Baseball and softball teams look to dodge rain drops

With rain expected to hit this afternoon and last through the evening, the area's baseball and softball teams must dodge raindrops to fit their games in on Thursday.

If Mother Nature allows, the baseball slate includes Luxemburg-Casco hosting Denmark (4:30 p.m.) and Sturgeon Bay playing at home against Green Bay East (5 p.m.). Thursday's softball slate includes Algoma to heading to NEW Lutheran for a doubleheader (4 p.m.), Kewaunee visiting Sevastopol for a doubleheader (4:30 p.m.) and Luxemburg-Casco traveling to Wrightstown (4:30 p.m.).

The area's golf teams will try to fit in rounds of golf before the afternoon rains hit the area.

The Packerland Conference golf season continues its season north on Thursday when Gibraltar welcomes teams to Peninsula Golf Course. Sevastopol, Kewaunee, NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy, Oconto, Peshtigo, Southern Door, and Sturgeon Bay are also participating. Tee time is set for 4 p.m.

Luxemburg-Casco might have a better chance at getting their round in when they tee off at 10 a.m. at River Island Golf Course in Oconto Falls. Clintonville, Denmark, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Little Chute, Marinette, Oconto Falls, Waupaca, and Wrightstown are also scheduled to participate.

Kewaunee will visit conference foe Peshtigo for its track invitational that also features Crivitz, Gillett, Laona-Wabeno, Lena, Marinette, Menominee Indian, Oconto, and Oconto Falls. The first events are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Gibraltar heads to Chilton for an invitational that has Pulaski, Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran, Omro, Roncalli, St. Lawrence Seminary, Shawano Community, and Wrightstown also competing. The first events are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Glory to add Wednesday games

The announcement is short on details, but a recent Green Bay Glory schedule change is expected to add some extra excitement.

The Glory announced on Wednesday that it is adding weekly Wednesday night games at UW-Green Bay as a part of its partnership with a local business. The first friendly was set for last night (05/01/24), but no details were shared. The team will announce individual game details in the coming days and weeks.

Rattlers Rally Falls Just Short in 9-8 Loss to Great Lakes

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers found themselves down 8-0 to the red-hot Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  The Rattlers battled back to within a run twice, but ultimately fell 9-8 to Great Lakes.  Noah Miller led Great Lakes with two homers and three RBI in support of five scoreless innings from Jared Karros, who had to watch as his bullpen almost gave the game to Wisconsin.

The Loons (16-7) started fast.  Wisconsin starter Patricio Aquino walked lead-off hitter Alex Freeland to begin the game.  Miller followed with a two-run home run to right on a 1-2 pitch and Great Lakes was up two batters into the game on Miller’s second homer of the series.

Aquino hit Jake Vogel with one out in the top of the second and Freeland made him pay for it by lining an RBI double to right-center to give the Loons a 3-0.  Chris Newell made it 4-0 in favor of the visitors in the top of the third with a lead-off home run to center.  An error on a pickoff throw to third with two outs in the fourth allowed Vogel to score from third.

Great Lakes had runners on second and third with one out in the top of the fifth against reliever Tyler Wehrle.  He got Nelson Quiroz to send a weak grounder up the first base line.  Wehrle tried to get the out at the plate and threw wildly.  Two runs scored and the Rattlers were down 7-0.

Karros, the Great Lakes starting pitcher, didn’t let a Wisconsin batter past second base in his five shutout innings.  The right-hander allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out two in his five scoreless innings.

Miller hit a lead-off homer in the top of the sixth inning and Wisconsin was staring at an 8-0 hole.  Miller is 6-for-10 with three homers and six RBI in the first two games of the series at Wisconsin.

The Timber Rattlers (15-8) began climbing out of that hole with two runs on one hit in the bottom of the sixth inning against reliever Madison Jeffrey.

Gregory Barrios was hit by a pitch, stole second, and went to third on a wild pitch.  Luke Adams got Barrios across the plate with a single but was erased on a double play.  The Rattlers restarted the rally with two more walks and two more wild pitches.  The second wild pitch allowed Jadher Areinamo to score the second run.

