Bandits Break Wisconsin Win Streak

The Quad Cities River Bandits scored ten runs in the first five innings to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 10-5.  Cayden Wallace led the Bandits with a double, triple, homer, two runs scored, and four RBI.

The River Bandits (1-5 second half, 33-39 overall) ambushed Wisconsin starting pitcher Tyler Woessner in the first inning.  A four-pitch walk started the frame.  Herard Gonzalez tripled on a 1-0 pitch to score the first run of the game.  Gavin Cross smacked a single through the drawn-in infield to score Gonzalez on a 2-0 pitch.  Then, Wallace punished a 3-2 pitch from Woessner for a long home run to left for a 4-0 lead.

Woessner bounced back to retire nine of the next ten batters he faced.

The Rattlers (4-2, 30-40) got on the scoreboard in the top of the second when Ernesto Martínez Jr left the yard to right with a solo homer.

Wisconsin continued to chip away with a run in the top of the third.  Ben Metzinger doubled to start the inning.  A wild pitch moved Metzinger to third.  Terence Doston knocked in Metzinger with a chopper up the first base line and the Rattlers were within two runs.

Quad Cities got those runs back in the bottom of the fourth.  Juan Carlos Negret singled.  Shervyen Newton followed one out later with a two-run home run to right and the Rattlers were down 6-2.

Robert Moore kept the Timber Rattlers on the comeback trail with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the fifth.  The hit got the Rattlers back to within two runs and extended Moore’s current on-base streak to eighteen games.

However, the River Bandits kept the pace as they scored four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to knock Woessner out of the game.  Gonzalez singled and Cross reached on a fielder’s choice.  Wallace ripped a triple to left-center to score two runs.  Then, Carter Jensen homered to right and the Bandits were up 10-4.

Woessner entered Friday’s game with just one home run allowed in 66-2/3 innings pitched.  He had made four previous starts in June and had only allowed seven runs in 22-1/3 innings pitched.

Emotions ran very high in the top of the seventh inning.  Wisconsin had runners at second and third with two outs when Matt Wood sent a blooper down the line in left that appeared to be fair for a two-run double.  The ball was called foul by plate umpire Cliburn Rondon.  Wisconsin manager Joe Ayrault, who was coaching third base and waving the runners home, immediately started to argue after he realized the call.  Ayrault was ejected from the game.

A passed ball would let a run score in the inning, but that would be the final run of the game.

Ryan Brady did yeoman’s work out of the Wisconsin bullpen to hold the Bandits off the scoreboard after he got into the game.  Brady pitched four scoreless innings, allowed two hits, walked none, and struck out four.

The loss ended Wisconsin’s four-game winning streak.  Quad Cities snapped a six-game losing streak with their victory.

Game four of the series is set for Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park.  Edwin Jimenez (2-1, 3.74) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  David Sandlin (0-1, 4.50) is set to start for the River Bandits.  Game time is 6:30pm CDT.

Egg Harbor pulls away late against Baileys Harbor on 105.1 the GOAT

The Egg Harbor Indians put up crooked numbers in three of the final four innings to beat the Baileys Harbor A's 11-4 on the road Friday night.

The two teams went back and forth the first half of the game as the A's struck first on an RBI double by Gavin Blink in the second inning and the Indians scored twice without Joe Sawyer having to leave the batters' box in the third inning to give them a 2-1 lead.

After a bases-loaded walk gave the Indians a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth, the A's retook the lead in the bottom half thanks to a RBI single by Matt Francesconi and a two-run single by Aaron Brey made it 4-3. The Indians retook the lead and never gave it up again after Jace Johnson walked in the game-tying and what proved to be the game-winner in the sixth inning.

The Indians nearly batted around again in the seventh inning as they took advantage of A's mistakes to plate another three runs. Meanwhile, the pitching combination of Alex Byrne and Riley Spetz kept the A's at bay for the rest of the game after Joe Sawyer's exit in the fifth inning, allowing no hits and just one baserunner across the final three-plus innings. Nick Kita showed why he is one of the league's best hitters when he capped off the scoring with a two-run homer a few batters after his brother Brady scored on a wild pitch.

The Indians earned an important to stay in the thick of the playoff race with the victory while the A's continue to weather injuries while staying just above Institute in the standings.

NEW Radio Sports Network and 105.1 the GOAT hit the road again on Sunday when West Jacksonport visits Sister Bay. Other Door County Baseball League game scheduled for the holiday weekend include Kolberg hosting Maplewood and Institute traveling to Washington Island.

Egg Harbor visits Baileys Harbor under the lights on 105.1 The GOAT

Baileys Harbor will have to figure out how to slow down a high-powered Egg Harbor offense as the two teams open the holiday weekend along the lakeshore in Door County Baseball League action Friday night.

The Indians have found no power shortage this season,  scoring at least 19 runs three times this season, including last week's 20-10 victory over Institute. As of June 16th, the Indians had four players among the top hitters in the DCBL, led by Nick Kita's .500 average. Kita's 11 hits were tops among all hitters while Joe Sawyer was among the pitching leaders with 10 strikeouts across 27.1 innings pitched.

The A's have not been able to recapture the magic their first win in three years brought Memorial Day weekend, dropping all of their games since. They were dealt a significant blow with the DCBL's leading batter, Isaac Berkley, had his season end when he broke his arm. The A's tried dodging raindrops but could not dodge the Islanders as they lost their match up to Washington Island 12-1. This marks the first night game of the season for the A's.

Tim Kowols and Reece Robillard will have the call from Baileys Harbor Friday night beginning at 7:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 7:30 p.m.

Six Gamblers drafted by NHL teams

After a quiet first day of the NHL Draft, there were plenty of Green Bay Gamblers players going off the board at the NHL Draft in Nashville on Thursday.

Six Gamblers were drafted by NHL teams across the event's final six rounds, with goaltender Adam Gajan the first player off the board in the second round to the Chicago Blackhawks. Many of the players are likely a couple of years away from joining the parent club as they are committed to a college or will spend time at other levels of hockey before making their way to NHL. You can see the draft picks below:

Rockers erupt in extras to top 'Chucks

The Green Bay Rockers pushed the game into the 11th and scored more runs than they did the previous 10 innings in a 13-7 win over the host Wausau Woodchucks.

The two teams traded three-run innings early with the Rockers completing the feat in the first inning and the Woodchucks matching it in the second. A Carlos Hernandez sacrifice fly gave the Rockers a lead in the fourth inning, but they found themselves chasing after that when the Woodchucks scored twice in the fifth. The Rockers tied the game in the seventh and the eighth with single tallies, but they would bat around and then some in the 11th inning. Kendal Ewell cleared the bases with a triple and would score three more times later in the inning without the ball ever leaving the infield.

Hernandez led the way with three RBI on a 1-4 night while two others drove in two runs. The Rockers' pitching staff struck out 14 Woodchucks, including winning pitcher Tyler Horvath, who went the final 4.1 innings to strike out six.

The Rockers head home for a pair against the Lakeshore Chinooks beginning at 6:35 p.m.

Glory shut out by Aurora

The Green Bay Glory could not handle the opposition's firepower for a third straight match as they lost at home Thursday night 4-0 to Minnesota Aurora.

The undefeated Aurora scored twice in 10 minutes towards the midpoint of the first half with Maya Hansen scoring in the 20th minute and Cat Rapp adding a tally in the 27th minute. Sophie French registered Aurora's third goal in the 64th minute and the team capped off their scoring in the 88th minute with a strike by Brenlin Mullaney.

The Glory will try for a happy ending to their season when they host Bavarian United at Capital Credit Union Park Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m.

Cruz, Brown Lead Rattlers to Fourth Straight Win

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers receive a strong start from Stiven Cruz and a timely home run from Eric Brown Jr to hold on for a 3-2 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits Thursday night at Modern Woodmen Park.  The win was the fourth in a row for the Timber Rattlers.

Wisconsin (4-1 second half, 30-39 overall) got on the scoreboard first when they plated a run in the third inning.  Je’Von Ward doubled to start the inning.  Ernesto Martínez Jr followed with a single to score Ward for the 1-0 lead.

Cruz kept the River Bandits (0-5, 32-39) in check for five innings.  The right-hander gave up a lead-off single in the first inning and retired the next fourteen batters in a row.  A walk and a single with two outs in the fifth inning threatened to spoil the night for Cruz, but he bounced back with a strikeout to end the frame.  Cruz allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out eight to turn a 1-0 lead over to the bullpen.

Alexander Cornielle was the first reliever and was into a game for the first time since June 4.  He pitched around a lead-off single in the sixth and a two-out walk in the seventh to protect the 1-0 lead.

Brown gave the Rattlers a little breathing room with a two-run home run off Cruz Noriega in the top of the eighth inning for a 3-0 advantage.

Cornielle went back out for the bottom of the eighth and got the first out but walked Shervyen Newton to end his night and bring Brannon Jordan in as the second Wisconsin reliever.

Jordan gave up a single and a walk to the first two batters he faced to load the bases.  Gavin Cross, the #1 prospect of the Kansas City Royals, stepped in to the box and sent a slow grounder to second baseman Robert Moore.  Wisconsin was able to get the force at second, but Brown’s throw to first was late to get the speedy Cross.  The fielder’s choice allowed the Bandits to score their first run of the game.  Jordan got the final out when Cayden Wallace flew out deep to center.

The Timber Rattlers sent Jordan back out for the ninth and he gave up a triple to Carter Jensen and an RBI single to Juan Carlos Negret to cut Wisconsin’s lead to one run.  The call went to the bullpen for Tanner Shears to put out the fire.

He got there, but it wasn’t easy.  River Town was trying to bunt Negret into scoring position.  However, Shears threw a wild pitch to let Negret take second.  Then, with Town still trying to bunt Negret up a base, Shears hit Town to put the winning run on first base and there still no outs in the frame.

The River Bandits stuck with the bunt, and it cost them an out and their manager.  Kale Emshoff bunted right to Martínez, who was charging hard from first base.  The throw went to third and Eduardo García had to stretch for the wide throw but held the bag in the view of base umpire Cliburn Rondon to retire Negret for the first out.  Brooks Conrad, the Bandits manager, who was coaching at third base, disagreed with the call, and was ejected after a brief, but intense argument.

Newton was at the plate to face Shears and had a full count before he sent a grounder to Moore at second.  This time the ball was hit hard enough, and the Rattlers were able to turn the 4-6-3 double play to end the game and celebrate their first four-game winning streak of the season.

The win was just the fourth one-run decision to go Wisconsin’s way this season.  The Rattlers are 4-14 in their eighteen games decided by one run this season.

Game three of the series is Friday night at Modern Woodmen Park.  Tyler Woessner (5-3, 2.70) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  The River Bandits will counter with Adrian Alcantara (0-3, 4.58).  Game time is 6:30pm CDT.

Glory look to end season strong at home

The Green Bay Glory have at least two more chances to get in the win column before its season ends this weekend.

They are scheduled to host table-leading Minnesota Aurora on Thursday before concluding the campaign against Bavarians United on Saturday. The Glory's match earlier this week against RKC Third Coast was postponed due to air quality concerns in the state. No make-up date has been announced.

The Glory have not won two in a row since the end of May and are winless since they beat Rochester on June 11th, a span of four matches.

Both the games on Thursday and Saturday begin at 6 p.m.

Rockers rocked by Woodchucks

The Green Bay Rockers' offense fasted while the Wausau Woodchucks feasted in a 14-0 win Wednesday night.

After the two teams went scoreless after 2.5 innings, the Woodchucks scored in every frame the rest of the game, including three in both the third and fourth innings and five in the eighth inning. Dalton Pearson led the way for the Woodchucks, knocking in four runs while going 2-5 with a home run. Colin Brueggemann also homered as six other Woodchucks drove in runs. Kyle West led the way offensively for the Rockers, going 2-4 with a double. Kyle Stoddard took the loss for the Rockers, giving up three runs in three innings of work.

The Rockers will try it again Thursday night in Wausau at 6:35 p.m.

Gamblers players wait for their names at NHL Draft

The Green Bay Gamblers hope to see several of its skaters walk across the stage in Nashville this week.

The 2023 NHL Entry Draft is taking place at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, with day two taking place on Thursday. No Gamblers were selected in the first round, a draft class led by Regina's (WHL) Conner Bedard, who was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks overall. Rounds 2-7 will take place on Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. The Green Bay Gamblers have offered comparisons to some of the players that are hoping to be drafted.

Doston, Rattlers Dump River Bandits

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers used an eight-run top of the third inning and overcame a sloppy bottom of the third inning to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits 11-4 at Modern Woodmen Park Wednesday night.  Terence Doston reached base four times in four plate appearances and either set the table or cleared the table for the Rattlers suddenly potent offense.

Wisconsin (3-1 second half, 29-39 overall) appeared to take control of the game with an eight-run third inning in which they sent thirteen men to the plate with seven straight batters reaching base with two outs to take an 8-0 lead.  The rally started with Doston and Eric Brown Jr drawing consecutive one-out walks.  Robert Moore singled to knock in Doston and send Brown to third.  Matt Wood followed with a sacrifice fly to score Brown for a 2-0 lead.

Then, the fun started.

Joe Gray Jr singled.  Darrien Miller singled to score Moore.  Ben Metzinger singled to knock in Gray.  Ernesto Martinez Jr singled to get Miller home and the Rattlers were up 5-0.  Eduarqui Fernández was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Doston drew another walk to force in a run and that was the end of the line for River Bandits starting pitcher Luinder Avila.

Brown capped the scoring with an RBI, infield single against reliever Luis Barroso.  A second run scored on an error on the play for the 8-0 lead.

The River Bandits (0-4, 32-38) didn’t let the Rattlers cruise home as they scored four unearned runs with help from three Wisconsin errors in the bottom of the third.

Rattlers starting pitcher Cameron Wagoner walked the lead-off batter.  A routine fly ball to right was dropped by Fernández to put two runners on base.  Javier Vaz singled to right on a 3-2 pitch with the runners moving to score a run and put runners on the corners.  Herard Gonzalez knocked in the second run of the inning with an infield grounder.  Then, Brown misplayed a grounder off the bat of Gavin Cross to allow Vaz to score.  Cross stole second and took third on a throwing error.

