If you ever wanted to serve your community in a time of need, emergency personnel throughout Door County have an opportunity for you to consider. Gibraltar Fire and Rescue, Door County Emergency Management, and MABAS 154 Incident Support Team are collaborating to form the Door County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). The program would provide emergency responders with volunteers who could help perform less irksome tasks to allow them to concentrate on more complex and critical situations. Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Chief Andy Bertges says the storms last month that knocked power out for days in some cases is the perfect example of where the CERT could have been employed because of the need to establish warming shelters, check on older residents, and other potential concerns. He adds that the only requirement is to have an enthusiasm for serving your community.
If you missed Tuesday’s Door County Volunteer Fair, Bertges says they will host a CERT Open House on June 1st from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gibraltar Fire and Rescue station on County Road F in Fish Creek.