In the bottom of the seventh, Vargas was at first with two outs.  The next seven Rattlers reached base against reliever Jerming Rosario as they cut the deficit to a single run.  Barrios singled and Adams was hit by a pitch.  Matt Wood lined a single to left to score two runs.  Areinamo followed with an RBI single.  Ram?n Rodríguez worked the count full and sent a high popup on the infield.  The wind blew the ball out of the reach of the fielders as it landed on the mound for an RBI single to chase Rosario.

Terence Doston greeted reliever Kelvin Bautista with a single to center to get the Rattlers to within 8-7. Vargas, in his second plate appearance of the inning walked to load the bases before Bautista got the final out.

Great Lakes took advantage of a lead-off walk in the top of the eighth inning.  A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second.  Dylan Campbell blooped a singled to left to score the insurance run for a 9-7 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Areinamo had a lead-off single, his third hit of the game, to bring the tying run to the plate against Lucas Wepf.  However, Wepf got a 6-4-3 double play to put the Loons one out away from their eighth straight win.

Doston delayed the celebration with a home run to right to bring the Rattlers back to within a run.  Vargas was hit by a pitch to keep the game alive with the winning run at the plate before Wepf ended the game with a force out at second.

Doston was 2-for-5 with two RBI on Wednesday to move his current hitting streak to five games (9-for-20).  Barrios in on a six-game hitting streak (9-for-23) and Areinamo is on a four game hitting streak (7-for-17).

Great Lakes has hit five homers in the series to give them 22 so far this season.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  Will Rudy (0-1, 5.93) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Paul Heubeck (1-1, 2.51) is slated to start for Great Lakes.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Softball Recap: Storm-Eagles split, Sevastopol and Algoma sweep, Clippers split with Gibraltar/Washington Island

On Tuesday evening, the high school girl's softball action saw dominating performances and a couple of split doubleheaders.

Kewaunee and Southern Door split the doubleheader, with the Storm taking game one 5-3 and the Eagles nipping the Storm 3-2 in the nightcap.

Algoma dominated Oconto in a doubleheader with wins of 10-3 and 19-6 at home

Sturgeon Bay split a doubleheader with Gibraltar/Washington Island at home.  The Clippers dropped the opener 14-8 and rebounded with a 15-9 loss in game two.

In Institute, the Sevastopol Pioneers swept a twin bill over NEW Lutheran/Providence 10-0, 20-1.

In NEC softball, Luxemburg-Casco crushed the Waupaca Comets at home 10-1.

Bucks dominate Pacers to starve off elimination

The Milwaukee Bucks stayed alive in the 2024 NBA playoffs Tuesday with a 115-92 win over the Indiana Pacers at Fiserv Forum.

Trailing the series 3-1 and playing for their playoff lives, The Bucks held the Pacers to just 17 and 19 points in the second and third quarter, respectively, in building a 20 point lead going into the fourth quarter.

Bobby Portis and Kris Middleton led the Bucks with 29 points each, as Milwaukee played again without top scores Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damien Lillard, who remain sidelined with injuries.

The series now returns to Indianapolis for Game 6 on Thursday with the Pacers still leading the series three games to two.

Great Lakes beats Timber Rattlers 6-4 in opener

One team’s winning streak had to end on Tuesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in the game between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (winners of five straight games) and Great Lakes Loons (winners of six straight).  The Timber Rattlers jumped out to an early lead only to see the Loons rally for the lead.  The Great Lakes bullpen took over from there to beat Wisconsin 6-4 in game one of the six-game series.

The Timber Rattlers (15-7) got off to another fast start by scoring three runs.  Dylan O’Rae started the inning with a single to left and two wild pitches got him to third base.  Luis Lara walked and stole second to put runners at second and third for Greogry Barrios, who singled to right to score both runners.  Later in the inning, Barrios beat the throw home on a grounder to short off the bat of Jadher Areinamo for a 3-0 lead.

Wisconsin has outscored their opponents 27-10 in the first inning this season.