Cayden Wallace sent a routine grounder to Moore at second, but Martinez ranged far off the first base bag to try to field the ball, too.  No one was covering to take the throw, and Moore had to hold the ball as Wallace got an infield single to score Cross and end Wagoner’s night.  All four of the runs scored in the inning were unearned.

Nick Merkel got the final out of the inning on one pitch when Carter Jensen flew out to left.  Merkel would pitch 3-1/3 innings of scoreless relief and allowed just one hit to hold the line.

The Rattlers tacked on some insurance runs in the top of the eighth.  Martinez reached on catcher’s interference and Je’Von Ward singled.  Doston singled to left to score Martinez.  Ward and Doston pulled a double steal.  Brown and Moore had back-to-back sacrifice flies to score Ward and Doston for the 11-4 lead.

Sam Gardner, who took over for Merkel to start the bottom of the seventh, pitched three scoreless innings to pick up his first save in affiliate ball.  Gardner had been signed out of the independent Frontier League by the Milwaukee Brewers and assigned to Wisconsin earlier this month.

Doston was 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored, two RBI, and three stolen bases to pace the offense

Wisconsin has won three straight games and has scored a total of 31 runs on 33 hits in those three games.  This win marks the fifth time Wisconsin has won three straight games this season.

The Rattlers will get a crack at their first four-game winning streak of the season with game two of the series Thursday night at Modern Woodmen Park.  Stiven Cruz (2-5, 7.24) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Mason Barnett (2-3, 4.06) is set to start for the River Bandits.  Game time is 6:30pm CDT.

Brewers fall hard to Mets

Wasting away early scoring opportunities on Tuesday night came back to haunt the Milwaukee Brewers in their 7-2 loss to the New York Mets at Citi Field.

The Brewers had Mets starting pitcher David Peterson in trouble in the first three innings, but could not score, even with the bases loaded and one out in the first inning.

Peterson settled down and did not allow a run in six innings of work.  Brewer starter Julio Teheran started strong again but then gave up seven runs from the fourth through the sixth inning, including two home runs to Brandon Nimmo.

The Brewers managed to finally score in the eighth inning on a two-run single by Brian Anderson for Milwaukee’s only two runs.

Game three of the four-game series will be at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday with Wade Miley (5-2) going for the Brewers and Kodai Senga (6-5) pitching for the Mets.

Rockers topped by Dock Spiders in extra innings

The Green Bay Rockers lost a close one to the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders 3-2 in 11 innings in Northwoods League Baseball Tuesday night.  The Rockers took a 2-0 lead after one inning on a two-run homer by Kyle West, but saw the Dock Spiders score single runs in the sixth and eighth inning to tie the game.  The game would eventually go into extra innings with Fond du Lac (10-20) pulling out the walk-off win against Green Bay and snapping a five game losing streak.  The Rockers (17-13) will now host the Wausau Woodchucks at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday night.

First-round pick Van Ness signs with Packers

The Green Bay Packers announced the signing of their first-round pick Lukas Van Ess on Tuesday.

The 13th pick in the overall 2023 draft, Van Ess reportedly signed a four-year deal worth $17,388 million.  The Packers control a fifth-year option through the 2027 season.

Van Ess, a linebacker out of Iowa, was a Freshman All-American in 2021 and was second-team all-Big Ten in 2022.

The signing of Van Ess leaves the Packers with only second-round picks tight end Luke Musgrave and receiver Jayden Reed unsigned.

The Rockers opened the game with two runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Kyle West and a fielder's choice by Jack Holman. The two teams would trade runs the rest of the way, with Cooper Kelly driving in the winning run on a bases-loaded double play. George Wolkow also drove in a run for the Rockers. Brett Sanchez improved to 4-0 on the season, giving up three runs while striking out nine across six innings of work.

The Rockers are back at it Tuesday against the Dock Spiders, but they will head south for the 6:35 p.m. matchup.

Misiorowski Heading to 2023 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game

Jacob Misiorowski can add another city to his tour this season.  The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers right-hander has been selected to participate in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington on Saturday, July 8.

Misiorowski joined the Timber Rattlers from the Carolina Mudcats on June 6, and is 1-0 with twenty strikeouts in 15-2/3 innings pitched with Wisconsin.  MLB Pipeline placed him as the #93 prospect on their Top 100 list earlier this week.  Misiorowski is the #4 prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization according to MLB Pipeline.

Appleton Professional Baseball will be well represented at the All-Star Futures Game.  Former Timber Rattlers Jackson Chourio and Jeferson Quero have also been picked to play for the National League squad.

Additionally, Raul Ibañez will be the manager of the National League team in the game.  Ibañez played for the Appleton Foxes in 1993 and 1994 before going on to play in the Major Leagues with the Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Angels.

The SiriusXM Futures Game is a seven-inning game that features top prospects in Minor League Baseball as a kickoff to the All-Star Week festivities.  The Futures Game will air exclusively on Peacock.

This is the eighth time a Timber Rattler has been named to play in the Futures Game.  The previous six are: Chris Mears (1999), Craig Anderson (2000), Shin-Soo Choo (2002), Phillippe Aumont (2008), Bret Lawrie (2009), Tyler Thornburg (2011), and Antoine Kelly (2022).

There have been 30 previous Timber Rattlers or Rattlers alumni named to a Futures Game roster since the game started in 1999.  The list grows to 33 with the addition of Misiorowski, Chourio, and Quero as Futures Game invitees.

The Timber Rattlers start a road trip in Iowa on Wednesday.  Misiorowski is currently slated to start Sunday evening at Modern Woodmen Park against the Quad Cities River Bandits.  The next Wisconsin home game for the team is Tuesday, July 4 against the Beloit Sky Carp.  Tickets remain for that game and all remaining home games at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Rockers weathers delays, Kingfish

It took seven hours to finish only eight innings, but the Green Bay Rockers were able to eventually beat the Kenosha Kingfish 8-2.

The Rockers' Grayson Walker only faced two batters before both teams decided to wait out the rest of the downpour that was present at the onset of the game. Northwoods League officials ended up pushing the game back to 4:05 p.m., chasing several fans away from Capital Credit Union Park.

The Kingfish scored one run in each of the first two innings, but the Rockers scored two runs in both frames to stake themselves to a 4-2 lead. The Rockers would tack on an extra run in the fourth inning before finishing off the Kingfish with three runs in what proved to be the final at-bats for them. Rain, which delayed the game, canceled the rest of the game after a third wave of storms came through the Green Bay area.

Kyle West led the way for the Rockers when he homered in the seventh inning, driving in three runs. Mateo Matthews drove in two runs while Kendal Ewel, Austin Fawley, and JoJo Jackson added their own RBI.

The Rockers will hope for brighter skies on Monday when they host the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders.

Offense Pounds Sixteen Hits to Beat Lugnuts 12-4

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers banged out sixteen hits to beat the Lansing Lugnuts 12-4 on Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  Joe Gray Jr, who had a two-homer, six-RBI game on Saturday night, went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wisconsin hit parade.

The Lugnuts (32-36 overall, 1-2 second half) tagged Wisconsin starting pitcher Jacob Misiorowski with his first earned run as a Rattler when they scored in the first inning.  Misiorowski walked Jonny Butler on a 3-2 pitch to start the game.  Jack Winkler doubled on the next offering to put runners on the corners.  Misiorowski got the first out on an infield popup but gave up the run on a slow chopper to third off the bat of Danny Bautista.  The throw to the plate was a little off target and Butler scored for a 1-0 lead.

Misiorowski bounced back to strike out the next two batters to end the inning.

The Timber Rattlers went in front in the second inning.  Gray tripled, and Darrien Miller walked to start the inning.  Ben Metzinger punched a single through the right side of the infield to score Gray with the tying run.  Ernesto Martinez Jr doubled to the corner in right to knock in Miller.  Then, Eduarqui Fernández singled to score two more runs for a 4-1 lead.

Winkler started the third inning with a double and took third on a one-out single by Danny Bautista.  Wisconsin got the second out when Bautista was thrown out at second trying to steal.  However, Misiorowski could not get out of the inning.

He went to full counts on the next two batters as a steady rain was falling before walking both to load the bases.  A wild pitch let Winkler score before another walk on a full count reloaded the bases.  That would be the end of the day for Misiorowski.  Brannon Jordan came in from the bullpen to get the final out of the inning and keep the Rattlers in the lead.

Misiorowski racked up 67 pitches in the game with 33 pitches occurring in the top of the third inning.  He allowed his first two earned runs as a Rattler, walked four, allowed four hits, and struck out five in the game.

Wisconsin’s offense went back to work in the bottom of the third as the first five hitters reached base.  Matt Wood started the onslaught with a single.  Gray followed with an RBI double.  Miller singled to score Gray for a 6-2 lead.  Metzinger singled before Martinez was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs and chase Lansing starting pitcher Joelvis Del Rosario from the game.

Terence Doston singled with one out to drive in two runs against reliever Kumar Nambiar for an 8-2 advantage.

Gray, who had singled in the fourth inning stepped to the plate with the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the sixth with a chance for the cycle.  He would fly out to center for a sacrifice fly to make it 9-2.

The Lugnuts scored twice in the top of the seventh inning with two outs.  Bautista and Brayan Buelvas doubled to get the first run home.  Clark Elliot singled to score Buelvas.  Tanner Shears took over and gave up a single and a hit batsman to load the bases before getting the final out of the inning with the Rattlers up 9-4.

Wisconsin put the game away after the stretch.  Robert Moore stepped in with the based loaded and one out and knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly that was deep enough to advance all three runners a base.  Wood singled in two more runs for a 12-4 lead.  That brought Gray to the plate for another chance to complete his cycle and he brought the crowd to its feet with a deep drive to center that fell short of the second cycle in Timber Rattlers history.

Jordan, Karlos Morales, Tanner Spence, and Luis Amaya covered 6-1/3 innings out of the bullpen and allowed two runs and struck out eight while allowed one walk.  Amaya closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning just before another downpour hit the stadium.

The Rattlers set new single-game highs for the season in hits and runs.  All nine members of the Wisconsin hitters had at least one hit.  Eight of nine hitters drove in at least one run.

Wisconsin won the final two games of the series to split the six-game series with the Lugnuts.  The Rattlers wrapped up three straight weeks against the East Division with a 10-7 record.

The team drew 26,010 fans for the six-game series that ended on Sunday for an average of 4,335 fans per game.

The Timber Rattlers are off until Wednesday when they begin a six-game series against the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park.  Game time is 6:30pm CDT.

Glory finish off final week of the season

The Green Bay Glory hopes they are able to end the season on a positive note with three matches in six days beginning Tuesday.

The Glory lost their rematch against the Chicago Dutch Lions 4-2 in the Chicagoland area on Saturday. The Dutch Lions were up 2-0 when Skylar Prentice got the Glory on the scoreboard in the 26th minute. The Dutch Lions got that goal back just before halftime and tacked on another in the 60th minute to make 4-1. Shea-Lynn Gerred tacked one more goal for the Glory just as they entered stoppage time to still come up short in the game.

The Glory finish the season with a match Tuesday in Racine followed by home matches on Thursday and Saturday against Minnesota Aurora and Bavarian United.

Washington Island wins condensed game over A's on 105.1 The GOAT

In a game that consisted of a hour long rain delay, tarps being put on the field, and just six innings being played, the Washington Island Islanders defeated the Baileys Harbor A's on 105.1 The GOAT Sunday afternoon.

With the game getting itself underway at 2:30 instead of 1:30 because of the rain, the teams were quick in and out of the dugout, and Washington Island was also quick onto the scoreboard as well. Caleb Cornell, Ben Johnson, and Bennett Isaacson were responsible for scoring the three runs in the first inning giving the Islanders an early 3-0 lead.

Ryan Jorgenson had the A's offense in the palm of his hand early, as through the first three innings of pitching, Jorgenson did not let a runner reach further than second base.

Washington Island however, would continue to rack up runs as they would bring a run home in the third and fourth inning, to make the game 5-0 into the fifth inning. The rain would then begin to pick up substantially in the fifth as Baileys Harbor was able to get a run across the board as Randy Martinez picked up another RBI scoring River Pawelski. Martinez has drove in each run in the past two games for the A's.

In the 6th, Washington Island would put the game out of reach with six hits and a plethera of pinch batters, making the score final at 12-1 after Will Henrikson shut down the bottom of the sixth inning.

Luxemburg fishing team finishes in top 30

A Top 30 high school fishing duo call Luxemburg home.

Charlie Simonar and Jacob Martin finished in 29th place, catching one fish that weighed in at just above two pounds.

The winning team came to LaCrosse from Arizona, catching three fish totaling more than 10 pounds. The Luxemburg Spartans clinched their spot in the world finals with a strong showing in the second chance tournament.

Packers distribute proxy materials to stockholders

If you are a stockholder, you can cast your ballot for who you think should join the Green Bay Packers Board of Directors.

The organization recently sent the proxy materials to its 539,000 stockholders ahead of its annual meeting on July 24th at 11 a.m. Among the business being taken care of is the possible election of LeRoy Butler, Laurie Radke, Sachin Shivaram and Christopher Stiles. You can read about the candidates here.

Shareholders are eligible for four tickets to the annual meeting, which covers the football and the business operations of the franchise.

Islanders pay a visit to Baileys Harbor on 105.1 The GOAT

The Washington Island Islanders have kept their title hopes alive throughout the season and hope to continue the successful season against Baileys Harbor in week seven.

If the rain holds off Sunday afternoon, Washington Island will look to build off its big time win over West Jacksonport last week. Troy Jorgenson and Matt Foss have been the big time batters for the Islanders so far this season, and will look to bring the offense once again against an A's team who gave up 11 runs to Kolberg last week.

Baileys Harbor has stumbled a bit after picking up their first win in years, but have still been able to keep themselves relatively in striking distance in games. Against Kolberg, the A's left too many runners stranded in scoring position, something they will need to clean up down the stretch of the season. Chris Lodl has been a bright spot however for the A's.

