Southern Door High School has a rich and storied history of young men that used the Eagles Football program as a spring board to college and professional football. The latest to receive a college scholarship is Cal McCarty. The senior told DoorCountyDailyNews.com through a live interview on 104.1 FM WRLU that Michigan Tech has extended a Division 2 football scholarship and he has accepted the offer.
McCarty had the opportunity to play under his uncle Dan McCarty and grew as a player and a person. In his senior season, Cal was asked to switch from tight end to tackle. McCarty made the switch and did not look back. He helped the team to a better record than the previous season and again excelled as a punter.
McCarty said, “I will attend Michigan Tech next year for Mechanical Engineering and to play football on scholarship. I love everything about this school and cannot wait to make myself the best athlete possible and help my new team and begin a new journey.”
When asked about what position the Huskies plan on using McCarty for he said, “They plan on using me for offensive line, tight end and/or punter depending on how much weight I can put on my body.”
The 6’5” Southern Door senior was all-state as a punter last year and first team all-conference this season as a punter.
McCarty will receive a half scholarship his freshman year and could earn a full-ride by his sophomore season if he can become a major contributor on the Michigan Tech Football Team.
