After a forgettable Saturday afternoon for both squads, a step down in divisions may be a welcome respite for the Green Bay Phoenix basketball teams.
In Green Bay, the Phoenix women challenged but could not overtake the bigger Creighton Saturday afternoon, losing the game 74-52. It was 11-0 before the Phoenix even got onto the scoreboard. The women would get the game to within single digits, only to see the Blue Jays stretch their lead again. Natalie McNeal was the lone Phoenix in double figures with 19 points. Jenna Guyer and Maddy Schrieber each had seven points, while Callie Genke chipped in six. They will play Ripon College on Thursday at 6 p.m.
In Santa Barbara, the Phoenix men's four-point lead at halftime quickly turned into another 20-point-plus loss, this time an 83-66 point loss to UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos made their run when Anthony Roy went out, outscoring the Phoenix 40-24 from that point on. Jeremiah Johnson did his part to keep the Phoenix in the game, leading the team with 18 points. Preston Ruedinger chipped in another 13 points. The Phoenix are home against Michigan Tech on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