Gary Barta and Jacob Nate will have the call from Baileys Harbor on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 1:15 p.m with the pregame show and  first pitch at 1:30 p.m. between the A's and the Islanders.

Other games around the DCBL include West Jacksonport at Kolberg, Institute visiting Egg Harbor, and Maplewood taking the trip up to Sister Bay.

Glory looks to avenge loss to Dutch Lions

The Green Bay Glory will have another shot to avenge their Father's Day loss to the Chicago Dutch Lions on Saturday when they travel to the Windy City.

For the second straight match, the Green Bay Glory had a clean sheet posted against them as they dropped their contest against the Chicago Dutch Lions 3-0. The Dutch Lions posted two goals early as Megan Norkett tallied goals in the 8th and 11th minute to send the visitors to a 2-0 halftime lead. Christine Erdman added an insurance goal in the 90th minute to send the Glory to their second straight defeat. After posting a 3-1 win at the Banta Bowl against Rochester FC, the Glory have been outscored 8-0.

The Glory starts the day in fifth place on the USL W Central Conference Heartland Division table with nine points (3-5-0) after losing four of their last five matches. They could move to a tie with the Dutch Lions and be just a point behind third-place Bavarian United with a victory at Spartan Athletic Park in Montgomery, Illinois. The first kick is set for 7 p.m.

Luxemburg anglers make world finals in LaCrosse

Luxemburg, Wis. is high on the leaderboard at the Student Angler Federation High School Fishing World Finals in LaCrosse this weekend.

The Luxemburg Spartans, made up of Charlie Simonar and Jacob Martin, found themselves in fifth place in the second chance round, catching three fish totaling 10-06 pounds, exactly one pound behind the leaders.

Aidan Zeitler and Isaac Yunk reprsenting the Algoma Fishing Team found themselves in 123rd place with three fish totaling just over six pounds. Algoma's Kayleigh Woelfel and Emily Hanson ended their day with one fish at three pounds, putting themselves just outside of the Top 200.

Green Bay rocked by Madison

The Madison Mallards put up crooked numbers in three of the final four innings to trounce the Green Bay Rockers 12-2.

The Rockers could only muster single tallies in the sixth and eighth innings after finding themselves down 5-0 early with solo homers by Kendal Ewell and Kyle West providing the offense.

The Rockers return home this weekend for games against the Kenosha Kingfish.

Lansing Tops Rattlers in Second Half Opener

The Lansing Lugnuts manufactured enough runs and got stellar relief work to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-2 Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in the opening game of the second half of the Midwest League season for both teams.  The Lugnuts have won three straight in the series.

Lansing (32-34 overall, 1-0 second half) took the lead in the first inning.  Max Muncy doubled to start the game.  He went to third on a grounder up the middle.  Daniel Susac followed with an RBI grounder for the 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin26-39, 0-1) went in front in the third inning.  Darrien Miller knocked in Robert Moore and Matt Wood with a single to center.

Susac brought the Lugnuts back to even in the top of the fourth inning.  He doubled to start the inning and took third on a flyout to deep right-center field.  Brayan Buelvas tied the score with a sacrifice fly to left.

The Lugnuts went back in front in the top of the fifth.  Muncy singled to drive in the go-ahead run for a 3-2 lead.

Wisconsin had a great opportunity to tie the game in their half of the fifth.  Moore tripled to right with one out.  However, he was cut down at the plate on a grounder to first base off the bat of Wood.  Jack Winkler fielded the ball cleanly and fired home to get Moore and stop the Rattlers rally in its tracks.

An unearned run in the top of the eighth inning gave Lansing a 4-2 lead.

That lead was insurmountable for the Rattlers as the Lansing relievers retired all twelve batters they faced.  Stevie Emanuels pitched a perfect sixth and seventh with four strikeouts.  Tyler Baum is now 8-for-8 in save opportunities after he closed out the game with a perfect eighth and a perfect ninth with three strikeouts.

Tyler Woessner was the starter for the Timber Rattlers and allowed three runs on five hits over six innings for his fifth quality start of the season.  Woessner walked one, struck out one, and was charged with the loss.

Game four of the series is Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Edwin Jimenez (2-1, 3.38) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  The Lugnuts have named Jacob Watters (1-5, 6.50) as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 6:40pm CDT.

Playoff push takes Blizzard to Sioux Falls

The 6-5 Green Bay Blizzard can do something they have not done since 2019 with a strong finish to the end of the season, including Friday's game against Sioux Falls.

The Blizzard are looking to clinch their first post-pandemic playoff berth after winning four of their last five games. That includes a win two weeks ago that saw the Blizzard hold on to beat the Quad City Steamwheelers 45-38 despite being outscored in the fourth quarter 22-3. Max Meylor protected the ball while scoring four total touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) on the evening.

The Storm is a team trying to hold off the Blizzard in the standings with a 6-5 record, but a slightly better conference mark to hold the tiebreaker.

The Storm and Blizzard will battle at 7:05 p.m. in Sioux Falls.

Rockers doubled up by Mallards

The Madison Mallards scored four runs in the third inning to sprint past the Green Bay Rockers to a 6-3 victory at the Duck Blind in the Capitol City Thursday night.

The Rockers took a 3-0 lead in the second inning thanks to homers by Mateo Matthews and Nainoa Cardinez, but pitcher Grayson Miller struggled in the third inning after giving up a run in the second inning. Consecutive extra-base hits cleared the bases and staked the Mallards to a 5-3 victory. The Mallards would tack on one more run later in the game to end any threat of a comeback.

The Rockers play the Mallards once more at Warner Park in Madison before returning home to play Kenosha on Saturday and Sunday.

Bucks draft Livingston, snag Jackson in NBA Draft

The Milwaukee Bucks added two new players through the NBA Draft Thursday in the wake of the news that Khris Middleton would be testing free agency waters this summer.

The Bucks first traded a future second-round pick and cash considerations to the Orlando Magic to select UConn guard Andre Jackson, Jr.  He averaged 4.6 assists per game for the National Champion Huskies last season.

The Bucks used their lone pick heading into the night and the final selection of the NBA Draft to select forward Chris Livingston out of Kentucky. A member of the All-SEC Freshman Team last year, Livingston averaged 6.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.

Rattlers End First Half with a Close Loss to Lansing

The Lansing Lugnuts broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the seventh inning and held on to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-3 in Thursday’s game at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  The game was the final game of the first half for both teams.

Wisconsin (26-38) took the lead in the bottom of the first.  Darrien Miller doubled with two outs to score the first two runs of the game.

Lansing (31-34) stormed back to tie the game in the top of the second.  They loaded the bases on two walks and a single with one out.  Euribiel Angeles singled on a 2-2 pitch to left to score the tying runs.

Miller singled to start the Wisconsin fourth inning, but he was still there with two outs.  Ernesto Martínez Jr made sure Miller wasn’t stranded.  Martínez lined a double off the top of the wall by the Lansing bullpen for a double and Miller just beat the throw home for a 3-2 lead.

Stiven Cruz, the Wisconsin starter got the first two outs in the top of the fifth inning but could not get out of the frame with the lead.  Daniel Susac hit a triple off the wall in center.  Junior Perez singled to left on a 1-2 pitch to score Susac and even the score again.

The Lugnuts took their first lead of the evening in the top of the seventh.  Angeles tripled to start the inning.  Max Muncy knocked in Angeles with a high chopper to short for the 4-3 advantage.

Robert Moore gave the Timber Rattlers their best chance to rally when he started the bottom of the eighth with a double against Christian Fernandez.  However, Fernandez got a liner to second and back-to-back strikeouts to maintain the lead.  Fernandez retired Wisconsin in order in the bottom of the ninth for his first save of the season.

Game four of the series is Friday night and it is also the first game of the second half of the season.  Tyler Woessner (5-2, 2.52) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Jake Garland (1-3, 7.82) is set to start for the Lugnuts.  Game time is 6:40pm CDT.

Rockers split doubleheader against Rafters

The Green Bay Rockers were able to salvage one of their two games against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, splitting their doubleheader on Wednesday.

In their 11-4 loss, the Rafters scored three runs in the first inning and poured it on after the Rockers got to within one tally in the fifth. The Rafters' Brendan Bobo led the way, going 1-3 with two walks and a home run. The Rockers' Carlos Hernandez nearly matched him, going 2-4 with a solo homer.

The Rockers took the nightcap 6-5 when the Rafters' three-run rally in the sixth inning proved to be not enough. Hernandez, Lukas Schramm, Kendall Ewell, Austin Fawley, and Mateo Matthews all drove in runs in the win.

The Rockers take on the Madison Mallards at 6:05 p.m. on the road.

Report: Middleton declines option with Bucks

One of the faces of the Milwaukee Bucks organization could be heading to greener pastures.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported late Wednesday night that Khris Middleton declined his $40 million option to return to the team and he will instead test the waters of free agency. There is a chance Middleton could return on a more cap-friendly deal after the 32-year-old star had knee surgery in the offseason after the Bucks failed to get out of the first round of the NBA Playoffs this spring. Middleton's 10-year tenure with the Bucks has coincided with the team's most prosperous stretch in decades including the 2021 NBA Championship.

Southern Door to host groundbreaking for new athletic facility

Southern Door School District has gotten a head start on some of the referendum projects, but they will officially mark the occasion on June 28th with a groundbreaking ceremony.

While the referendum will also cover replacing an aging septic system, relocating the district office, adding more parking, constructing a new bus garage, and more improvements, the biggest change to the Brussels skyline will be a new indoor athletic-training facility. In addition to the turf gym, the new facility will also house the improved Talon Fitness Center, which will make the move from its current location so the district office can take over the space.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place in front of the old District office, which is south of the main circle parking lot on the school’s campus, located at 2073 County Hwy. DK in Brussels. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2024 with Miron Construction Co., Inc. serving as the construction manager and Bray Architects serving as the architect.

Lansing Cycles Past Wisconsin 7-1

Jack Winkler went 4-for-4 as he hit for the cycle and drove in four runs to lead the Lansing Lugnuts to a 7-1 over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Wednesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  The Rattlers broke up the shutout with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning and their brief two-game losing streak came to an end.

The Timber Rattlers (26-37) had a great chance to score in the first inning.  Robert Moore singled to start the frame.  Joe Gray Jr singled with one out to extend his hitting streak to nine games.  Brady Basso, the Lansing starting pitcher got the next batter to ground into an inning-ending double play.  The Rattlers wouldn’t get another hit until the sixth inning and didn’t get another runner into scoring position until the eighth.

Lansing (29-35) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on back-to-back doubles by Junior Perez and Winkler.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Cameron Wagoner kept the Lugnuts off the scoreboard in the third and fourth innings, but issued two walks, including one with two outs, in the fifth inning.  That second walk would be costly.

Daniel Susac greeted reliever Michele Vassalotti with a seeing-eye single to right to score Lansing’s second run.

Perez and Winkler teamed up to get the next two runs for the Lugnuts.  Perez reached on his third double of the game to start the sixth.  Winkler, who had singled in the fourth, homered just fair to left and the Lugnuts were up 4-0.  They would tack on one more run in the inning on a two-out, RBI double by Max Muncy.

Jonny Butler homered off Sam Gardner in the top of the seventh.  Then, Perez and Winkler got together one more time.  Perez reached on an error.  Winkler sent a sinking liner to right.  Gray tried for a diving catch, but the ball got by him and Winkler raced around for third for the cycle as Perez scored for a 7-0 lead.

The Rattlers avoided the shutout in their half of the eighth.  Terence Doston and Jose Acosta each singled with one out to put runners on the corners.  Moore hit a line drive to left and Butler made a leaping grab for the second out with Doston tagging to score on the sacrifice fly.

Moore is the Wisconsin team leader in RBI with 32.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Stiven Cruz (2-5, 7.43) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Lansing has named Jose Dicochea (0-0, 4.15) as their starter.  Game time is 6:40 pm.

Thursday is the start of Udder Tuggers weekend at the ballpark with players and coaches wearing Udder Tuggers jerseys for the remainder of the series with the Lugnuts.

Southern Door hires new head volleyball coach

The Southern Door School District has announced their new Head Varsity Volleyball Coach as Tehya Bertrand, an alumna of the school district.

Bertrand was a three-sport athlete in her time at Southern Door, competing in volleyball, basketball, and softball. After graduating from the district in 2019, she went on to graduate from Viterbo University in LaCrosse.

Bertrand was a High Honors student in high school and was a Dean's List recipient in college. She will be a first-year varsity coach and will replace former Southern Door Head Volleyball Coach Lisa Kain who lead the Eagles to a 23-13 overall record in the 2022 season and an appearance in the Regional Title game.

Brewers rally in comeback over Diamondbacks

The Milwaukee Brewers tallied four runs in the seventh inning to overcome a 4-0 early deficit against the Arizona Diamondbacks for a 7-5 victory at American Family Field Tuesday night.  William Contreras delivered a key two-run double in the seventh inning to lead the Brewers to the win.

Arizona jumped on Brewer starter Colin Rea with four runs in the first two innings, capped by a three-run home run by Ketel Marte in the second inning.

The Brewers eventually got back into the game when Jesse Winker broke out of a slump with a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 4-3.

Arizona added a run in the sixth, before the Brewers rallied for the second time in three games.

Reliever Bryse Wilson (2-0) recorded the last out in the seventh to get the win and Devin Williams came on in the ninth inning to pick up his 13th save of the season.

The Brewers (38-35) will play the rubber game of the series with Arizona on Wednesday at 1:10 p.m before heading on the road for a interleague matchup on Thursday with the Cleveland Guardians.

Timber Rattlers Shut Out Lansing

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were playing well on their two-week road trip to Michigan and that carried over to the first home game since June 4 with a 3-0 win over the Lansing Lugnuts at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Tuesday night.  Jacob Misiorowski, Karlos Morales, Brannon Jordan, and Luis Amaya held the Lugnuts to four hits as the Rattlers offense was opportunistic in scoring all their runs in the second inning.

Wisconsin (26-36) took advantage of some uncharacteristic mistakes by the Lugnuts to score three runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Darrien Miller drew a walk and Eduardo García singled to start the inning.  Ben Metzinger sent a slow grounder to short with one out and the throw to first was wild to let Miller score and García take third base.  Lansing entered Wednesday’s game tied for second in the league in fielding percentage.

