A street in the city of Sturgeon Bay will be discontinued, but you may have never even known that it existed. The city will be vacating Ackerman Street, which is a 60-foot wide unimproved right of way, which extends east from the southern end of Cove Road and goes for about 150 feet before it hits a did end at the city limits. The right-of-way was established in 1928 and hasn’t been improved and isn’t used other than occasional vehicles like garbage trucks, snowplows, school buses, and other vehicles, which use a short gravel driveway on it to turn around. 

The city’s plan to vacate Ackerman Street stems from a petition which was signed by Collin and Kristen Jeanquart, who own parcels on both sides of it. Once Ackerman Street is discontinued, the land will revert to the Jeanquarts because they are the abutting property owners. The Jeanquart’s plan is to demolish the existing home on Ackerman Street’s south side to build a new structure. The resolution that the city passed to vacate Ackerman Street comes with a turnaround easement, which is an agreement between the city and the property owners which will allow for a spot where larger vehicles can turn around. 

Community Development Director Marty Olejniczak explains that the city and residents don’t lose anything through the agreement. 

There was no comment from the public at the hearing regarded the discontinuation, and due to wetlands at the end of the right-of-way, Ackerman Street was unlikely able to ever extend past its dead end.
