Parts of the Kewaunee School District’s campus will be a work in progress when students arrive Tuesday. The district broke ground on a series of projects supported by a $24.5 million capital referendum approved in 2025.

The projects were needed to address issues that were not included in the district’s last capital referendum in 2016 and help the district meet the growing needs of its 3K, 4K and kindergarten programs while relocating other classes to underused space in the high school.

Superintendent Scott Fritz says the projects are about halfway complete, crediting project partner Miron Construction for working around some delayed equipment deliveries. He adds that crews should be able to continue working throughout the school year with minimal disruptions to students and staff.

Fritz says he is excited for students and community members to see the progress made on the project and imagine what it will look like when more classrooms are remodeled and the kitchen is outfitted with new equipment.

This school year will also mark the first full year of the district’s new transportation center, which hosted an open house in May.