Lugnuts starting pitcher Joelvis Del Rosario compounded the error by throwing a wild pitch that allowed García to score and put Metzinger on second base.  Je’Von Ward followed with an RBI single to score Metzinger for a 3-0 lead.

Misiorowski, Milwaukee’s top pitching prospect, worked 4-2/3 innings, walked two, allowed three hits, and struck out five without allowing a run.  His biggest jam was in the fourth inning as he needed 27 pitches in the inning to work around two walks and a single to leave the bases loaded.  In all, Misiorowski threw 86 pitches with 52 strikes before giving way to the Wisconsin bullpen one out shy of qualifying for the win in his home debut.

Morales got the final out of the fifth, tossed a scoreless sixth, and had two outs with a runner at third in the seventh before a walk to Max Muncy ended his night.  Morales would pick up the win, his third of the season.

Jordan entered the game for Morales and got a strikeout to end that Lansing threat.  He would work a 1-2-3 eighth inning.

The Lugnuts (29-34) would face Amaya in the top of the ninth inning.  He got the first two outs before giving up a single to Danny Bautista to extend the game.  Amaya, who picked up the save in Sunday’s road trip finale in Great Lakes, got the final out of the game on a flyball to center to seal Wisconsin’s second shutout of the season.

The last time the Timber Rattlers recorded a shutout was on April 19, in a 2-0 victory at Quad Cities.

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon.  Cameron Wagoner (1-8, 7.66) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Lansing has Brady Basso (1-2, 2.70) as their starter.  Game time is 12:10pm CDT.

Green Bay basketball players move in

The 2023-2024 season is months away, but the start of their chemistry building is already a few days old.

Like many of the school's student-athletes, the two basketball teams moved into their respective dorm rooms over the weekend so they can get a jumpstart on coursework and their offseason programs.

Both teams are also helping their respective coaches with their youth camps. Women's Coach Kevin Borseth hosted their first-ever Little Phoenix Camp last week with some of the community's youngest fans. New men's coach Sundance Wicks kicked off his first youth camp on Monday.

The women's team looks to clinch their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in several years while the men's squad looks to erase the memories of the Will Ryan era when they take the court for their first games in November.

Rockers hook Chinooks late

The Green Bay Rockers kept their spot on top of the Northwoods League on Monday night with a 7-5 win over the Lakeshore Chinooks.

Things looked dire heading into the bottom of the eighth inning before Carlos Hernandez sent a ball over the right field fence for the game-winning three-run homer. He finished with three hits and four RBI on the night. Cooper Kelly and Jo Jo Jackson also knocked in runs for the host Rockers.

The same two teams matchup Tuesday night at Capital Credit Union Park at 6:35 p.m.

Dutch Lions claw past Glory

For the second straight match, the Green Bay Glory had a clean sheet posted against them as they dropped their contest against the Chicago Dutch Lions 3-0.

The Dutch Lions posted two goals early as Megan Norkett tallied goals in the 8th and 11th minute to send the visitors to a 2-0 halftime lead. Christine Erdman added an insurance goal in the 90th minute to send the Glory to their second straight defeat. After posting a 3-1 win at the Banta Bowl against Rochester FC, the Glory have been outscored 8-0.

The Glory will try to avenge their loss against the Dutch Lions when they head down to Chicago to face them on June 24th.

Wisconsin Wraps Two-Week Road Trip with Thrilling Win

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were at the end of a road trip to Michigan that started with a travel day on June 5 as they took on the Great Lakes Loons on Sunday at Dow Diamond.  The Rattlers were down 4-0 and 6-3, but they weren’t going home with a loss.  The Rattlers stormed back for a 10-8 win over the Loons.  Ernesto Martínez Jr led the way with three hits, including a three-run homer, and three runs scored.  Robert Moore added three hits and two big RBI to Wisconsin’s thirteen-hit attack in the come-from-behind win.

Wisconsin (24-36) didn’t do themselves any favors in the bottom of the second inning as the Loons (42-20) scored four runs on just two hits.  The inning started with Edwin Jimenez walking Damon Keith.  Then, Jimenez uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Keith to race all the way to third.  Jimenez got the first out on a shallow fly to right before walking Max Hewitt on a 3-2 pitch.  Jimenez threw his second wild pitch of the inning to score Keith and send Hewitt to second.

Chris Alleyne reached on single on a weak grounder to first to put runners at the corners.  Max Vogel followed with a double to the corner in left for a 3-0 lead.

Vogel would steal third and score when he beat the throw home on a slow grounder to second with the infield in on the grass to make it 4-0.

Great Lakes returned the favor in the top of the fourth inning as Wisconsin scored three unearned runs to get close.  Alex Hall reached on an error and Eduardo García had an infield single.  Martínez was down in the count 1-2 with two outs when he lined an opposite field homer to get the Rattlers to within a run.

However, Jimenez would hit a batter and walk a batter in the bottom of the inning to set the stage for Vogel, who lined a double to the corner in left to score both runners for a 6-3 lead.

Max Lazar took over in the fifth inning for Jimenez and worked to perfect innings of relief to hold the line.

The Wisconsin offense wasn’t fazed by the deficit.  In the top of the seventh, Wisconsin got to reliever Robbie Peto for five runs on six hits to take the lead.

Martínez and Terence Doston started the inning with consecutive singles.  Both hits came with two strikes.  Moore, who homered against Peto on June 13, smacked a double off the top of the wall in right to score Martínez.  Darrien Miller knocked in Doston with a grounder to pull Wisconsin to within a run.

Joe Gray Jr kept the inning rolling with a hard grounder towards left that was knocked down for an infield single to put runners on the corners.

Wisconsin took their first lead of the game when Alex Hall chopped a grounder behind the mound for an infield single to score Moore with the tying run.  A wild throw to first allowed Gray, who was running on the pitch, scored easily and the Rattlers were up 7-6 with Hall taking second on the play.

García followed with an RBI single to score Hall for an 8-6 advantage.

The Loons made it a one-run game when Chris Newell blasted a two-out, solo homer to center in the bottom of the seventh off Tanner Shears.

Wisconsin got some insurance in the top of the eighth with a pair of runs.  Martínez and Doston started the rally with a single and a walk.  Moore cashed in Martínez with a single.  Later in the inning, Gray drove in Doston with an infield grounder for a 10-7 lead.

Shears worked a scoreless eighth and got the first out in the ninth before walking the next two batters to bring the tying run to the plate.

Luis Amaya was called into the game from the Wisconsin bullpen, and he gave up a single to Frank Rodríguez to score a run, put runners on the corners, and bring the winning run to the plate.

Amaya didn’t blink.  He got Yeiner Fernández to ground into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play for his first save of the season.

The win garnered the Timber Rattlers a split in the six-game series with the Loons.  Wisconsin wrapped up their two-week road trip to Michigan with a 7-4 record.  The Rattlers were 4-1 at West Michigan before going 3-3 with the Loons.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday and return to action on Tuesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium to begin a six-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts.  Jacob Misiorowski (1-0, 0.00) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers.  Joelvis Del Rosario (0-3, 3.51) is the announced starting pitcher for Lansing.  Game time is 6:40pm CDT.

Rockers bit by Jacks late

The Battle Creek Jacks scored two runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth to top the streaking Green Bay Rockers 5-3 to end a six-game winning streak.

The Rockers took one-run leads in the third and fifth innings before eventually falling to the host Jacks with Jayson Jones' RBI single and a Kyle West home run providing the momentary moments of hope. Kyle Stoddard ran out of gas in the seventh, allowing two runs before exiting the game for Cooper Dorsett after going six innings in his start, striking out seven Jacks but giving up four runs.

The Rockers return home Monday when they host the Lakeshore Chinooks at 6:35 p.m.

Schneider leads Kolberg to dominant win on 105.1 The GOAT

It was a game dominated by Kolberg after the top of the first inning, as the Braves cruised to a 11-1 victory over the Baileys Harbor A’s on Sunday afternoon.

Chris Lodl got things going early for the A’s to begin the game as he singled under shortstop Tyler Neinas’ glove and was then brought in on a Randy Martinez single into center field. This would be the lone run for Baileys Harbor throughout the game as Jake Schneider would then find his groove.

It would not take long for Kolberg to answer as the Braves designated hitter Trevor Reinhardt would rope a two-run home run over the left field wall to make it 2-1 Kolberg. Reinhardt would then come up to bat in the second inning and hit once again another two-run home run, but this time over the tall fence in right field to give the Braves a 6-1 lead after two.

Starting Pitcher Jake Schneider would dominate the middle innings of the ball game as he would go on a run of eight consecutive strikeouts from the third to fifth inning, and only had a walk to the A’s lead off batter as his mistake throughout those ten batters. Schneider would finish the game with 13 total strikeouts in six innings pitched, giving up seven hits with just one run allowed.

Tyler Neinas had one of the better hitting days for the Braves as he went 3-4 and reached base in all four at bats as he reached on a fielder's choice in the 3rd inning. Kolberg moves to 5-1 and stays atop the DCBL Standings while Baileys Harbor falls to 1-5.

Other Door County Baseball League Games:

Kolberg looks to ride momentum on 105.1 The GOAT

After taking the long trip to Washington Island and coming back with a crucial win, the Kolberg Braves will be treated to a home game as they host the Baileys Harbor A’s Sunday afternoon.

Kolberg proved their dominance in the DCBL taking down the Islanders 5-0 behind the strong arm of Jake Schneider. Although the offense hasn’t been as strong as past years, the Braves are doing enough to get wins in convincing fashion, but could use this game against the A’s to find that offensive firepower that won them the championship last season. With the high school season being out for a few weeks as well, the Braves will find some of that offense from those players.

The A’s have found some offense of their own, although it came in the form of a loss. Baileys Harbor fell to West Jacksonport 22-12, but have impressed on the offensive end throughout the season. The A’s are 1-4 overall while Kolberg sits in second at 4-1 in the standings due to games played behind the Bays of Sister Bay who played on Friday night.

Gary Barta and Reece Robillard will have the call from Kolberg on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 1:15 for the pregame show and 1:30 for first pitch between the Braves and A’s.

Other games in the Door County Baseball League on Sunday include West Jacksonport taking the ferry to Washington Island and Egg Harbor hosting Maplewood.

Bays drub Cubs on 105.1 The GOAT

The Sister Bay Bays batted around three separate times Friday night en route to a 21-2 win over the host Institute Cubs.

The Bays set the tone early with five runs in the first inning before batting around in the fourth, fifth, and very nearly in the sixth inning. Unforced mistakes by the Cubs led to several rallies as 26 of the total 38 baserunners for the Bays reached via a walk, error, hit batsmen, or fielder's choice. Tom Sawyer reached base seven times, collecting three hits and knocking in four runs. Griffin Cole had four hits and Sam Forkert chipped in a pair while five others had at least one hit.

The Bays pitching staff of Forkert, Spencer Krause, and Matt Hecht did not allow the Cubs to experience much happiness offensively, striking out 12 while allowing just three hits. Will Hartman was the star of the game for the Cubs, who complemented an RBI double in the third inning with back-to-back highlight-reel grabs in center field to thwart a Bays rally in the seventh inning. Nick Peterson scored both runs for the Cubs in the loss.

The Bays improve to 5-1 in the Door County Baseball League while the Cubs drop to 0-6. NEW Radio Sports Network and 105.1 The GOAT will be in Kolberg on Sunday for the Braves' matchup against the Baileys Harbor A's. Gary Barta and Reece Robillard will have the call beginning at 1:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 1:30 p.m. Other games include West Jacksonport heading to Washington Island and Egg Harbor hosting Maplewood.

Rattlers Stun Loons With Extra-Inning Victory

Both the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Great Lakes Loons were down to their final out in the ninth inning on Friday Night at Dow Diamond.  Both teams received clutch home runs to extend the game to extra innings where Joe Gray Jr’s two-out, RBI single was enough to send the Rattlers to an 8-7 victory over the team with the best record in the High-A classification of Minor League Baseball.

Chris Alleyne put the Loons (41-19) up in the bottom of the first inning with a lead-off home run.  The homer was Alleyne’s second of the season.

Great Lakes added to their lead with two runs in the bottom of the second.  A walk and a double by the first two hitters put runners on second and third with no outs.  Max Hewitt and Frank Rodriguez had consecutive sacrifice flies to score the runs for a 3-0 advantage.

The Loons had four singles in the third inning and scored two more runs for a 5-0 lead.  Damon Keith and Taylor Young provided the RBI singles in the inning.

Wisconsin loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fourth inning on a walk by Great Lakes starting pitcher Maddux Bruns and two walks by reliever Frankie De La Paz.  The Rattlers could not cash in and left the bases loaded.

Jose Acosta singled, stole second, and went to third on a grounder in the top of the fifth inning.  Gray reached on an infield single to score Acosta with the Rattlers first run.

Reliever Michele Vassalotti held the Loons off the scoreboard with three perfect innings, including six strikeouts, to keep Wisconsin in the game

Then things got very interesting.

The Timber Rattlers bats came alive in the top of the seventh to score four runs and tie the score against Orlando Ortiz.  Acosta started the inning with a single with Robert Moore following with a walk.  Gray singled with one out to load the bases.  Darrien Miller drove in Acosta with a sacrifice fly.  The play pulled the Rattlers to within 5-2, but it was also the second out of the inning.

Ben Metzinger was next, and he lined a single to right to score Moore.  Keith overran the ball to allow Gray score from first.  Metzinger wound up at second base as the tying run.

Eduardo García followed with a single to left to score Metzinger with the tying run.

Karlos Morales took over for Vassalotti and retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the seventh.  However, a four-pitch walk, and a wild pitch put the lead run on second.  Yeiner Fernandez made Wisconsin pay for the lapse with a single up the middle to give the Loons a 6-5 lead.

The score remained that way to the ninth.  Reinaldo De Paula, the Loons fifth pitcher of the game, got the final out of the eighth and the first two batters in the ninth.  García kept the game alive with a single to center on an 0-2 pitch.  Then, Alex Hall sent the Timber Rattlers dugout into a celebratory mood as he hammered a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right-center for a 7-6 lead.

