The Panthers' campaign has gone in the other direction with a 2-0 mark, including a 40-point blowout of Little Chute in their last game. The Panthers have three players scoring in double figures: Maddy Maloney (15.0 ppg), Amber Otto (12.5 ppg), and Rylie Shallow (10.0 ppg).

Phoenix kick off UWM week with men's close loss to PFW

The Green Bay Phoenix have games against their in-state rival this week, but the men opened Horizon League play on Wednesday with a 75-71 loss to Purdue-Fort Wayne.

The Mastodons entered the game as one of the league's hottest teams from the field, scoring over 100 points twice in their seven games this season. The Phoenix defense did what it could, limiting the Mastodons to 45 percent from the field. The two teams rarely exchanged leads in the first half with the Mastodons as the Phoenix trailed at the half 36-32. The Phoenix offense started to click more in the second half, allowing them to take the lead from the Mastodons several times. They could never extend their advantage by just a few buckets, allowing the Mastodons to slip past them in the final minutes.

Noah Reynolds led the Phoenix with 16 points, while Clarence Cummings III scored 12 points in his season debut. Junior Elijah Moore added 11 points in the loss. The Phoenix men return home to the Resch Center for their tilt against UW-Milwaukee on Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Phoenix women only have to wait until tonight (Thursday) for their matchup against the Panthers. They are coming off a 2-1 visit south of the border at the Cancun Challenge, picking up their second win against a ranked opponent this season when they toppled Washington State on getaway day. The Panthers have rebounded after a 0-3 start, winning four straight games. Thursday's Horizon League opener marks the 100th meeting between the two squads. The Phoenix and Panthers will play each other at the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee at 7 p.m.

The Spartans ended the 2022-2023 season with a conference, regional, and team state title, in addition to winning other smaller tournaments along the way. The last we saw of the Spartans beat Evansville 63-9 in the state semifinal before winning the state championship with a 37-20 victory against Prairie du Chien. The Spartans also return several of their state qualifiers from a year ago, including second-place finishers Max Ronsman and Trace Schoenebeck. Even with an extended run for many of his wrestlers due to the football team's success, head coach Chas Treml was confident that his team would be ready for the grind of another season with expectations being held over them.

The Marines sent one wrestler to the state meet, with Kaylee Mcfadden taking third in the girls' competition. The team sent three wrestlers to last year's sectional, with Isaac Hermanson (23-16) taking fourth at 106 pounds as their top finisher. Jaxson Smith (182) and Logan Paris (195) also qualified.

The first match is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.

With several players returning to practice on Monday, two players were cut from the Green Bay Packers' roster.

There is a chance they could stick with the team on the practice squad. ESPN LaCrosse's Paul Bretl says the Packers have two practice squad openings and worked out six players on Monday, including three tight ends and two running backs. The Athletic's Matt Schneidman reported several Packers players returning to the practice field after missing last Thursday's game against the Lions:

Spartans girls look for first win vs. Red Raiders

The Luxemburg-Casco girls' basketball team will go for their first win in two tries on Monday night when they travel to Pulaski to take on the Red Raiders.

The Beth Budnik era began with Luxemburg-Casco falling to Marinette 43-35. The two teams kept things close in the first half, with the visiting Marines only holding an 18-16 at the break. Bryana Torkko was a thorn for the Spartans, scoring all eight of her points in the first half and joining Riley Kieffer and Chloe Seymour with the team lead. Brianna Bray and Erin Cherovsky carried the load for the Spartans in the first half, scoring seven points. The Marines would outscore the Spartans 25-19 in the second half thanks to six points from Madison Kuoazk, all of which came after the break. Cherovsky would end her night with 14 points as Bray added 13 in the loss for the Spartans.

The Red Raiders are starting their campaign slowly, losing three games in the season's opening two weeks. After losing by double figures to West De Pere, they dropped matchups to Seymour and New London by a combined seven points. Olivia Spranger is leading the Red Raiders attack with 11.5 points per game.

Tip-off is set for 7:15 p.m.

In other girls' basketball action, Algoma continues its murderer's row of season-opening games when it visits Mishicot for a 7:15 p.m.

Bucks make huge comeback vs. Trail Blazers

Damian Lillard had the last laugh against his old team on Sunday as the Milwaukee Bucks returned from 26 points down to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 108-102.

