Judith M. Meier

Judith M. Meier, 94, of Sturgeon Bay, quietly passed away surrounded by her loving family on November 12, 2023, at the Door County Medical Center after a brief illness.

Judy was born in Manitowoc County to Pastor Otto and Mrs. Bertha (Leitzke) Gruendemann on April 22, 1929. She graduated from Algoma High School in 1947 and Holy Family School of Nursing in 1950. On March 6, 1952, Judy married Thomas Meier in Manitowoc. Tom preceded Judy in death on December 18, 1997.

Judy had a wonderful and full career as a registered nurse for over 40 years, most of them spent at Door County Memorial Hospital. She also worked beside her husband on the family dairy farm and was proud that it continues to this day.

Tom and Judy spent many years together touring the country in their motor home during retirement. She loved planning, preparing for, and hosting many family gatherings throughout the years. In later years, Judy enjoyed being surrounded by her family and was proud of the accomplishments of her grandchildren, all the while continuing to enjoy her knitting and crocheting.

Judy is survived by five children and 19 grandchildren, Thomas (Joyce) Meier of Wanatah, IN [and their children, Tom (Katie), Jennifer (Vince), Josh (Ainsley), Tyler, and Jocelyn], David (Heidi) Meier of Sturgeon Bay [and their children, Karl (fiancé Lucia), Anna, Daniel, and Caleb], Alberta (Tim) Baird of New Berlin [and their children, Michael (Andrea), Adam (Megan), Rachael (Matt), and Andrew (Kate)], Miriam (Craig) Olsen of Baraboo [and their children, Kevin (Jeff), Becky (Dave), and Sarah (Alex)], and John Meier (Molli Kook) of Winona, MN [and their children, Evan (Shannon), Niall (fiancé Madison), and Maxie (Charlie)]. She is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren with two more on the way.

She is further survived by her brother, Otto Gruendemann, Jr.; her sister, Lois Morgan; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Meier, Diane Meier, Grace Texley, and Katherine Chang; and many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Judy was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Daniel Gruendemann, Ruth Emden, Marcus Gruendemann, Naomi Kirchman, and Bethel Hartzheim; and brothers-in-law, Roland Meier, Michael Meier, Kenneth Chang, and Bob Morgan.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay, with Pastor Joel Sauer officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Judy will be buried next to her husband at Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Valders, WI.

Memorials may be given in her name to St. Peter’s Lutheran School.

Judy’s family would like to express their gratitude to Pastor Sauer, Pastor Schroeder, the caregivers at Cardinal Ridge and the medical team at Door County Medical Center for the care provided in the last few months of declining health.

Huehns Funeral Home, Inc. in Sturgeon Bay is assisting the Meier family. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Judy may be shared with her family through her tribute page at www.huehnsfuneralhome.com.