The homer was the sixth of the season for Hall, but his first since April 21.

Brannon Jordan entered the game in the bottom of the ninth and retired the first two batters he faced to bring the Rattlers to within one out of victory.  Chris Newell, who had thirteen homers in the California League before his call up to Great Lakes earlier this month, had other ideas.  Newell hit a long homer to right-center on the first pitch of his at bat to tie the game 7-7.

In the top of the tenth, Acosta started the inning at second.  He was standing at third with two outs after a pair of grounders to the right side.  Gray punched an 0-1 pitch through the right side of the infield for his fourth hit of the game and this RBI single scored Acosta for an 8-7 lead.

Jordan went back out for the bottom of the tenth and set down the side in order with a pair of strikeouts and a popout to leave the tying run stranded at second base.

The Timber Rattlers were 0-32 when trailing after eight innings prior to the game on Friday night.

Gray now has three four-hit games as a Timber Rattler.  He also had four hits against Peoria on June 3, 2022 and against Great Lakes on August 13, 2021.

Game five of the series is Saturday night at Dow Diamond.  Tyler Woessner (5-1, 2.38) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers.  Kendall Williams is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Loons.  Williams will be making his Midwest League debut in this contest.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

DCBL kicks off weekend under lights on 105.1 The GOAT

The Door County Baseball League will kick off the weekend under the lights of Institute Friday night when the Cubs play host to the Sister Bay.

Last week, the Cubs fell hard to the Maplewood Mets 20-3, which included a 15-run fourth inning that saw the game fail to reach the ninth inning. Ethan Kroll and Brent Haberli drove in two of the three runs for the Cubs while Elijah Reimer took the brunt of the damage against the Mets, giving up 13 runs in his two-thirds of an inning pitched.

The Bays found success at home against Egg Harbor in a 9-2 win last Sunday. Sam Forkert was automatic on the mound for Sister Bay, going seven strong innings giving up two runs and five hits while striking out four batters. Tom Sawyer led the way offensively with three RBI in the contest.

Friday marks the first of six-night games on the Door County Baseball League schedule excluding the All-Star game at Joannes Park in Green Bay. Tim Kowols and Reece Robillard will have the call from Institute beginning at 7:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 7:30 p.m. on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com. The GOAT will also be broadcasting Sunday's game at Kolberg when the Braves host Baileys Harbor.

Rockers top Jackrabbits in extra innings

The Green Bay Rockers needed an extra frame with an extra run to beat the visiting Kokomo Jackrabbits 4-3 at home Thursday night.

The Rockers jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first inning when they earned two bases-loaded walks. The Jackrabbits would tie the game in the fourth and take the lead in the tenth before the Rockers plated another pair in their half of the extra inning when Carlos Hernandez registered a run-scoring single and later scored on an error by the first baseman.

Jayson Jones registered the lone multi-hit game for the Rockers, but the team earned nine walks on the night to lead them to victory. The pitching staff struck out 12 Jackrabbits, including two by the winning pitcher Tyler Horvath in relief.

Loons Edge Rattlers 3-2

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had a big inning brewing in the first inning on Thursday night at Dow Diamond, but only managed to score one run.  It would cost them as the Great Lakes Loons came up with the key hits when they needed them to record a 3-2 win in game three of the series.

The Timber Rattlers (23-35) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first inning against Great Lakes starting pitcher Ronan Kopp.  Ben Metzinger drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run.  Kopp struck out the next two batters before leaving with 32 pitches on his arm.  Mitchell Tyranski got a strikeout to end the threat.

Great Lakes (41-18) scored twice in the bottom of the first inning.  Back-to-back singles put runners on the corners with no outs.  Luís García tied the game with a sacrifice fly.  The Loons took the lead on a two-out, infield single by Ismael Alcantara to knock in a runner from third.

Wisconsin rallied to tie the game in the top of the second inning.  Matt Wood drove in the tying run with a single.  The Rattlers loaded the bases again in this inning but left all three runners stranded.

Damon Keith blooped in a double just fair to right with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning to score the go-ahead run for the Loons.

Jerming Rosario, the third Great Lakes pitcher of the game, shut down the Timber Rattlers for five innings from the third through the seventh inning.  He walked one and struck out eight without allowing a hit or a run as he turned that 3-2 lead over to his bullpen for the top of the eighth.

Jack Dreyer pitched a perfect top of the eighth with two strikeouts for the Loons.

In the top of the ninth, Boneny Robles got the first two outs before Jose Acosta lined a single to left to put the tying run on base.  That hit by Acosta was Wisconsin’s sixth hit of the game, but their first since Wood’s RBI single in the second inning.  Robles closed out the game with a flyout to center.

Wood went 2-for-4 as he extended his hitting streak to eleven games, the longest hitting streak by a Rattler this season.

The Rattlers are now 2-12 in games decided by one run this season.

Game four of the series is Friday night at Dow Diamond.  Stiven Cruz (2-5, 6.91) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Maddux Bruns (0-1, 3.60) is set to start for the Loons.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

Glory takes loss indoors vs. Minnesota

Canadian wildfires stopped the match from being held outdoors but could not stop the Green Bay Glory from falling to Minnesota Aurora 5-0 Wednesday night.

Poor air quality forced Minnesota Aurora to move the match from its outdoor, fan-supported TCO Stadium to a sterile St. Croix Valley Recreation Center, but the sadness was short-lived as they scored 75 seconds after the opening whistle and three goals before the 30-minute mark. Minnesota Aurora would score again in the 47th before drilling a penalty kick into the back of the net in the 75th minute. Hannah Adler, Cat Rapp, Kylie Olsen, and Sophie French all scored for Minnesota Aurora with Rapp leading the way with two goals.

The Glory return to action on Friday at Chicago City before hosting the Chicago Dutch Lions on Father's Day at Capital Credit Union Park.

Brewers' skid extends to off day

The Milwaukee Brewers will have a day off to reflect after they were swept out of Minnesota on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Twins 4-2.

The Brewers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to solo shots by Brian Anderson and Luis Urias. That represented two of their six hits and seven baserunners in the game, however as the Brewers could not get anything going offensively after that frame. The Twins meanwhile responded with a four-run rally in the fourth inning, kickstarted by a two-run game-tying triple by Carlos Correa and capped off by a run-scoring fielders' choice. Colin Rea took the loss, allowing all four runs while walking four and striking out three.

The Brewers will play next on Friday when they welcome the first-place Pittsburgh Pirates to American Family Field for Father's Day.

Loons Take Game Two with Two Unearned Runs

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers made a costly mistake and missed a huge scoring opportunity of their own against the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond on Wednesday night.  A two-out error extended the bottom of the fifth inning and the team with the best record in High-A baseball got a big hit to go up 2-0 on their way to a 2-1 victory.

Starting pitcher Jacob Misiorowski struggled with his control in his second start for the Timber Rattlers.  He walked two, hit two, and racked up 70 pitches in three innings.  He allowed one hit, but the Loons stranded six runners in the first three innings thanks to three strikeouts.

Misiorowski would not return for the fourth, but Great Lakes (40-18) kept the pressure on reliever Max Lazar, who had to work through a jam of his own and stranded runners at second and third with a strikeout to end the inning.

Lazar gave up a hit on the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth inning before getting the next batter to ground into a 4-6-3 double play on the second pitch.  However, a double, an error, and a stolen base put two more runners in scoring position for the Loons.  This time, Great Lakes cashed in on a single up the middle by Ismael Alcantara to score both runs.

Loons’ starter Justin Wrobleski struck out ten over five scoreless innings and allowed just two hits.  He would leave the game up to the Loons bullpen.  The Rattlers offense would make them work to keep the lead right away.

Robert Moore hit a lead-off homer in the top of the sixth off Michael Hobbs.  Moore has homered in two straight games with this one pulling Wisconsin (23-34) to within 2-1.

Hobbs would give up a single to Matt Wood before walking Joe Gray Jr and Darrien Miller to load the bases with no outs.  The Rattlers couldn’t convert as Aldry Alcantara relieved Hobbs and retired the next three hitters with a popup and back-to-back strikeouts.  Wisconsin would not get another chance.

Alcantara pitched a perfect seventh, Christian Suarez worked around a two-out hit batsmen, and Juan Morillo was perfect with two strikeouts in the ninth for the save.

Five Loons pitchers combined to strike out seventeen in the game.

Wood extended his hitting streak to ten games with his single in the sixth inning.  He became the first Rattler hitter to reach double digits for a hitting streak this season.

The series is even at 1-1 through the first two games.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at Dow Diamond.  Cameron Wagoner (1-7, 7.93) is scheduled to start for the Timber Rattlers.  Great Lakes has named Ronan Kopp (0-2, 2.12) as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

Brewers blow lead late to Twins for fifth straight loss

The losses don’t get much tougher, as the Milwaukee Brewers opened a two-game series on the road against the Minnesota Twins with a crushing 7-5 loss in Minneapolis.  The Brewers, losers of five straight games, took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning only to see closer Devin Williams give up four runs on two home runs without retiring a single Twin batter.  Carlos Correa crushed a two-run, walk-off home run to seal the Brewers' fate in the ninth.

The Brewers jumped out to a 3-0 lead early, thanks to a three-hit, four-RBI night by Christian Yelich, but it was all for not.

Williams, who has been near-perfect all season, was greeted by a solo home run by Michael A. Taylor to lead off the ninth.  After walking the next batter, Donovan Solana singled home the tying run, leading up to Correa’s dramatic walk-off home run.

Brewer starter Corbin Burnes pitched six innings allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out eight and walking only one.

The Brewers (34-33) will look to split the series later today against Minnesota (34-33) before returning home for a series against division foe Pittsburgh.

Rattlers open series with 8-5 win over Great Lakes

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers built a 7-1 lead and held on for an 8-5 victory over the Great Lakes Loons Tuesday afternoon at Dow Diamond.  Darrien Miller and Robert Moore homered for the Rattlers offense.  The Wisconsin bullpen buckled, but it didn’t break as the Loons were 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position and stranded eleven runners.

Miller hit a lead-off home run in the top of the second inning to put the Rattlers (23-33) up 1-0.  The homer was his third of the season and first since May 5.

Wisconsin extended their lead in the third inning.  Ernesto Martinez singled to start the frame, but he was still at first base with two outs.  Matt Wood knocked in Martinez with a two-out double for the 2-0 lead.  Wood also extended his hitting streak to nine games, the longest hitting streak on the team this season.

Joe Gray Jr was next, and he singled to put runners on the corners.  With Miller at the plate, Gray broke early for second base.  Loons starting pitcher Hyun-il Choi whirled to catch Gray but was called for a balk to allow Wood to score Wisconsin’s third run.

Great Lakes (39-18) got on the board in the top of the third inning,  Frank Rodriguez hit a long, lead-off home run to left.

The Loons, who clinched the First Half Eastern Division, had chances in the fourth and fifth innings to draw close as they had a runner at third with no outs in both innings.  In the fourth, Wisconsin starter Edwin Jimenez escaped the game with back-to-back strikeouts and a flyout to center.  Jimenez worked four innings, allowed one run, and struck out six while walking one.  He left with 81 pitches under his belt through his four innings of work.

In the fifth, Ryan Brady faced the same situation and left the runner stranded on a grounder to third, a lineout to second, and a grounder to first.

The Timber Rattlers offense got a pair of big two-out hits in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead.  Eduarqui Fernández beat out an infield single with runners on second and third to score the first run of the sixth.  Moore followed with a three-run home run to right-center and the Rattlers were up 7-1.

Brady pitched two more scoreless innings to maintain the lead.  He allowed three hits, walked none, and struck out four.

The Wisconsin bullpen faltered a little in the bottom of the eighth as the Loons scored two runs on a hit batsman, three walks, a wild pitch, and two passed balls to pull within 7-3.

Je’Von Ward got one of those runs back for Wisconsin with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth.

Great Lakes made it interesting in their half of the ninth as a two-run double by Griffin Lockwood-Powell with one out pulled them within 8-5 and put the tying run on deck.  Brannon Jordan, Wisconsin’s fifth pitcher of the game, entered from the bullpen to and shutdown the drama by getting the final two outs for his second save of the season.

Wisconsin is 5-1 on the first six-games of their two-week trip to Michigan.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at Dow Diamond.  Jacob Misiorowski (1-0, 0.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  The Loons have Justin Wrobleski (2-2, 3.33) set to go for them.  Misiorowski is the #4 prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers system.  Wrobleski is rated as the #29 prospect in the Los Angeles Dodgers system.  Game time is 6:05 pm

Thomas resigns as Gibraltar girls basketball coach

Gibraltar will have to look for a new girls basketball coach after the school board accepted Devin Thomas' resignation during their meeting on Monday.

In his letter penned to the team's families and the school board, Thomas said it became apparent that there was a growing unrest among community members in the direction the program was going. He admits that he could contend with some of the accusations being thrown his way, but that would not be to the benefit of the team and the program. " Leading the program is a difficult task and one that I valued and was proud of. I hope that whomever the school determines is best suited to take on this task realizes how special these athletes are. They are the ones that make this program incredibly special. Building relationships with them, who are some of the best people that Gibraltar High School and its surrounding community has to offer has truly been one of the best parts of my life over the last decade," wrote Thomas. He hopes parents work with the future coach to voice their concerns directly.

Thomas went 14-10 in his first season in 2019-2020 at the helm after he replaced Josh Kropuenske. The team never was able to find its footing after being forced to play an abbreviated 2020-2021 due to pandemic protocols, going 9-45 his final three years.

Local athletes prepare for All-Star games

Even though the high school sports seasons are over for all eight schools in Door and Kewaunee counties, that does not mean there are not opportunities for some of those students to wear their colors one last time.

The state's different sports organizations traditionally hold all-star games during June and July to feature area seniors one last time. The events become big fundraisers for local causes such as Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Below you can find some of the athletes playing in their respective all-star contests.

Gamblers announce 2023/2024 schedule

The Green Bay Gamblers will return to a cross-conference schedule for the first time since before the pandemic according to the schedule they released late last week.