The comeback was spurred by a massive fourth-quarter rally that saw the Bucks outscore their visitors 33-14. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the way with 33 points, but Lillard also did his part to down his former squad, scoring 31 points. Three other scored in double figures for the Bucks while the Trail Blazers were led by Jerami Grant's 22 points.

The Bucks are back in action tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. when they take on the Miami Heat in the NBA In-Season Tournament.

No Southern Door statistics were reported, but their defense was challenged by Kaylee Jensen, who scored 17 points for the Raiders. Katelyn Klein chipped in eight points, but no other Raiders players scored more than five as the Eagles won their first game of the season.

Phoenix men and women score victories Saturdays

Entering their respective matchups as underdogs, both Green Bay Phoenix basketball teams emerged victorious Saturday afternoon.

In Cancun, the Phoenix women took down their second ranked opponent in as many weeks, beating Washington State 59-48. Entering the second quarter down by four points, the Phoenix outscored the Cougars 20-11 to take a lead they would not give up. Maddy Schreiberled the Phoenix with 12 points while Jenna Guyer added 11 points, and Bailey Butler chipped in 10 more. The Cougars were led by Charlisse Leger-Walker's 17 points and Tara Wallack's 16 points. Following the conclusion of the Cancun Challenge, Luxemburg-Casco alumna Cassie Schiltz was named to the All-Tournament Team. According to GreenBayPhoenix.com, the last time Green Bay won two games against an AP-Top 25 team was during the 2017-18 season when they took down #24 Arizona State (at the Cancun Challenge) and #23 Marquette at the Kress Center. The Phoenix are back home on November 30th when they battle Milwaukee in their Horizon League opener.

In Green Bay, the Phoenix men beat St. Thomas 64-51. They took a 10-point lead into the break and never allowed the Tommies to get within eight points. A big reason for the upset according to Vegas oddsmakers was because of the Phoenix's defense, limiting the Tommies to just 31 percent shooting from the field. Elijah Jones was the leading scorer for the Phoenix with 12 points followed by Marcus Hall with 10 points. Noah Reynolds did a little bit of everything for the Phoenix, contributing seven points, six rebounds, and six assists. This upcoming week, the Phoenix will head to Fort Wayne to take on the Mastodons before returning home to face UW-Milwaukee on Saturday.

Badgers take back the axe

The Wisconsin Badgers will have Paul Bunyan's Axe with them when they return to Madison after beating Minnesota 28-14.

He helped lead the Badgers from an early 7-0 deficit to outscoring the host Golden Gophers over the next two quarters. Tanner Mordecai threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns in the Badgers win. Athan Kaliakmanis threw for one touchdown and an interception in the loss for the Gophers.

The Badgers will now wait for their bowl game opponent.

Southern Door girls play in Denmark

The Southern Door girls basketball team will end their Thanksgiving holiday early with a tournament in Denmark on Saturday.

The Eagles went 14-11 last season, running into a tough Algoma team that ousted them from the WIAA Tournament. Ashlyn Delfosse (10.7 ppg) and Payton Gilbertson (10.2 ppg) will anchor the offense that lost Alianna Dufek to graduation during the offseason.

Cedar Grove-Belgium, Two Rivers, and Denmark are also scheduled to compete. Denmark lost to Sheboygan South 39-32 in its opener last week. Two Rivers were handled by Sevastopol 58-24 in their season opener on Tuesday. Cedar Grove-Belgium lost both of their games last week to Sheboygan Falls (53-35) and Plymouth (51-48).

The first games begin at noon.

Phoenix women fall to Terps, both teams in action Saturday

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team saw one game slip away ahead of their final day in the Cancun Challenge.

On Friday, the Maryland Terrapins outscored the Phoenix 23-15 in the final quarter to win the game 68-59. Both teams struggled to shoot in the game as they both shot below 35 percent. The Phoenix found it hard to hit a shot from behind the arc, shooting nine percent. They did start out strong, starting the game on a 10-2 run, but the Terps would not go away quietly. They outrebounded the Phoenix 57-33, showing off their size and strength to the undersized Green Bay squad. Maddy Schreiber scored 12 points while Callie Genke added 11 points. Two other Phoenix players scored nine points. The Terps were led by Shyanne Summers and her 23 points.

