Your morning commute will be a little more crowded this week with school back in session. While many school districts will have their first day of classes Sept. 1, others went back Monday, if not earlier.

That means, in addition to pedestrians walking to school, school buses are back on area roads, making frequent stops to pick up students. According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, there were 655 crashes involving school buses in 2025 and 1,300 traffic convictions for failure to stop for a school bus.

If you want to save yourself from a $767.50 fine and points on your license, Door County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Kyle Veeser says to pay attention to the lights on the bus and not pass when they are flashing.

The National Safety Council also urges motorists to slow down, eliminate distractions, and yield to pedestrians when driving in school zones.