The switch in the schedule means trips to Des Moines, Fargo, Waterloo, Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Tri-City, Omaha, and Lincoln are back on the schedule. Off the schedule is the Gamblers' traditional game on New Year's Eve with a home Packers game to blame. They did keep their other traditional fixture on Thanksgiving, which will be played at the Resch Center against Madison.

The home opener is scheduled for October 7th against Dubuque. The Gamblers play five of their first six games on the road.

Rockers rout 'Chucks

The Green Bay Rockers scored in each of the first six innings en route to an 8-2 win over the Wausau Woodchucks on Monday night.

Max Mims, Cooper Kelly, and Carlos Hernandez all had two RBI in the win, going a combined 4-9 from the plate. Kelly delivered the game's big blow when he sent a home run over the fence for his two RBI.

Jackson Murphy picked up the win for the Rockers, allowing just one run across five innings. His main reliever, Jacob Faulkner, recorded six strikeouts in his three innings of work.

The Rockers and Woodchucks meet again Tuesday, but this time it will be at Athletic Park in Wausau.

L-C trap, fishing take state titles

By land and by water, Luxemburg-Casco High School won a pair of state championships over the weekend.

In Nekoosa, Wis., the Spartans Trap Team won the first state title with Cole Anderson (95), Ethan Buresh (94), Jacob DeGrave (99), Kyle Kratz (93), Mitchel DeGreve (94), Charlie Simonar (90), Garrett Simonar (98), Jayden Stein (96),  and Trey Vincent (92) all scoring at least 90 points across their two sessions.

Charlie and Garrett Simonar were named All-State for the 2023 Spring League.  In addition, Presley Zabel (JV) and Marissa Falish (Novice) captured individual crowns in the ladies' divisions.

Out on the water near LaCrosse, the Spartans will send two teams to the national competition after taking the top two spots in the state competition. The state champions were Riley Richard and Jacob Treml, captained by coach Brian Eisch. The runner-ups were Isaac Jerabek and John Hanmann Jr., captained by coach Jesse Jerabek.

Glory upend Rochester FC

The Green Bay Glory got back into the win column in grand fashion Sunday evening at the Banta Bowl in Appleton, beating Rochester FC.

The Glory took a 2-0 lead into halftime thanks to tallies by Brenna Musser (5th minute) and Rachel Janes (19th minute). Rochester FC would start quick, scoring off a series of deflections to make it 2-1. Skylar Prentice stretched the lead out to two once again when she scored in the 71st minute.

Rockers catch Kingfish

The Green Bay Rockers used a five-run fifth inning to even their record at 7-7 with a 6-2 win over the Kenosha Kingfish Sunday afternoon.

Max Mims delivered the game's biggest blow for the Rockers as he knocked in two runs with an RBI triple. Kyle West, Luke Moeller, George Wolkow, and Cooper Kelly also knocked in runs for the Rockers.

The Rockers used five pitchers to earn the win with Cooper Dossett picking up the victory with two walks, and four strikeouts, but no runs given up in three innings of relief.

The Rockers are back in action on Monday at Capital Credit Union Park at 6:35 p.m. when they face the Wausau Woodchucks.

Bays outpower Indians on chilly Sunday on 105.1 The GOAT

The offense of Sister Bay came out firing early in the first two innings as they pushed their way to another win as they defeated the Egg Harbor Indians 9-2 on Sunday afternoon.

The Bays started their offense right away in the bottom of the first inning as Tom Sawyer and Griffin Cole hit back to back doubles to have a combined three RBIs in the inning. Egg Harbor would respond right back in the top of the second after Brady Kita doubled off the wall and was scored by Cole Krause on an infield single.

Sister Bay would add on three more in the second to give themselves a 6-1 lead with Tom Sawyer having half of the RBIs for the Bays through the first two innings.

The scoring would stop until Anthony Jennerjohn hit a solo home run into left field to give the Indians their second and final run of the day.

Sam Forkert was automatic on the mound for Sister Bay, going seven strong innings giving up two runs and five hits while striking out four batters.

Sister Bay piled on more insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings, finishing the game at 9-2 and keeping the Bays at the top of the DCBL standings at 4-1 overall.

Other Door County Baseball League Games:

West Jacksonport 22 Baileys Harbor 12 - Ports had four home runs on the day and improved to 4-1 overall while Baileys Harbor fell to 1-4.

Kolberg 5 Washington Island 0

Maplewood 20 Institute 3: The Mets scored 15 runs in the fifth inning to give them the victory in eight innings. Adam Gutschow and Kordell Draves each drove in four runs while Nolan Wagner also collected two RBI. Ethan Kroll and Brent Haberli drove in two of the three runs for the Cubs while Elijah Reimer took the brunt of the damage against the Mets, giving up 13 runs in his two-thirds of an inning pitched.

The NEW Radio Sports Network and 105.1 The GOAT will feature two games this week when Institute plays the first night game of the season on Friday against Sister Bay and Baileys Harbor visits on Kolberg.

Clutch Hits Lift Wisconsin Past West Michigan

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got an excellent performance from starting pitcher Tyler Woessner but needed two clutch doubles from Alex Hall and Eduardo García in the top of the eighth inning to claim a 4-1 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps Saturday night at LMCU Ballpark.

The Timber Rattlers (22-33) took the lead in the top of the second on an RBI single by Terence Doston to score Je’Von Ward.

West Michigan (29-27) had their first threat against Woessner in the bottom of the fifth.  The first two batters reached on singles.  Woessner escaped with a 3-6-3 double play and a strikeout to keep the Rattlers in front.

Woessner worked a perfect sixth and went back out for the seventh to become the first Wisconsin starting pitcher to pitch into the seventh inning this season.  He got the first out but left after walking Justice Bigbie.

Luis Amaya took over for Woessner and threw a wild pitch on his first offering to Chris Meyers to allow Bigbie to take second base.  Later in the at bat, Meyers lined a double to right-center on a 3-2 pitch to tie the game.  Amaya retired the next two batters to end the inning with the score 1-1.

The run gave Woessner a no decision, and denied him his sixth win of the season, but it was a terrific outing for the right-hander.  Woessner allowed one run on three hits with eight strikeouts over his 6-1/3 innings for his longest outing as a pro.  He also lowered his ERA for the season to 2.38.

Wisconsin’s offense got the lead back in the top of the eighth on a pair of clutch doubles.  Matt Wood started the rally with a one-out single off the first base bag to extend his hitting streak to eight games.  Joe Gray Jr was hit by a pitch.  Then, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position.

Hall ripped a double into the corner in right with two outs to score both runners and the Rattlers had a 3-1 advantage.  Eduardo García followed with a double to the corner in left and Hall scored an insurance run.

Amaya didn’t need an insurance run.  He worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning before walking the lead-off batter in the bottom of the ninth.  Amaya retired the next three batters, including Meyers on a flyout to left to end the game.

The win clinched Wisconsin’s second straight series win.  This marks the first road series victory of the season for the Timber Rattlers.

The series finale is Sunday afternoon at LMCU Ballpark.  Edwin Jimenez (2-1, 2.15) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Garrett Burhenn (2-2, 3.57) is set to start for the Whitecaps.  Game time is 1:00pm CDT.

Blizzard pull out win in home finale

In their last regular season home game, the Green Bay Blizzard were able to take down the Quad City Steamwheelers 45-38.

The Blizzard had command of the lead for most of the game, and even were ahead by 26 at one point as they led Quad City 42-16 after three quarters. Quarterback Max Meylor and running back Terrance Smith were the main scorers for the Blizzard early, who looked to be in a comfortable spot heading into the last quarter.

However, Quad City would steamroll their way back into the game with two unanswered touchdowns to cut the lead down to ten at 42-32. Green Bay would answer back with a field goal and put the game on ice as the Steamwheelers tagged on another touchdown but still fell by seven.

The two teams will match up again in Moline Illinois on Saturday, July 8th. Green Bay will have one game to play before then as they face off against the Sioux Falls Storm in Sioux Falls next Friday.

Brewers fall to lowly A's in extras

The Milwaukee Brewers could not find much offense on Saturday afternoon as they fell to the Oakland Athletics 2-1 in 10 innings.

Julio Teheran had another great start for the Brewers this season, as he remains one of the better options in the rotation for Milwaukee. Teheran went seven full innings with just six hits and six strikeouts, putting the team within striking distance throughout the game.

Milwaukee's offense could not back up the strong game from their starter as they mustered just six hits and one run, which was a solo home run from catcher William Contreras in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Going into extras, Aledmys Diaz singled in the ghost runner on second to make the lead 2-1 for Oakland. The A's would then bring in a left handed pitcher out of their bullpen, which has been the Brewers demise the entire season. Milwaukee would go down in order to end the game, finishing 0-6 with runners in scoring position.

The Crew will look to avoid being swept by the team with the worst record in the league on Sunday when they have Freddy Peralta on the mound against lefty JP Sears.

Sister Bay battles Egg Harbor in week five on 105.1 The GOAT

Looking to break a four way tie at the top of the Door County Baseball League Standings are the Sister Bay Bays, as they host Egg Harbor for a week five matchup in Sister Bay.

The Bays find themselves at 3-1 after the four weeks and are tied with Kolberg, Washington Island, and West Jacksonport. Sister Bay routed Baileys Harbor 16-1 last week after the A’s won their first game in a few seasons. The Bays have been led by their stout pitching in Sam Forkert and Matt Hecht, who have led Sister Bay to some low scoring games. Tom Sawyer has been a strong bat for the team throughout the first part of the season, and has also been a wall behind the plate. Look for the Bays to try and break that tie atop the DCBL standings.

Standing in their way are the Egg Harbor Indians, who have already defeated a team at the top of the standings this season in the defending champions, Kolberg. Egg Harbor narrowly fell to the Washington Island Islanders last week, 7-5. Look for the Indians offense to be a driving force in this game as they look to get over .500 and improve their record to 3-2.

Gary Barta and Paul Schmitt will be on the call from Sister Bay on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com starting at 1:15 p.m. with the pregame show and first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. between the Bays and the Indians.

Other games around the DCBL include Kolberg traveling to Washington Island, West Jacksonport hosting Baileys Harbor, and Institute visiting Maplewood.

Whitecaps End Wisconsin Winning Streak

Jace Jung went 3-for-5 with a double and a pair of home runs to lead the West Michigan Whitecaps to an 8-6 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Friday night at LMCU Ballpark.  Wisconsin rallied from an early 5-1 deficit with five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead.  However, Jung’s second homer gave West Michigan a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the fourth, a lead they would never surrender.

The Whitecaps (29-26) jumped on Wisconsin starting pitcher Stiven Cruz with four straight hits to start the bottom of the first inning.  Danny Serretti and Jace Jung had back-to-back doubles for a 1-0 lead.  Justice Bigbie singled to put runners on the corners.  Chris Meyers concluded the onslaught with a three-run home run to right-center for the 4-0 advantage.

Wisconsin (21-33) scored in the top of the second inning against Tarik Skubal, a Detroit Tigers pitcher on a rehabilitation assignment.  Ernesto Martinez Jr had an RBI single.

Jung struck again in the bottom of the second with a two-out, solo home run to put West Michigan back up by four runs.

Skubal left after three innings.  He allowed an unearned run on two hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

The Timber Rattlers took advantage of Skubal’s exit as they scored five runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead.

Eduardo García drew a walk and Eduarqui Fernández singled to start the inning and put runners on the corners.  The duo pulled a double steal with Fernández drawing the throw with his steal of second and García scoring easily without a throw.

Then, the Rattlers strung together four straight singles with one out with Jose Acosta and Matt Wood’s singles scoring runs to pull the Rattlers to tie the game 5-5.

Joe Gray Jr gave Wisconsin a 6-5 lead with a sacrifice fly.

The lead lasted three pitches into the bottom of the fourth.  Serretti hit a home run to right on a 2-0 pitch from starter Stiven Cruz.  Jung was next, and he cracked another 2-0 pitch for a home run that put the Whitecaps up 7-6.

Cruz got the first out of the inning before turning the game over to reliever Taylor Floyd.

Floyd kept the Rattlers in the game as he pitched 3-2/3 perfect innings of relief with six strikeouts to keep the Rattlers within a run.

Wisconsin’s best chance to get the game back to even happened in the sixth inning.  Terence Doston, who had two hits and was on base three times as the number nine hitter in the order, started the sixth with a bunt single.  Then, Robert Moore drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to put two runners on base against Gabe Sequeira.  However, Sequeira got out of the inning with a strikeout and a 1-4-3 double play.

West Michigan added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.  Izaac Pacheco doubled to start the inning.  Dillon Paulsen drove in Pacheco with a single for the 8-6 lead.  Jordan Marks, West Michigan’s sixth pitcher of the night, worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth for a save.

Wisconsin had ten hits in the game.  All the hits were singles.  The Whitecaps had twelve hits in the game.  They had five singles, four homers, and three doubles.

Fernández went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base to lead Wisconsin’s offense.

The loss ended the Rattlers winning streak at three games.  Wisconsin has had four three-game winning streaks this season, but they have not been able to get to a four-game winning streak yet.

Game five of the series is Saturday night at LMCU Ballpark.  Tyler Woessner (5-1, 2.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  West Michigan has named Carlos Pena (0-4, 4.01) as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

Algoma honors "Scoop" with support

Boosters of the Algoma athletic programs and the community as a whole came out to support the man that has been giving them a voice for decades.

On Thursday, the Algoma FFA Alumni held a meat raffle and silent auction to support the needs of Lee Lawrenz, who has struggled in recent months to keep up with medical bills and needed repairs to his vehicle. Lawrenz, a Wolves alum himself, has extensively covered Algoma athletics for decades, starting when he joined the staff of the Algoma Record-Herald in 1977. Even in retirement, he continues to write updates online following many Algoma events, whether he was able to attend himself or had to follow along on the radio. Lawrenz was recognized by the school in January for his contributions to the school.

For those who did not make the event but still want to Lawrenz, you can mail a donation directly to Lee at 1409 6th Street, Apt. 18, Algoma, WI 54201.

Blizzard prepare for home finale

The Green Bay Blizzard look to end their 2023 Resch Center residency on a happy note when they host the Quad City Steam Rollers Friday night at 7:05 p.m.

