While the first day of school may be old hat for some students, some of the area’s youngest learners may be feeling a little more apprehensive about the experience.
Many public and some private schools will have their first day of classes Tuesday as the calendar turns to September. Separation anxiety, unfamiliar authority figures or settings, and uncertainty about having their basic needs met can all fuel that concern. The excitement and nervousness are not limited to children, either. According to Education World, nearly 25% of parents are worried about the social aspects their children will face, and nearly 12% feel uneasy about interacting with their children’s teachers.
Karen Corekin-DeLaMer from Northern Door Children’s Center in Sister Bay says it is important for parents to stay positive about school in front of their children so they can stay positive when they are in the classroom.
If you have not started already, Corekin-DeLaMer recommends parents get their children back into a school-year routine so the first week back goes as smoothly as possible.
