You are still weeks away from seeing the green leaves on Door County trees turn shades of yellow, orange and red, but meteorologists say weather from months ago may be a deciding factor.

Travel Wisconsin has activated its fall color report, giving leaf peepers regular updates on when peak color is expected in different parts of the state. Door County is expected to reach peak color during the third week of October, while Kewaunee and Brown counties are expected to peak a week later.

What those colors will actually look like is anyone’s guess, but Weathology’s Laura Lockwood says the record precipitation the area received this spring may keep the colors more muted than vibrant.

Once fall arrives, Lockwood says the area will need warm days, cool nights, and no severe weather to keep the colorful foliage around for the long haul.