The 5-5 Blizzard look to avenge a loss to the 7-3 Steam Rollers from just a couple weeks ago when they fell in a tight 63-56 game. The Blizzard are coming off an impressive 43-17 win over Iowa last week that saw RB Terrence Smith rush for three touchdowns and QB Max Meylor pass and run for additional scores. The Blizzard will end the season with an off week and four straight road games with an outside chance to make the IFL Playoffs.

Brewers fall late to Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles scored all six of their runs after the seventh inning as they took the series finale from the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3.

Rowdy Tellez, Owen Miller, and Jon Singleton kept the train moving in the first inning with RBI knocks to make it 3-0. The Orioles settled in after that and the Brewers' Colin Rea and two relievers kept mowing down batters until the seventh inning when Ramon Urias homered. Peter Strzelecki struggled in his frame, allowing three runs on an RBI double by Anthony Santander and a game-deciding homer by Gunnar Henderson. The bullpen would give up two more in the top of the ninth inning, but it did not matter as the Brewers were held to just two base runners in the final four innings. Strzelecki took the loss for the Brewers while Orioles reliever Keegan Akin got the win in relief.

The Brewers will now welcome MLB's bottom-dwelling Oakland A's to American Family Field for a 7:10 p.m. first pitch.

Badgers football sort out B1G Schedules

With UCLA and USC entering the fold in 2024, the Wisconsin Badgers and the rest of the Big 10 know a little more about how their schedule will look in 2024 and 2025.

Each team will have one or two protected rivalries that they will play every year. They also know who they will be playing back-to-back years in 2024 and 2025. For the Badgers, two of their trophy games, Iowa and Minnesota, are considered to be protected rivals. The Badgers will also play USC each of the next two years, including at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 2024. You can see the full breakdown below:

Misiorowski Dazzles in Timber Rattlers Debut

Jacob Misiorowski made the most of his first appearance as a Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.  The #4 prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers minor league system retired the first twelve West Michigan Whitecaps he faced and allowed just an unearned run over 5-1/3 innings with seven strikeouts to pick up a win in Wisconsin’s 4-1 victory over the Caps on Thursday night at LMCU Ballpark.

Misiorowski announced his presence with authority in the first inning with two strikeouts, including getting Jace Jung, the #2 prospect in the Detroit Tigers system, to swing and miss at a 101-mph pitch for strike three to end the inning.

West Michigan (28-26) didn’t get their first hit until Roberto Campos started the fifth inning with a single.  He was quickly erased on a double play.  Misiorowski hit the next batter before striking out Austin Murr to end the inning and record his seventh strikeout of the game.

The Timber Rattlers offense had trouble getting started against two Whitecaps pitchers as they had just two hits through five innings.

Wisconsin (21-32) broke the seal on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning.  Robert Moore worked an eleven-pitch plate appearance to coax a walk with one out.  Matt Wood followed with a single, his second hit of the game.  Joe Gray Jr was next.  He doubled down the third base line.

Moore scored on the play, but Wood was thrown out at the plate.  Gray was trying to take third on the throw home and catcher Josh Crouch tried to get him after the tag on Wood.  The throw from Crouch sailed into left and Gray trotted home with the run to make it 2-0.

Misiorowski issued a lead-off walk in the bottom of the sixth.  He got the first out on a fly out to right.  Izaac Pacheco sent a grounder wide of the bag at first.  Alex Hall ranged off the bag to field the ball but threw wildly to second and the Whitecaps had runners at the corners.  That was the end of the night for Misiorowski.  He finished the night with 76 pitches and 49 of those were for strikes.

Max Lazar entered the game out of the Wisconsin bullpen and gave up an RBI single to Justice Bigbie before getting the final two outs in the inning to keep the Rattlers up 2-1.

The Rattlers delivered a pair of two-out, RBI singles in the top of the seventh to grab some insurance.  Hall had the first.  Moore singled to score Hall a few batters later for the 4-1 lead.

Lazar returned to the mound and allowed just one hit over the final three innings to close out the game for his second save of the season.

The win was the third straight for the Timber Rattlers.  Wisconsin has won ten of their last fifteen games.

The Whitecaps were the best hitting team in the Midwest League with a team batting average of .256 and a team OPS of .757.  Misiorowski and Lazar held West Michigan to three hits, all singles.

Game four of the series is Friday night at LMCU Ballpark.  Stiven Cruz (2-4, 5.90) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  West Michigan is going with Tarik Skubal, who will be making a rehabilitation start working his way back to the Detroit Tigers.  Game time is 5:35pm CDT.

Glory drops second straight match

The Green Bay Glory scored an early goal but they could not hold on as they lost to Chicago City at home Wednesday night 2-1.

Carolina Gomes got the Glory on the board first in the 18th minute to take the lead against Chicago City. The Lionesses would get the tally back in the 29th minute as Xcaret Pineda banged it home. They would strike again when Daliisha Spence benefited from a series of deflections that led to the ball rolling in while goalkeeper Mallory Kehrin injured her knee on the play as she tried to change directions to make the save.

The Glory will try to get back into the win column on June 11th for a 6 p.m. Kickoff at the Banta Bowl on the campus of Lawrence University when they battle Rochester FC.

Brewers get Adames back in blasting of O's

Willy Adames returned to the line-up and Joey Wiemer led the charge for the Milwaukee Brewers as they beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-2 on the road.

The mulleted Wiemer went 4-4 with five RBI out of the nine spot thanks to home runs in the third and the seventh inning. Adames, fresh off a the injured list and a rehab stint with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, homered as well to end his evening 2-5 with the single RBI.

Corbin Burnes went eight innings, striking out nine and allowing no runs.

The Brewers wrap up their series against the Orioles on Thursday at 1:10 p.m.

Rattlers Comeback Breaks Whitecaps

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers took a while to get going offensively on Wednesday night against the West Michigan Whitecaps at LMCU Ballpark.  However, once the bats started rolling, there was no stopping Wisconsin in their 9-4 win.

The Whitecaps (28-25) took the lead with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning.  Izaac Pacheco doubled to drive in the first run of the inning.  Justice Bigbie followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0.

Wisconsin centerfielder Joe Gray Jr kept West Michigan from adding to their lead.  The Whitecaps had runners on first and second with two outs when Chris Meyers hit a ball deep to the gap in right-center.  Gray made a diving, tumbling catch and held on for the final out of the inning.

Through five innings, Wisconsin had had just two base runners – Alex Hall on a walk with one out in the third and Je’Von Ward on a two-out double in the fifth.  Both runners reached against Troy Melton, who worked four innings as a reliever after Beau Brieske had started the game and worked a 1-2-3 first with two strikeouts on an MLB rehab from the Detroit Tigers.

The Timber Rattlers bats came alive in the top of the sixth inning against Chance Kirby, the third West Michigan pitcher of the night.  Matt Wood singled with Robert Moore at first base.  A wild pitch moved both runners up a base.  A two-out wild pitch allowed Moore to score Wisconsin’s first run and send Wood to third.  Then, Darrien Miller doubled to right-center to score Wood.  Ben Metzinger followed with a double to the corner in right on a 3-2 pitch to send Miller home with the tying run.

Metzinger has driven in at least one run in his last four games for the Rattlers.

West Michigan retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth.  Chris Meyers doubled, and Roberto Campos singled with one out to put runners on the corners against Wisconsin reliever Sam Gardner, who was making his Timber Rattlers debut.  Danny Serretti put the Whitecaps in front with a sacrifice fly.

The Rattlers (20-32) rallied again with two outs in the top of the seventh.  Ward singled, and Alex Hall walked to start the inning, but they were both still at first and second with two outs.  West Michigan brought lefty Gabe Sequeira out of the bullpen to face Wood, who foiled the strategy with a single to center to get Ward home with the tying run.

Sequeira committed a balk to allow both Hall and Wood into scoring position.  Then, Serretti put the Rattlers in front when he threw wildly to first on a grounder to short off the bat of Gray.  A play that should have ended the inning allowed two runs to score and the Rattlers were up 6-4.

Metzinger started Wisconsin’s rally in the eighth inning with a double.  Eduardo García laced a single to right to score Metzinger and a misplay by Brady Allen allowed García to take third base.  Ward, who went 3-for-4 on the night, followed with an RBI double.  One out later, Eduarqui Fernández capped the inning with an RBI single to put the Rattlers up 9-4.

Wisconsin hitters went 6-for-14 with runners in scoring position on Wednesday night.

Ryan Brady relieved Gardner to start the bottom of the seventh and closed out the game with three scoreless innings.

Gardner, who was signed from the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League on June 2, picked up his first win in affiliated ball.  Brady, a non-drafted free agent out of BYU after the 2022 draft, earned his first pro save.

West Michigan’s already slim playoff hopes in the East Division’s first half race took a big hit with their loss and Great Lakes 10-1 win over Lake County on Wednesday.  Great Lakes now leads both West Michigan and Dayton in the East by nine games with thirteen games remaining in the first half of the season.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at LMCU Ballpark.  Jacob Misiorowski, the #4 prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers system, will make his Timber Rattlers debut as the starting pitcher.  West Michigan has named Williander Moreno (3-0, 3.67) as their starter.  Game time is 5:35pm CDT.

Rockers fall short against Dock Spiders

The Green Bay Rockers took a 4-2 lead in the eighth inning but could not hold it in their I-41 Showdown against the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders, falling 5-4 at Fox Cities Stadium.

After falling behind 2-0, Kyle West and JoJo Jackson had RBI hits to tie it up in the third inning. Jackson would deliver again in the eighth inning with a two-run single to make 4-2. The wheels would fall off after that as the combination of hits and errors tied the game at the end of eight. Travis Strickler drew a bases loaded walk in the ninth to give the Dock Spiders the walk-off win.

The Rockers are back in action on Thursday when they welcome the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.

Timber Rattlers top West Michigan 4-2

Darrien Miller’s two-out, two-run single in the top of the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 4-2 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps on Tuesday night at LMCU Ballpark.  Miller drove in three of Wisconsin’s four runs and the bullpen overcame some drama in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory.

The Timber Rattlers (19-32) took a 2-0 lead and knocked West Michigan starting pitcher Garrett Burhenn out of the game in the first inning.  Robert Moore doubled, and Willy Adames walked to start the frame.  Matt Wood was next, and he singled to center to score Moore.  A walk to Joe Gray Jr loaded the bases.  Then, Miller drove in Adames with a sacrifice fly.  Burhenn got the second out on a force out at second, but he left the game with 31 pitches and the Whitecaps were into the bullpen.  Angel Reyes took over and got the final out of the frame.

West Michigan (28-24) threatened in their half of the first as Wisconsin starter Edwin Jimenez gave up a walk and a single to the first two hitters.  Jimenez found his footing and retired the next three batters to maintain the lead.

Chris Meyers got the Whitecaps on the scoreboard with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Myers has eight home runs this season.

Jimenez worked through the rest of the fourth with no damage and retired the first two batters in the bottom of the fifth.  Justice Bigbie kept the inning alive with a double on a 1-2 pitch.  Then, Jace Jung singled on an 0-2 pitch to score Bigbie with the tying run.

Wisconsin didn’t have a runner reach second base from the first through the seventh inning.  That changed in the eighth.

Moore bunted for a hit and took second on a throwing error with one out against reliever Dario Gardea.  Adames was at the plate when Gardea threw a wild pitch to let Moore take third.  Then, Gardea walked Adames and Moore to load the bases.  Gardea got the second out on a popup and was ahead of Miller 1-2.

Miller blooped a single to center to score both Moore and Adames for the Rattlers to reclaim the lead.

Luis Amaya worked a scoreless eighth inning to complete three shutout innings before turning the ball over to Justin King for the ninth.

King gave up a one out single before striking out the next batter for the second out.  He was 1-2 on Bigbie, who again kept the inning alive with a single to put runners on the corners with two outs and bring the winning run to the plate in the form of Jung.  However, King would not get a chance to face the #2 prospect of the Detroit Tigers.  The training and coaching staff went to check on King after Bigbie’s single and removed him from the game.

Karlos Morales was called into the situation and immediately fell behind Jung 3-0 when play resumed.  Morales got a called strike on the next two pitches to run the count full.  Jung swung and missed at the payoff pitch and Morales had preserved the win for Wisconsin.

Amaya allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out two for his second win of the season.  Morales picked up his second save of the year with his game-ending strikeout.

The loss dropped the Whitecaps to eight games behind the Great Lakes Loons in the East Division race with fourteen games left to play in the first half.  The Loons won their game tonight 2-1 over Lake County at home.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at LMCU Ballpark.  Cameron Wagoner (1-7, 8.27) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Game time is 5:35pm CDT.  The broadcast is on AM1280 WNAM starting with the Community Blood Center at 5:15pm.

Brewers beats Orioles with Wiemers' walk-off in 10 innings

The Milwaukee Brewers upended the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 in extra innings Tuesday night thanks to a clutch two-out hit by Joey Wiemer in the bottom of the 10th inning at American Family Field.

The Brewers took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning only to see Baltimore tie the game in the top of the second inning 2-2.

Brewer Starter Freddy Peralta settled down after that and pitched five innings allowing six hits and two runs while striking out nine without walking a batter.

Baltimore took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning on a solo home run by Ryan O’Hearn.  An RBI single by Brice Turang tied the game in the eighth inning at 3-3.

That set the stage for Wiemers’ line drive hit down the left field line that scored the winning run, making Peter Strzelecki (3-4) the winning pitcher after pitching a scoreless top of the tenth inning.

The Brewers (33-28) will face off with Baltimore again Wednesday starting at 6:40 p.m. in game two of the inter-league series.

Brewers shutout by Reds

Julio Tehran pitched great for the Milwaukee Brewers, but the Cincinnati Reds matched him and then some in a 2-0 win on Monday.

Solo homers by the Reds' Stuart Fairchild and Tyler Stephenson in the third and fourth innings were all Tehran would give up in his 6 1/3 innings of work, lowering his ERA to 1.56 despite going 1-2 in those three starts. Joey Wiemer led the way for the Brewers, registering two of the team's three hits.