Noah Miller hit a two-out, solo homer in the top of the second inning to put Great Lakes (15-7) on the scoreboard.

O’Rae answered for the Rattlers with an RBI single in the bottom of the second to put the Rattlers up 4-1.

Miller struck again in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out, RBI single against Wisconsin starter Tate Kuehner.  Miller would move to second on a wild pitch.  Kuehner got ahead of Sam Mongelli 1-2, but the next pitch was lined off the wall in left for an RBI single.  Mongelli was thrown out at second trying to go for a double, but the Rattlers lead was down to one run.

The lead was gone two batters into the fifth inning.  Reliever Jake Polancic hit the first batter he faced.  Then, Jake Vogel hit a home run to left and the Loons had a 5-4 lead.

The Rattlers offense was quiet after the second inning as they were held to two hits.  Barrios had a lead-off double in the fifth inning against Chris Campos, who would retire the next nine Rattlers he faced.  Areinamo singled with two outs in the eighth inning against Kelvin Ramirez, but he was left stranded.  Ramirez closed out the game with a perfect ninth to end Wisconsin’s five-game winning streak.

O’Rae was 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI for Wisconsin.  However, the Rattlers were 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

The Timber Rattlers finished April with a 15-7 record, tied for the third-most wins in April in team history.  The 2005 Timber Rattlers also went 15-7 in April.  Only the Wisconsin teams in 1997 (17-8) and 1996 (16-7) won more games in April than this year’s team.

The Loons have won seven in a row, all of them on the road.

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon. Patricio Aquino (1-1, 6.23) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Jared Karros (3-0, 2.70) is set to start for the Loons.  Game time is 12:10pm.

Kewaunee's Bortolini ready for next step in NFL

It might be safe to say that Kewaunee's second favorite NFL team is the Indianapolis Colts after they made former Storm standout Tanor Bortolini the 117th pick of the NFL Draft this weekend.

Bortolini tested off the charts at the NFL Combine earlier this year after a career at Wisconsin where he also showed his versatility to play multiple positions along the offensive line. A video played on the Colts' social media feeds featured Bortolini lost for words knowing that has NFL dreams had been realized.

During his media availability, Bortolini talked about his excitement to learn from the Colts' veterans, specifically name-dropping Ryan Kelly and Quenton Nelson. "You want to have careers like those two," Bortolini said, according to an article on Colts.com. "They've done it for a long time at an extremely high level and they're some of the best to do it at their respective positions. So, to be able to work with guys like that, you can learn a lot from those two, like what they do to put themselves in positions to be as good and as successful as they are. I'm really excited to get to know and work with them."

Bortolini earned All-State honors as a left tackle during his senior year and also garnered the Packerland Conference Defensive Player of the Year award after earning lineman of the year honors during his junior campaign at Kewaunee.

Zephyrs run all over United soccer

The Sevastopol/Gibraltar United soccer team could not withstand St. Mary Catholic's offensive pressure on Saturday, losing 7-0.

The Zephyrs jumped out to a 5-0 first-half lead and only extended it further in the second half. Four Zephyrs players scored goals, including Audrey Wanless's hat-trick and Bitzy McCauley's brace.

Despite the high goal total, it could have been worse without the United's good goalkeeping, which stopped 19 of the 26 shots made by the Zephyrs.

Timber Rattlers Hold On To Win Fourth Straight Game

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers rallied to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning and nursed that one-run advantage all the way to the final out to defeat the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park on Saturday night.  Eduarqui Fernández went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored and Terence Doston delivered another key hit for the Rattlers.

The Chiefs (7-13) had two outs with none on base in the bottom of the second when Anyelo Encarnacion drew a walk against Rattlers starting pitcher Alexnder Cornielle.  William Sullivan looked like he had grounded in the to the final out of the inning, but a bad hop turned his grounder into a single to extend the inning.  Cornielle looked like he got out of the inning again, but a grounder off the bat of Brody Moore eluded two Wisconsin infielders and trickled into left for an RBI single.