The Phoenix women will play their final game of the Cancun Challenge against nationally ranked Washington State. After throttling Maryland in their first game, the Cougars nearly doubled up UMass, winning 90-48. The two teams play each other at 12:30 p.m.

The Phoenix men are also in action on Saturday, hosting St. Thomas at 2 p.m. They are coming off a 1-1 trip to Bozeman where they beat Montana State and lost to UC-Riverside. The Tommies are 3-3 after beating Portland State 76-70 in their last game.

Packers feast on Lions' mistakes in Thanksgiving victory

The Green Bay Packers surprised a national audience on Thursday, beating the division-leading Detroit Lions 29-22.

The Packers started fast when a 50-plus yard pass play set up a 10-yard touchdown throw from Jordan Love to Jayden Reed on the game's opening drive. After the Lions scored a touchdown on the first drive, the Packers would find the endzone again when Love hooked up with Tucker Kraft from nine yards out. Jonathan Owens made a game-changing play when he picked up a Jared Goff fumble and took it 27 yards to make it 20-6 after one-quarter of play. The Packers' Anders Carlson would make it 23-6 to cap off the scoring in the first half.

The two teams would trade scores in the second half as the Lions' offense started to make it progress. A 16-yard passing touchdown from Love to Christian Watson would loom large as the Lions would eventually get the game to within a score. After a late touchdown by the Lions, Reed recovered an onside kick to allow Love to kneel the ball out to end the threat.

The Packers will now have time to recover and trim down its injury list before the Kansas City Chiefs come to town to kick off December.

Phoenix women thrash UMass, face Maryland next

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team passed the first test of its Cancun Challenge with ease on Thursday, getting past UMass 85-52.

The Phoenix scored over 20 points in three of the four quarters, shooting over 51 percent from the field on the day including 41 percent from behind the arc. A 9-0 run to begin the game made the rest of the game academic as they were able to easily stretch the game from there.

Luxemburg-Casco product Cassie Schiltz led all Phoenix players with 16 points while Natalie McNeal (14 points) and Maren Westin (13 points) also cracked double figures.

The Phoenix will likely face a tougher task on Friday when they face Big 10 opponent Maryland. The Terrapins had been in the Top 25 as recently as last week, but losses to top-ranked South Carolina and sixth-ranked Connecticut knocked them out. They lost to #22 Washington State 87-67 in their Cancun Challenge opener. Tip-off is set for 12:30 p.m.

Blizzard announce additional signings

Packers, Lions celebrate Thanksgiving in Detroit

The Green Bay Packers will try to stretch their winning ways to two games while breaking a long losing streak to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving.

The Packers headed into a short week on a high note after beating the Los Angeles Chargers 23-20 at Lambeau Field on Sunday. The two teams would exchange the lead four times in the second half with touchdown passes to Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson on either side of a Chargers' field goal to start the third quarter and a touchdown pass to Keenan Allen. The Chargers would have one last chance to score, but they turned the ball over on downs to give the Packers the victory.

The Lions had their own heart attack on Sunday but eventually prevailed against the Chicago Bears 31-26. That extended their NFC North winning streak to seven games and put them in the driver's seat to win their first divisional crown since it was known as the NFC Central in 1993. The Lions already embarrassed the Packers this season, beating them at Lambeau Field 34-20 in front of a Honolulu blue-clad crowd.

Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.

Phoenix open Cancun Challenge play Thursday

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team is celebrating Thanksgiving south of the border this year as they open Cancun Challenge play on Thursday.

The Phoenix opened their six-game road trip with an extra dose of confidence moving forward as they beat #22 Creighton 65-53. The Phoenix set the tone against the Big East power early, outscoring them 22-9 in the game's opening stanza. A 17-0 run to end the first quarter and a 10-2 run to finish the second quarter gave the Phoenix a nine-point lead at the break. The Blue Jays would get to within four points late in the game, but the Phoenix knocked down free throws when it mattered to secure the upset.

Their first matchup is against UMass, which has opened its season with losses against Harvard, Monmouth, and Maine. The Phoenix will play Maryland on Friday and #23 Washington State on Saturday in Cancun. Thursday's game begins at 12:30 p.m.

