You are paying a premium for gas at the pump, but it is not expected to slow travel down locally.
Wisconsin has been setting records every day for over a week regarding its high prices. According to AAA, the average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $4.33. Door County is above that at $4.41 a gallon, and Kewaunee County is slightly below the mark at $4.31 a gallon.
While it is unknown how the high gas prices might affect spending once they arrive, Jon Jarosh from Destination Door County says an informal poll of its lodging partners shows bookings are either on par with last year or, in some cases, slightly ahead. He added that people just want to travel.
Official numbers regarding tourism are expected to be released next month, but Door County did report record room tax revenues for 2021, totaling over $7.2 million. That is a 41 percent increase over 2019 and over three times more than what was collected in the room tax’s first year in 2007.
