Local eight-man football begins swan song Thursday

The season for the area's eight-man football team could potentially be over by Saturday morning.

Sevastopol is the only team with an outside chance at making the playoffs if they beat Gillett on Thursday night. That would give them five wins, joining close to 30 other teams with at least that many. However, there are only 16 slots available in the WIAA Eight-Man Football Playoffs. The Pioneers play the Tigers in Institute at 7 p.m.

Enrollment is the only thing keeping Algoma out of the playoff field. They are a 6-1 on the season, with a non-conference loss to NEW Lutheran/Oneida Nation, their season's lone blemish. They would blow out the United in a subsequent meeting. The Wolves will face their toughest task of the season on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they welcome undefeated Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas for a chance at the Across the Bay Conference crown.

Gibraltar is 0-6 on the season and will not make the playoffs. They are scheduled to play Wabeno/Laona on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will air on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff from Wabeno High School at 7 p.m.
