Several local wrestlers are still alive in their brackets after the first day of the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament in Madison.
Kewaunee's Mitchell Boeder is well on his way to medaling at the WIAA Individual State Tournament after posting a pair of wins on Thursday. Boeder pinned Vadim Misiura (Cedar Grove-Belgium) in the first period and Jovan Lopez (Ozaukee) in the second period to earn to advance to Friday's semifinals. Arianna Niemojuski was not as lucky as she lost in her first match by injury default to Bella Roman (Ashland-Girls).
Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Spencer Madsen continued his march to a podium finish in Madison with a win in the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament on Thursday. Madsen registered a major decision against Isaiah Nowak (Coleman) in his lone match. Madsen has not dropped a match in the postseason, registering bonus points in every one. Tiani LeMieux ran into a tough customer during her tournament opener when Katelyn Nosbisch pinned her in the first period (Black River Falls-Girls).
Five of Luxemburg-Casco's seven qualifiers posted wins on the first day of the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament on Thursday. On the girls side, Kiley Georgel did not need much help as she won her first two matches over Rayanah Yates (West De Pere-Girls) and Merin Yates (Merrill-Girls) to advance to the semifinals. Joining her from the boys side is Carson Neubert and Blakelee Bastien. Like Georgel, Neubert registered a pin and a tech fall en route to the semifinals, while Bastien posted a tech fall and a regular decision. Joseph Jeanquart and Logan Ellwanger both won their first match before falling in the quarterfinals. Mason Boulanger and Calvin Bohn each lost their first match in the tournament.
