After a busy stretch for emergency personnel on the water, the U.S. Coast Guard is reminding boaters to wear a life jacket and prepare for the unexpected.

On Monday, 20-year-olds David Thalman of Dundee, Illinois, and Franceska Warick of South Elgin, Illinois, were recovered after they went missing while kayaking without life jackets following an exhaustive search by several local, state and federal agencies.

Later Monday evening, two paddleboarders near Little Sister Bay also needed assistance from multiple agencies after they floated too far from Pebble Beach without life jackets.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, all vessels must have at least one U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable life jacket for each person on board. U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan Public Affairs Officer Joe Neff says a properly fitted life jacket should be treated like a seat belt in your car.

Neff also advises boaters to check the weather, carry a fully charged cellphone, and let friends and family know where they are going and when they expect to return.
