Eugene Graycarek
Eugene Graycarek, 96, of Sturgeon Bay, died peacefully in his sleep on April 26, 2025, at Pine Crest Assisted Living in Sturgeon Bay, WI. He is fondly remembered as “Kapusta” to many. Eugene was born December 6, 1928, in Manitowoc, WI to Steven and Anna (Miller) Graycarek. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Manitowoc in 1947. Eugene started in the field of carpentry right after high school. He continued to advance in the field to become a construction supervisor for JP Cullen, Hamann, Immel and others. He was a member of the Carpenters Local Union #1146 for 77 years. Eugene married Joane Rugowski of Manitowoc, WI on April 15, 1949. They took up residence in Whitelaw, WI and lived there until 1972. They then moved to the home that Eugene designed and built by the water on Sand Bay Point, Sturgeon Bay, WI. He loved to go boating, fishing, ice fishing, but most of all, to sit by the beach and enjoy the view. Other past times included deer hunting and tending to his vegetable garden. He was known as the “Tomato King”. He loved to go snowmobiling and he belonged to the Door Drifters Snowmobile Club. His favorite pastime as he got older was to sit by his picnic table and feed the chipmunks and squirrels that became his pets. Survivors include his wife Joane, a son Chris (Jeannie) Graycarek and daughter Gail (John) Taddy, grandchildren, Steve Graycarek, Cheryl (Dan) Shefchek, David and Daniel Taddy, and Tristan (Lori) Wier; great-grandchildren, Sophia and Gabriella Shefchek, and Aubrey Rabuck. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Lauri (Jim) Wier, and grandson Tyler Wier. A private family memorial service was held on May 3. The family would like to thank the staff at Pine Crest Village Assisted Living for the amazing care and compassion they gave Eugene during his time there. Forbes Funeral Home served the family.
