, if you have any kayak or kayak fishing questions email me at kayakfishingwisconsin@gmail.com.