What I'm Thankful For: Luxemburg-Casco's Neil Seering

I am thankful for my faith, my family, my friends, and the opportunities I have to teach, coach, and lead others and, more importantly, to form and develop meaningful and impactful relationships. I am thankful for all of the coaches I work with and the time, effort, and dedication they each give to make our teams be their best. I am thankful for all the student-athletes I have been blessed to coach, to be a small part of their lives to hopefully have made a small difference and helped make them believe in themselves, that they are enough, and I love them no matter what.  I’m thankful for living in a small community where values like faith and family are still our foundation.  I’m thankful for their unwavering support, hard work, and embracing “The Yellow Bus Team”. It takes a village to do this, and in our case, it takes two.  I’m thankful for a small idea, “The Brotherhood of Belief,” and how it has moved, inspired, and has had people believe in something bigger than themselves, that faith, hope, and love in each other is something that we should all be thankful for no matter what the circumstances or results of a game are.

In the end, it won’t matter how big your house is, what kind of car you drive, or how much money you make.  What will matter is, did we live the life God created us to live? Did we develop great relationships? Did we make a difference in the lives of others? Too many people realize too late that they are focused on the wrong things.  So my thankfulness as a husband, father, brother, son, friend, teacher, and coach revolves around this concept, and when I think of this, it reminds me of why I do what I do: to inspire change in others.

There are different kinds of gifts, there are different kinds of service, and there are different kinds of work that each of us do, but in all of them and in every one of you, God’s work shows up daily in all that you do.  He has placed each of you here for a purpose, even when it is not always noticed. I want to remind all of you of the positive influence you have on children, students, staff, and whomever you work within our communities, I am so very blessed and thankful to be a small part of this labor of love. Do not be afraid. Believe in yourself. You are all enough! I’m thankful for all of it.

Gamblers survive Capitols scare

The Green Bay Gamblers nearly saw its 4-1 lead evaporate on Wednesday night but held onto beat the Madison Capitols 4-3.

The Gamblers scored twice in the first and second period to set the tone early before the Capitols made things interesting in the final frame. Blake Bechen and Ben Poitras provided the scoring in the first period while Libor Nemec and Brady Zugec scored in the second. Nine different Gamblers registered at least one point in the game. Gajan stopped 24 of the 26 shots he faced.

Phoenix lost to UC Riverside for Big Sky split

The Phoenix men will return to Green Bay with a split from their visit to Montana State after losing to UC-Riverside 74-68 Tuesday night.

For the second straight night, the Phoenix saw themselves staring down the barrel of a halftime deficit after the Highlanders started out before settling on a five-point advantage. The Phoenix and Highlanders would exchange blows in the second half and kept the game close throughout thanks to the Phoenix shooting more than 50 percent from behind the arc. The Phoenix would tie the game after going on a 12-2 run, but that was reciprocated by the Highlanders with a 14-0 run that put the game away. A late rally by the Phoenix made the game close, but they were ultimately sent home with the loss.

Noah Reynolds once again led the Phoenix in scoring with 19 points. Rich Byhre was magnificent behind the arc as he scored 14 points while Marcus Hall and David Douglas Jr. each added 12 points. Isaiah Moses was the difference maker for the Highlanders, scoring 22 points.

The Phoenix return home Saturday for a 2 p.m. tilt against St. Thomas.

Gamblers, Capitols meet for Thanksgiving tradition

The Green Bay Gamblers and the Madison Capitols will meet for the third time in a week on Wednesday when they square off in a Resch Center Thanksgiving tradition.

On Friday, Lev Katzin scored twice, including the tally that put the game away as the Green Bay Gamblers won the first of three straight against the Madison Capitols 5-3. After giving up the game's first goal, the Gamblers scored twice on tallies by Libor Nemec and Julian Lutz to make it 2-1 after one period of play. The two teams would trade goals the rest of the way, with Katzin matching a Capitols goal in the second period to keep it a one-goal game before Michael DeAngelo and Katzin delivered the knockout blows in the third period. Goaltender Adam Gajan stopped 39 of 42 shots in the Gamblers victory.

The next night in Green Bay, The Green Bay Gamblers found themselves on the wrong side of a high-scoring affair on Saturday night at the Resch Center, falling to the Madison Capitols 6-4. The game was tied at three apiece heading into the third period thanks to Gamblers' goals from Julian Lutz, Josh Player, and Geno Carcone. Mykhailo Danylov would tie the game at 4-4 with just over 10 minutes left in the third period before Austin Burnevik finished off his hat trick with two goals in the final four minutes to give the Capitols a weekend split.

