An 84-year-old Stuart, Florida, man may have fallen asleep at the wheel before striking two utility poles in Ephraim on Monday.
The crash occurred at 11:30 a.m. on State Highway 42 near Brodd Lane as the man was traveling north. According to the accident report, emergency personnel found the man near the southbound lane after his truck struck two utility poles.
He was alert and conscious and had minor injuries to his hands when emergency personnel arrived. The report noted it appeared he had dozed off before the crash.
He was initially unable to exit the vehicle because of downed power lines, but he was eventually removed and transported to Door County Medical Center for additional treatment. He was cited for failing to keep his vehicle under control.
Ephraim Fire Chief Justin MacDonald said the highway reopened to traffic at 4:20 p.m. after the truck was removed and at least one utility pole was replaced.