The Brewers completed the rare Friday-Monday series winning three of four and will now spend the next six games at American Family Field, beginning Tuesday night at 6:40 p.m. against the Baltimore Orioles.

Packers set date for Family Night

An annual rite of summer for fans of the Green Bay Packers will return to Lambeau Field on August 5th.

Doors for the ticketed event will open at 5:30 p.m., with the team taking the field for warmups at 7 p.m. and the full-fledge practice beginning at 7:30. Fireworks will close the evening's proceedings.

Tickets will go on sale Thursday, June 29, at 10 a.m. for $10 with proceeds from ticket sales going to benefit local charities.

Bucks finalize coaching hire

The Milwaukee Bucks finally did what many have speculated for over a week and finalized their hire of Adrian Griffin as its new head coach.

ESPN broke the news on Memorial Day weekend that the Bucks had begun negotiating with Griffin on a multiyear contract.

Griffin had been one of Nick Nurse's top assistants on his Toronto Raptors staff before Nurse was shown the door during the season. He is no stranger to the NBA's Central division, having served on staffs with Scott Skiles and Tom Thibodeau with the Chicago Bulls, current Bulls coach Billy Donovan during his stint with Oklahoma City, and Nurse. Griffin also started his coaching career with the Bucks in 2008 after his nine-year playing career was over.

No contract details have been reported. Griffin will be formally introduced to the media by the team at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at a press conference.

Glory fall short against RKC Third Coast

The Green Bay Glory could not close the gap in the second half against their visitors as they lost to RKC Third Coast 2-1 Sunday night.

All the scoring occurred in the first half with Skylar Prentice scoring the lone goal for the Glory while Brandi Thomsen and Molly O'Regan registered the tallies for RKC Third Coast which is based in Racine, Wis.

The Glory return to action on Wednesday against Chicago City at Capital Credit Union Park with the kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.

Gamblers look for host families

That spare bedroom could house a future NHL star someday if you are willing to partner with the Green Bay Gamblers.

The Gamblers are in search of partner families for the 2023-2024 season. These families are vital to the success of the Gamblers organization as they give the players somewhere to live in between road trips for games across the Midwest from late September to early April. The Green Bay Press-Gazette recently profiled Tracy and Butch Ward, who are following one of their former housemates in the American Hockey League playoffs as John Leonard continues to chase a roster spot in the NHL.

You can contact the Green Bay Gamblers if you are interested.

Adames Homers and Doubles in Rehab Assignment for Wisconsin

Willy Adames homered for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium to give the fans something to remember.  However, the Peoria Chiefs won the game 6-5 in ten innings.

The Chiefs (23-28) took the lead in the second inning.  Ramon Mendoza singled with one out.  Luis Rodriguez doubled down the line in left with two outs and Mendoza scored just ahead of the throw to the plate.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Alexander Cornielle worked five innings and just gave up the one run.  He allowed three hits, walked none, and struck out four for a no decision.

Je’Von Ward got the Rattlers (18-32) back to even with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the third.  Ward lined a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left-center for his fourth home run of the season.

That homer was the only run allowed by Tink Hence, the Chiefs starting pitcher and one of the top pitching prospects in baseball.  Hence completed five innings for the first time in his professional career and was in line for his first pro win after the Peoria offense scored three times in the top of the sixth inning.

Osvaldo Tovalin doubled in the first run of the inning for his thirteenth RBI in sixteen games against the Timber Rattlers this season.  Rodriguez struck again with a two-out, two-run triple to give the Chiefs a 4-1 lead.

The first two Wisconsin hitters were retired by Zane Mills in the bottom of the sixth.  Then, Adames launched a 400-foot homer to left with an exit velocity of 105-mph.

That sparked the Rattlers to four more hits to tie the game.  Matt Wood and Joe Gray Jr singled to get on base.  Ben Metzinger and Eduardo García followed with RBI singles to even the score 4-4.  Ward was robbed of a potential RBI single on a diving play in the hole by second baseman Francisco Hernandez or the Rattlers would have gone ahead right there.

It would be Peoria to take the lead in the top of the seventh inning.  Victor Scott II had a lead-off triple.  Darlin Moquete drove in Scott with a sacrifice fly.

García tied the game again with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the eighth.  Metzinger had been hit by a pitch to get on base.  García drove a 3-2 pitch to right-center and Metzinger raced home with the tying run.

Both teams had chances in the ninth inning, but neither scored and the game went to the tenth.

Thomas Francisco singled with two outs in the top of the frame to score the go-ahead run.  The Rattlers could not score the placed runner at second in the bottom of the inning and the Chiefs held on for the win.

Wisconsin won the series 4-2, but the Chiefs hold a 10-8 edge in the season series.  The teams have three games remaining in the season series.

Adames went 2-for-4 in five plate appearances.  He flew out to left in the first, doubled in the fourth, was intentionally walked in the seventh, and flew out to right in the ninth to go along with his homer in the sixth inning.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday.  They begin a two-week road trip to Michigan on Tuesday with a game against the West Michigan Whitecaps.  Game time at LMCU Ballpark is 5:35pm CDT.

West Jacksonport rolls to 20-7 win over Maplewood on 105.1 The GOAT

The West Jacksonport Ports exploded for 13 runs in the seventh inning to overwhelm the Maplewood Mets 20-7 Sunday afternoon in Door County Baseball League action.

After a scoreless first two innings, The Ports (3-1) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, capped by a solo home run by Derek Niedzwiecki.  Maplewood responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Things started to go south for the Mets in the sixth inning when the Ports scored four runs on just three hits.  The seventh inning saw the Ports bat around the order twice coming up with 13 runs, including a three-run home run by Alex Scharter who finished the game with a team—high four RBIs.

Drew Tanck was the winning pitcher for the Ports, going six innings and allowing five runs on six hits while striking out seven.  Mets starting pitcher Jayden Diller took the loss going six innings plus allowing eight runs.

Maplewood falls to 1-3 in the league while the Ports remain in a tie for first place at 3-1.

In other action Sunday in Door County Baseball League play, Kolberg beat Institute 12-2, Washington Island topped Egg Harbor 7-5, and Sister Bay blew out Baileys Harbor 16-1.

Willy Adames to Rehab with Timber Rattlers on Sunday

The Milwaukee Brewers have announced Willy Adames will act as the designated hitter for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Sunday, June 4 as part of a rehabilitation assignment.  The Rattlers host the Peoria Chiefs at 12:10pm at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Adames was injured when a foul ball hit him in his head as he was leaning on the railing of the Milwaukee dugout during a game at American Family Field against the San Francisco Giants on May 26.  Adames has been working out with the Timber Rattlers prior to their games for the last few days.  He was cleared for the rehabilitation assignment earlier today.

The Milwaukee shortstop played for two different Midwest League teams in 2014 – the West Michigan Whitecaps and the Bowling Green Hot Rods – but he never played against the Timber Rattlers during that season.

State Track Round-Up: Algoma's Borths wins state title

There were plenty of great performances by local athletes at this year's WIAA State Track Meet in LaCrosse, but the best came from the wheelchair heats.

Algoma's Logan Borths came home with plenty of hardware on Saturday, but one of those pieces is the grandest of all. Borths won the state title in the wheelchair 100m, cruising to a time of 17.61. It was among his personal records set during the state meet, where he also medaled in the 1600m, 400m, and shotput. They will all pair well with the collection of medals he won at last year's state meet.

Sturgeon Bay's Espen Walker was the top finisher of any local athlete on the day, taking third place in the high jump with a leap of 6-02. Nida Zukauskaite did not advance to the Division 2 100m hurdles finals, coming in 16th place with a time of 17.48.

Gibraltar hurdler McKailey Reisen wanted another try at personal records this weekend and took advantage of the opportunity at the WIAA State Track Meet. Reisen ran a time of 15.72 in the 100m hurdles, which was good for breaking her school record and a fourth-place medal. She took 12th in the high jump, earning a height of 5-00.

Kewaunee's Hannah Miller finished just outside of the finals for the 400m, running a time of 1:01.89, which was good for 14th. She did reach the podium in the triple jump with a leap of 36-00. Maddix Mueller cleared 6-00 to finish in 14th. Jordan Lamack recorded no height. Kemper Robinson finished his season with a 14th place finish in discus, throwing a distance of 140-07.

George Herlache vaulted his way to a podium finish at the WIAA State Track Meet, finishing the weekend as Luxemburg-Casco's top performer. Herlache ended his weekend with a final height of 13-06, good for sixth place overall and just over 1.5 feet under the leader Preston Buroker of Viroqua, who set a state record in the process. The 4x400m relay ream featuring Lydia Morozov, Grace Seering, Elaina Holschuh, Madyson VanArk, and Eva Junion finished outside of the qualification window, coming in 15th with a time of 4:11.55.

Sevastopol's Danica Werkheiser ended her junior season with a 14th-place finish with a final height of 5-0. Kylie Duessler came in 16th place in the 200m preliminaries, finishing in a time of 27.95. Bea Dramm came in 14th place in the 1600m run with a time of 5:42.45.

Lemens named DPOY in NEC

The Luxemburg-Casco soccer team placed four on the All-NEC teams last week with the top honors going to its goalkeeper.

Tabi Lemens was named to the NEC first-team as a goalkeeper while also earning the conference's top honor for defensive players. The Spartans' promise is evident with its second-team selections with freshmen Alana Mrotek and Emi Kuhn earning spots. The league's coaches also did not forget the contributions of one of the Spartans' seniors, Sami Treml, earning an honorable mention.

Packerland Conference announces scholar athlete awards

With the school year around Door and Kewaunee county slowly winding down, the Packerland Conference has announced their annual Packerland Scholar Athlete Awards for the 2022-2023 season. The two different awards that were presented were the Packerland Outstanding Achievement award and the Scholar Athlete Award.

The Packerland Outstanding Achievement award is given to a three-sport athlete for their junior and senior years. The outstanding scholar must have earned a total of seven (7) athletic letters throughout their high school career. Packers to practice against two opponents during preseason

You will likely see less of the Green Bay Packers this summer for training camp because of a recent quirk added to the schedule.

Head Coach Matt LaFleur confirmed this week that the Packers will head out to Cincinnati a few days ahead of their August 11th game against the Bengals. It is the first time in recent years that the Packers have traveled ahead of a preseason game to participate in another team's training camp. They will continue the tradition of hosting a team in Green Bay before a preseason contest when the New England Patriots come to town before their exhibition tilt on August 19th.

The Packers have not confirmed the dates for their 2023 Training Camp, including the days when the practices will be open for public viewing. Titletown did list its traditional Family Fest on Saturday, August 5th, an indicator of when the Family Night Scrimmage will take place.

Wolves fall in heartbreaker against Thunderbirds on 104.1 WRLU

After getting Iola-Scandinavia down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Thunderbirds scored 3 unanswered to defeat the Wolves and  clinch a spot in Madison 3-2 on 104.1 WRLU.

The game started off with many opportunities for both teams, as in the first inning alone the Thunderbirds had a runner on third, and the Wolves had the bases loaded, but neither could result in a run. Macie Zimmerman had her top stuff Thursday afternoon on the mound, as she struck out eight Iola-Scandinavian batters throughout her seven innings pitched.

The Wolves would have another opportunity in the third inning, as Ryley and Macie Zimmerman were the runners on second and third base with just one out for the Wolves. A fly out to the third baseman and to the center fielder would end that threat for Algoma with the game tied 0-0.

The game would remain tied into the bottom of the sixth inning, where pitcher Macie Zimmerman for Algoma would hit a solo home run into left center field to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead headed into the final innings with the Wolves needing  just three outs to clinch a spot at Goodman Diamond.

After Zimmerman retired the first two pinch batters, the Wolves were one out away. The Thunderbirds would not let the Wolves record the 21st out without a say however, as back to back home runs from Jaeyln Sivertson and Maddie Much, who saw her home run be of the inside the park variety. Another run would give Iola-Scandinavia a 3-1 lead.

Algoma would add a run in the bottom half of the seventh, but the final out was recorded at second base and the Thunderbirds would become Sectional Champions and find themselves in the state tournament with a 3-2 over Algoma.

Algoma softball set for sectional final on 104.1 WRLU

After paving their road to the Sectional Final, the Algoma Wolves will look to finish what they started and punch their ticket to Madison when they face Iola-Scandinavia on Thursday.

Whether it was the blowout win over Stockbridge/Hilbert 11-0 that featured a no hitter from freshman Macie Zimmerman, or the walk off of St. Mary's Springs 8-7 that won them a regional title, the Algoma Wolves have survived and advanced in many different ways. It will only take one more win however to find themselves in Madison for the state tournament. Algoma has outscored their opponents 24-9 in their three games played in the playoffs, and will need more perfect play to beat Iola-Scandinavia. Deep in the postseason, pitching is what wins teams games, and the Wolves have rode on the shoulders of Macie Zimmerman.

Iola-Scandinavia has been a high scoring offense throughout the postseason as they have wins of 12-10, 8-2, and most recently 9-6 over top seeded Bonduel. The Thunderbirds are 20-9 overall and have won 10 games in the past 11 they have played. The Wolves of Algoma will not be placed with an easy task, but neither will the Thunderbirds as both teams battle it out for a spot in the final four competing at Goodman Diamond in Madison next week.

Gary Barta and Paul Schmitt will have the coverage from Crivitz High School on 104.1 WRLU and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 4:15 p.m. with the pregame show and 4:30 p.m. first pitch for the Division 4 Softball Sectional Final between the Algoma Wolves and the Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds.

Southern Door, Gibraltar falter in WIAA baseball regional finals on NRSN

Both Gibraltar and Southern Door were shut out in their attempts to qualify for Tuesday's sectional round as heard on the NEW Radio Sports Network on Wednesday afternoon.

As heard on 105.1 The GOAT, Gibraltar's Noah Greene was good, but Pacelli's Brock Birrenkott was better in the Cardinals' 2-0 regional title clincher over the Vikings Wednesday afternoon in Stevens Point.

The Southern Door offense went completely cold after Tuesday night's offensive eruption over Howards Grove, as the Eagles fell 3-0 to Kiel in the Regional Title game on U-102.1.