The rubber match will take place on Wednesday at the Resch Center at 7:05 p.m.

Girls basketball round-up: Sevastopol, Gibraltar win big, L-C opens season Tuesday

The holiday week of girls' basketball games got off to a good start on Monday with more games on the docket on Tuesday.

Gibraltar earned its first victory of the season with a 49-38 win over Hilbert on the road.

Sevastopol continued its hot shooting to start its season with a 58-24 victory.

Tuesday's games include Luxemburg-Casco opening the season at home against Marinette (7 p.m.) and Kewaunee hosting Manitowoc Lutheran, (7:30 p.m.).

Phoenix men outlast Bobcats, face UC Riverside

The margin for error proved slim all night long for the Green Bay Phoenix after they survived their matchup against the Montana State Bobcats 54-53.

Down by one point at halftime, the Phoenix outscored the Bobcats by a single tally in the second half and overtime to secure the program's first road non-conference win since the Linc Darner era. It did not look like it would be close after the Phoenix went on a 12-0 run at the beginning of the second half to give them a double-digit near the period's halfway point. Dueling fates at the free throw line allowed the Bobcats to claw back into the game, with the Phoenix shooting 50 percent from the line compared to 85 percent for the home team. A missed runner at the expiration of overtime was the difference between a win and a loss for the Phoenix, led by Noah Reynolds' 19 points.  Amari Jedkins recorded seven points and nine rebounds, while Preston Ruedinger added nine points and six rebounds. The Bobcats were led by Robert Ford III, who registered 26 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

The Phoenix will play in Bozeman again on Tuesday to face UC Riverside on a neutral court at 8 p.m. The Highlanders have dropped three straight games since an opening night victory against UC-Merced. They have also faced tough opponents since then with losses to Utah and North Carolina among the defeats.

By comparison, the Lions only had four players listed on their injury report. In both cases, the teams did not practice, so the designations estimate whether or not they would have participated.

In other roster moves, the Packers signed RB Patrick Taylor to the 53-man roster after their running backs all got injured on Sunday. The organization also released S Dallin Leavitt, signed RB James Robinson to the practice squad, and released LB Christian Young from the practice squad.

Packers power down Chargers

The Green Bay Packers head into a short week on a high note after beating the Los Angeles Chargers 23-20 at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

The Chargers opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a field goal before the two teams traded touchdowns on consecutive drives. The Packers' score came from Jayden Reed, who showed his speed on a 32-yard running play. Anders Carlson, who had an uneven day with a couple of misses on extra points and field goals, drilled a 28-yard field goal to tie the game at ten at the break.

The Packers will cram a full week of practices in just a few days as they prepare to head to Detroit on Thursday for a Thanksgiving tilt against the division-leading Lions.

Phoenix men play two at Montana State

The Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team will make the most of their trip to Bozeman with a pair of games over the next two days.

The Phoenix are coming off a 64-59 loss to Valparaiso last week. The team let a 31-26 first-half lead slip away and fell to the Beacons on the road in Horizon League action. The Phoenix were led by Noah Reynolds, who poured in 24 points, and Elijah Jones added 13 more with 15 boards.

On Monday, the team will face Montana State, who have started the campaign 2-1 after wins over Northwest Indian College and California, and a loss to Seattle University. The Phoenix will have to pick their poison with four Bobcats players averaging in double figures, including over 16 ppg from Brandon Walker.

The Phoenix will play in Bozeman again on Tuesday to face UC Riverside on a neutral court. The Highlanders have dropped three straight games since an opening night victory against UC-Merced. They have also faced tough opponents since then with losses to Utah and North Carolina among the defeats.

Both games are slated to start at 8 p.m.

Caps avenge loss vs. Gamblers

The Green Bay Gamblers found themselves on the wrong side of a high-scoring affair on Saturday night at the Resch Center, falling to the Madison Capitols 6-4.

The game was tied at 3 apiece heading into the third period thanks to Gamblers' goals from Julian Lutz, Josh Player, and Geno Carcone.

