Mary S. Schranz

     Mary Sue Schranz, 65, of the Town of Sturgeon Bay, was born to eternal life on Friday, March 29, 2024 after a four year battle with endometrial cancer.

     She was born on September 28, 1958 in Crystal Lake, IL to Frederick and Joyce (Hendricks) Schranz. The family moved to Waukesha, WI in 1960. Mary graduated from Waukesha North High School in 1976 and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1980 with a B.A. degree in Finance and Administrative Management. After working for General Electric Credit Corporation and Marine Bank, N.A., Mary pursued studies at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, graduating with a Ph.D. in Economics in 1988.

     Mary spent 25 years teaching economics and finance at several universities and colleges including Hunter College (CUNY) in New York, New York, Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Madison Area Technical College, both in Madison, WI. Mary also taught a short course in finance at Vidzemes University College in Valmiera, Latvia in 2002. She published her research in the professional journals Journal of Political Economy and Financial Management and reviewed several textbooks.

     Mary traveled extensively beginning with family camping trips throughout the United States and Canada, and eventually visited 17 countries. She especially enjoyed meeting relatives in Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. Mary maintained an avid interest in genealogy and family history throughout her life. She briefly served as a substitute organist at Tanum Forest Lutheran Church in the Town of Clay Banks, Sturgeon Bay, WI. Mary also served for several years on the boards of the Shiloh Church Lot and Cemetery Association in Sturgeon Bay and the Welsh Club of the Milwaukee Area.

     Surviving family include her mother, Joyce E. Schranz and sister, Ann M. Schranz, both of Sturgeon Bay. She will also be missed by many cousins and friends.

     Preceding her in death were her father, Frederick P. Schranz; paternal grandparents, Frederick and Ida Schranz; and her maternal grandparents, Henry and Lulu Hendricks.

     A funeral service honoring the life of Mary will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2024 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay with Rev. Peter Mannoja officiating. Burial will be made in Ottawa Cemetery near Dousman, WI on the family lot.  

     Friends may call at Huehns Funeral Home on Saturday, April 6, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. 

     In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the charity of your choice.

     The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Unity Hospice for the care extended to Mary, especially in her final days.
