William “Bill” David Calkins, 79, passed away from complications from Alzheimer’s. He passed peacefully with family and loved ones nearby. Bill is preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla “Poo” Calkins, (nee Gilbert) and his parents, Betty and Bob Calkins. He is survived by his devoted sister, Julia Calkins Peterson (Jim) of Asheville, North Carolina, and his faithful companion, Rudy, a Maltipoo. Bill was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois. After graduating from the University of Missouri, Bill served in the Army for several years. After his service, he attended the University of Missouri Law School, where he was editor of the Law Review and elected to the Order of the Coif. Bill practiced law in Kansas City, Missouri before relocating to Wisconsin, where he was an executive at Miller Electric Company in Appleton for many years. Bill lived in Door County for 40 years and was a generous supporter of the community. He was a founding board member of the Door County Auditorium and a member of the Peninsula Players board. An avid golfer, Bill was a member of the Horseshoe Bay Country Club and a regular player at the Peninsula State Park course. Bill’s annual golf outing, The Porterhouse Open, was a popular event with his golf buddies. Bill was a founding member of the Reserve Club in Indian Wells, California, where he owned a winter residence for many years. During that period, he served on the board of the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage. One of Bill’s passions was boating, initially in the Caribbean, and for many years in the waters surrounding the Door Peninsula. When he wasn’t on the water, Bill could often be found on his boat, Wanbli, relaxing and bantering with fellow boaters at the Yachtworks marina in Sister Bay. The family would like to thank the special people who helped care for Bill: Dr. Joseph Rebhan, Mona Rabas, RN, caregivers Colleen Paris and Tracy Matheny, Unity Hospice, Maureen Mercier and Stephany Cosgrove. Also, very supportive of Bill’s journey were his close friends: Patti Seger, Mike Bacsi, Steve Fischer, Patsy Lee, James “JJ” and Kris Johnson, John and Jackie Sawyer, and Dick and Sue Staver. Bill was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Sister Bay, WI. Details regarding a celebration of life and the scattering of Bill’s ashes in Lake Michigan will be announced by the family at a later date.