Packers hope to electrify crowd vs. Chargers

The Green Bay Packers will look for their fourth win of the season Sunday afternoon when the Los Angeles Chargers come to town.

The Packers found themselves with opportunities to leave Pittsburgh with a win, only to lose the game to the Steelers 23-19 Sunday afternoon. Love nearly threw for 300 yards, but his completion percentage was just above 50 percent, and his two interceptions canceled out his two earlier touchdown passes. A.J. Dillon led the team in rushing with 70 yards, 40 of which came on a single play.

The Chargers' offense has come alive over the last three weeks as they have averaged more than 30 points a game. They have gone 2-1 in that stretch with their lone defeat coming against the Detroit Lions in a 41-38 shootout. Justin Herbert threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns in the loss.

The afternoon concluded at the school where players, families, and fans were able to get a close-up of the trophy itself and celebrate the team's accomplishments.

The Spartans' winter sports seasons will finally get underway on Tuesday when the girls' basketball team hosts Marinette.

The two teams would trade goals the rest of the way with Katzin matching a Capitols goal in the second period to keep it a one-goal game before Michael DeAngelo and Katzin delivered the knockout blows in the third period.

The two teams face off again Saturday night in Green Bay at 6:05 p.m.

Bulaga retires as a Packer

The youngest offensive tackle to ever start a Super Bowl will retire as a Green Bay Packer.

Bryan Bulaga, who played for the Green and Gold for ten seasons 2010-2019, informed the organization of his plans to retire as a member of the Green Bay Packers after not being on a roster for the last two seasons and last playing for the Los Angeles Chargers. According to the Packers, he started 111 of 115 regular-season games and all 13 postseason contests he appeared in, including Super Bowl XLV.

"We want to send our congratulations to Bryan on a wonderful career and thank him for his contributions to the Packers," said General Manager Brian Gutekunst. "He was not only one of the premier right tackles in the National Football League, he was also a tremendous teammate who was key to the success of many teams. We wish him, his wife, Abbie, and their family all the best in the years ahead."

Bulaga will be one of the featured alumni at Sunday's Packers/Chargers game along with JC Tretter.

Phoenix women open road trip with upset of ranked Blue Jays

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team opened their six-game road trip with an extra dose of confidence moving forward as they beat #22 Creighton 65-53.

Maddy Schreiber led the Phoenix with 14 points, and Callie Genke added 11 points off the bench. Luxemburg-Casco product Cassie Schiltz also reached double figures, scoring 10 points along with four assists.

Gamblers open Capitols stretch on Friday

The Green Bay Gamblers will see plenty of their Wisconsin rivals beginning Friday night in Madison as they face the Capitols in the first three games over the next week.

Last weekend, the Gamblers won two games against the Lincoln Stars by identical 5-2 scores. In the Friday game, Chris Romaine, Brady Zugec, and Libor Nemec tallied the goals in the first period to give the Gamblers a 3-0 lead at intermission. The Gamblers and the Stars would trade goals throughout the third period, with Josh Player and Michael DeAngelo getting on the scoreboard for the home team. Different players starred on Saturday as Josh Player and Julian Lutz scored in the first period to give the Gamblers a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission. Chris Romaine made it 3-0 less than 40 seconds into the second period before the Stars got onto the board late in the frame. The Gamblers would tack on two more goals in the third period, thanks to tallies from Tanner Bruender and Jayson Shaugabay.

The Capitols are 1-3 in the month of November. That includes a wild 9-7 loss to Chicago and a 4-1 defeat to Des Moines last weekend. The Capitols are four points behind the Gamblers in the standings, sitting in fourth place.

Friday's night game will start at 7:05 p.m. The two teams will also play each other on Saturday (6:05 p.m.) and Wednesday (7:05 p.m.) at the Resch Center.

Spartans fall to Lodi in State Title on U102.1

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans came up short in their bid for a Division 4 State championship in Madison Thursday night, losing to the Lodi Blue Devils 38-14.

Blue Devil quarterback Mason Lane led a potent offense that put up 448 yards in total offense and scored touchdowns on their first four possessions.

The Spartans came back twice to narrow the lead to seven points in the first half but could not slow down the Blue Devils in the second half.

The Blue Devils scored on the first offensive play of the game on a 67-yard pass from Lane to Aiden Groskopf to put Lodi up 7-0.

