Droughts dry up Phoenix men's chances against Oakland

A ten-plus minute drought in the second half ended a chance for the Green Bay Phoenix to win their second game in a row, falling to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 59-47.

The second-half drought was their second one of the game after the game flipped on its head in the opening frame when a 10-9 deficit early in opening frame turned into a 25-12 advantage for the Golden Grizzlies. The Phoenix used a strong day at the line and some long shots from Davin Zeigler to get the game into single digits. It was 37-34 when the Phoenix went cold with just over 14 minutes remaining, not scoring again until after the four-minute media timeout. The Golden Grizzlies went on a 19-0 run to stop any rally from occurring.

Cade Meyer scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds en route to his second career double-double while Clarence Cummings III matched Meyer in points and Ziegler led the team with 14 points. Trey Townsend led the way with 23 points for the Golden Grizzlies.

The men will return to action on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Phoenix women will fill the gap between them as they host Northern Kentucky on Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at noon against Wright State. A five-game winning streak and their first 20-win season since before the pandemic are on the line as they are currently tied with Cleveland State for the Horizon League lead.
