The Belgian Heritage Center will commemorate one of the most significant events in the history of Door County’s Belgian settlements during its annual Great Fire Remembrance on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The free program begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Belgian Heritage Center in Brussels and will feature presentations by Sandy Lampereur Orsted, retired Green Bay Metro Fire Department Capt. David Siegel and Barb Englebert Chisholm.

The Great Fire of 1871 devastated communities across Northeast Wisconsin, including the region’s Belgian settlements. The Belgian Heritage Center preserves and shares the history of those communities, including the fire and its impact on the settlers.

Belgian Heritage Center President Joe Alexander said Siegel’s presentation will offer a detailed look at the disaster.

“David Siegel has a really interesting story about fires and how this one took place,” Alexander said. “He goes out to Tornado Park after the event for those who want to join.”

The remembrance will be followed by an optional visit to Tornado Park.

The weekend continues Sunday, Oct. 4, with Booyah To Go from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Award-winning booyah will be available, with preorders available through the center.

Alexander said proceeds from the fundraiser support the center.

“All the proceeds go directly back to help support the Heritage Center,” he said.