After an interception, Lodi drove down and scored on a four-yard run by Lane to take a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Spartans fought back cutting the lead to 14-7 with 7:43 left in the second quarter on a two-yard run by Andrew Klass after L-C drove 65 yards in 14 plays.

Lodi would extend their lead to 21-7 with 5:15 left in the half on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Lane to Gavin Sargeant, but the Spartans responded quickly when Klass scored on a 58-yard wildcat run to make it 21-14 only seconds later.

A 59-yard touchdown by Brady Puhs on a screen pass from Lane gave the Blue Devils a 28-14 lead with 2:27 left in the half and a missed field goal at the end of the half by Lodi kept the Spartans within two scores.

The second half saw Lodi strike fast after another interception on a 74-yard touchdown run by Kyler Clemens, who finished the game with 147 yards on 18 carries.

A 23-yard field goal by Lodi closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter as the Blue Devils claimed the championship with a decisive 38-14 victory.

The Spartans were led by Klass on the ground with 81 yards on ten carries.  Senior Max Ronsman was held to just 31 yards on eight runs and was 13 for 26 passing for 163 yards with two interceptions, as the Blue Devil defense controlled the Spartan attack most of the night.  Trace Schoenebeck caught eight passes for 76 yards to lead the receiving crew.

The Spartans finish the season with an outstanding 12-2 overall record, a state runner-up trophy, and winners of the North Eastern Conference.

The program will miss the 15 seniors who played their last game for Luxemburg-Casco but can take pride in knowing they led a team to a historic state final in Madison.

He was released after training camp and claimed off of waivers by the Seattle Seahawks. Kelly played in five games for the Seahawks this season.

The Packers' Jaire Alexander did not practice with a shoulder injury, and safety Rudy Ford did not participate as well with a biceps injury.

The team is preparing to face the Los Angeles Chargers at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

Matthews, Kampman to be inducted into Packers Hall of Fame

Clay Matthews and Aaron Kampman will be inducted at the 53rd Hall of Fame Induction Banquet, slated to take place on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024, in the Lambeau Field Atrium.

Matthews was drafted out of USC in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact, making key plays, including a forced fumble in Super Bowl XLV. According to the Packers, he ranks No. 1 on the Packers' all-time list (since 1982) with 83.5 career sacks, including ten sacks in 2009, which tops the franchise record books for the most sacks in a rookie campaign. He earned six Pro Bowl selections during his Packers career, tied with Reggie White for the second-most selections by a defensive player in team history.

Kampman was drafted out of Iowa in the fifth round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He collected 54 sacks during his Packers career, which ranks fifth all-time. He had his breakout season in 2006 when he ranked No. 2 in the NFL with 15.5 sacks, the third-highest single-season total in team history. That year, he also posted 113 tackles, a franchise record for a Packers defensive lineman.

Packers fall short in Pittsburgh

The Green Bay Packers found themselves with opportunities to leave Pittsburgh with a win, only to lose the game to the Steelers 23-19 Sunday afternoon.

The two teams traded scores in the first quarter, with Jordan Love finding Romeo Doubs in the endzone to tie the game with under five minutes to go. The Steelers would dominate the early portions of the second quarter, scoring ten unanswered points. The Packers would find the endzone again late in the frame when Love connected with Jayden Reed to make it 17-13. A blocked extra point would loom large the rest of the game as two field goals kicked by Anders Carlson gave the Packers a 19-17 lead with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. Chris Boswell would give the Steelers the lead on his 49-yard field goal on the ensuing drive, and his 35-yard field goal provided the insurance the team would need. Love's final two drives would end inside the red zone as his two forced passes to Christian Watson were picked off by Steelers' defenders.

Love nearly threw for 300 yards, but his completion percentage was just above 50 percent, and his two interceptions canceled out his two earlier touchdown passes. A.J. Dillon led the team in rushing with 70 yards, 40 of which came on a single play.

Packers hope to build on winning streak vs. Steelers

The Green Bay Packers hope to secure a second straight win on Sunday when they play the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road.