Peoria starter Pete Hansen fell into the same pattern in the top of the third inning.  Hansen retired the first two batters of the frame.  Jadher Areinamo lined a single to right.  Gregory Barrios and Luke Adams kept the inning going by drawing walks to load the bases.  Fernández doubled to right-center to score all three runners for a 3-1 lead.

Zach Levenson had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to tighten up the score.

The game became interesting and emotional with two outs in the top of the fifth inning.  Barrios was at first and was going on Hansen’s first movement.  Unfortunately, as Barrios took off for second as Hansen threw to first.  William Sullivan, the first baseman, took the throw and fired to second base for what the Chiefs thought would be the final out of the inning.  Barrios was ruled safe.  Chiefs second baseman Dakota Harris disagreed and was ejected.

Wisconsin (14-6) could not take advantage of the break and the game went to the bottom of the fifth with the Rattlers still up 3-2.

Darlin Moquette started the Chiefs fifth with a double, but he was picked off second base by Cornielle.  The Rattlers right-hander got a strikeout for the second out but gave up a single to Levenson to end his night.  The call went to Craig Yoho to get the final out of the fifth and protect the lead.

Yoho, who had walked one and struck out fifteen in his first seven outings of the season, walked Leonardo Bernal on a 3-2 pitch to keep the inning alive.  Osvaldo Tovalin, the player who replaced Harris after the ejection, lined the first pitch he saw to center to score the tying run and send Bernal to third with the go-ahead run.

Tovalin figured into the go-ahead run to as he broke for second with Anyelo Encarnacion at the plate.  Catcher Ram?n Rodríguez lost the ball out of his mitt as he went to throw to second.  Bernal broke for home when he saw the ball in the grass, and he ran straight through the plate and into the Peoria dugout on the first base side of the field after avoiding Yoho’s tag to score the go-ahead run.

The Rattlers fought back in the top of the sixth inning to retake the lead, but it was touch-and-go for a bit.  Fernández singled for his third hit of the game to start the inning.  Jesús Chirinos doubled down the line in with one out to put runners at second and third.  Peoria went to their bullpen and replaced Hansen with Joseph King.

Jheremy Vargas fell behind 1-2 before sending a grounder under the glove of King to second.  It was enough.  The only play was to first base as Fernández scored the tying run.  Doston followed with a sharp single to center to send Chirinos home for a 5-4 lead.

Brian Fitzpatrick took over on the hill for the Rattlers and sent down the Chiefs in order in the sixth and seventh innings.  Peoria threatened with a pair of infield singles sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt in the eighth.  Fitzpatrick escaped with a strikeout and a foul pop.

In the ninth, Fitzpatrick got the first two outs before Won-Bin Cho reached on another infield single.  That was all for Fitzpatrick, who struck out four without a walk in 3-2/3 innings.

Will Childers came on to close the game and picked up his first professional save on his second pitch.  Cho, who was 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts this season, broke for second on a 1-0 pitch to Levenson.  Rodríguez threw a strike to Areinamo covering at second and Cho was out by a wide margin to end the game.

The Timber Rattlers have won four games in a row.  Saturday’s win also clinched Wisconsin’s fourth straight series to open the season.

The series finale at Dozer Park is Sunday afternoon.  Edwin Jimenez (3-0, 4.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  The Chiefs have named Inohan Paniagua (1-1, 4.05) as their starter.  Game time is 2:05pm CDT.

Sturgeon Bay, Sevastopol hold own at St. Norbert Elite Track Meet

The Sturgeon Bay and Sevastopol track teams faced some of the top teams in the region Friday at the St. Norbert College Elite Meet.

For Sturgeon Bay, the boys and girls squads combined to post top-eight finishes eight times during the meet. The best performances were saved for the girls as Nida Zukauskaite (high jump) posted a personal record, and Julia Kurek (3200m) ran strong to come in second place in their respective events.

For Sevastopol, the Pioneers had three athletes finish in the top eight. For the boys, Jarius Dadam seventh in the triple jump. On the girls' side, Bea Dramm (8th, 3200m) and Caitlyn Fellner's personal record in the 400m led the way.
