It will cost you a little more money to mail your Christmas gifts to loved ones this year. Higher rates for the U.S. Postal Service’s Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select shipments will take effect Sunday and last through Jan. 17.
According to USPS, the increased rates are needed to offset the additional expenses that come with higher holiday shipping volumes. Last year, USPS accepted nearly 9.9 billion pieces of mail and packages between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve morning, handling more than 88 million packages a day during the season’s peak.
While most of the increases range from 50 cents to $5, depending on the weight of the package and its destination, heavier parcels will see prices increase by $7.50 to $21.