The Packers snapped a four-game skid last Sunday with a 20-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. In that game, Aaron Jones got the scoring going with a three-yard touchdown run to make 7-0 en route to 99 total yards of offense on the day. The Rams would score their only points of the day toward the end of the half on a field goal, points that Anders Carlson would match in the final minutes of the third quarter. The Packers would add important insurance points in the fourth quarter, first on Carlson's second field goal of the day and then on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Luke Musgrave to put a cap on Jordan Love's day. Love had a quarterback rating of over 115 after going 20-26 for 228 yards and a touchdown.

The Steelers have won two of their last three games, including a 20-16 victory against the Tennessee Titans. Kenny Pickett threw for 160 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Kickoff is set for noon.

Phoenix women top Redbirds in home opener

The Green Bay Phoenix started strong and ended stronger in their 88-62 win over Illinois State on Saturday.

The Phoenix outscored the Redbirds 19-9 in the first quarter and 24-8 in the fourth quarter to send the Kress Center crowd home happy. They also shot over 50 percent from the field and over 40 percent from behind the arc. The bench also did their part for the Phoenix, outscoring the Redbirds 40-11 in that department.

Callie Genke led the Phoenix with a career-high 26 points and six rebounds in the matinee. Cassie Schiltz added 15 points and five rebounds, while Jasmine Kondrakiewicz registered 10 points and five rebounds in the victory.

The  Phoenix will play  again on November 16th at Creighton.

Gamblers match Friday's effort Saturday vs. Stars

The second verse was the same as the first for the Green Bay Gamblers as they beat the Lincoln Stars on Saturday.

Josh Player and Julian Lutz scored in the first period to give the Gamblers a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission. Chris Romaine made it 3-0 less than 40 seconds into the second period before the Stars got onto the board late in the frame. The Gamblers would tack on two more goals in the third period, thanks to tallies from Tanner Bruender and Jayson Shaugabay.

Gavin Moffatt secured the Gamblers' second straight 5-2 win over the Stars as he made 25 saves.

Door County United finish 10th at state meet

The Door County United swim team completed its season on Friday with a 10th-place finish at the WIAA State Swim Meet hosted by Waukesha South.

The United scored 94 points on the evening, roughly 200 points behind first-place Rhinelander.

The placing of the team overall and in each individual event does not tell the whole story with DCU swimmers, going faster than their seeded time in all but one event.

Senior Cassie Rankin posted the best podium finish on the team, coming in 6th place in the 500-yard freestyle.

You can find the results for the full state meet here.

Big first period paces Gamblers

Three first-period goals were all the Green Bay Gamblers would need to secure a victory against the Lincoln Stars Friday night, winning the game 5-2.

Chris Romaine, Brady Zugec, and Libor Nemec tallied the goals in the first period to give the Gamblers a 3-0 lead at intermission. The Gamblers and the Stars would trade goals throughout the third period with Josh Player and Michael DeAngelo getting on the scoreboard for the home team.

Chicago Blackhawks draft pick Adam Gajan picked up the win for the Gamblers, stopping 37 of 39 shots.

The two teams are back at it at the Resch Center Saturday night for a 6:05 p.m. puck drop.

Spartans win thriller on U102.1, Storm falls to Darlington on 104.1 WRLU

Only one team from the area will be heading to Madison as the State Semi-finals saw Luxemburg-Casco win a squeaker, while Kewaunee lost a heartbreaker.

Trace Schoenebeck kicked a 24-yard field goal in the final seconds to help the Spartans upend the Waukesha Catholic Memorial Crusaders 23-21in a Division 4 State Semi-Final football matchup in Kewaskum on U102.1 FM.

In Division 6, the Kewaunee Storm fell to Darlington Redbirds 34-28 in DeForest.

Phoenix women open home schedule vs. Illinois State

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team will open their home slate on Saturday afternoon with a matchup against Illinois State.

In Cedar Falls on Monday, the Phoenix saw their nine-point first-quarter lead disappear quickly in the second quarter as they lost to Northern Iowa 78-67. The Panthers outscored the Phoenix 25-11 in the second quarter and put them away for good in the fourth quarter. Natalie McNeal scored 14 points to lead the Phoenix, with Jenna Guyer chipping in 10.

The Redbirds' offense is firing on all cylinders, scoring more than 90 points in their exhibition against Illinois Wesleyan (94-56) and its regular season opener against Omaha (105-59). DeAnna Wilson scored more than 20 points in both contests for the defending Missouri Valley Conference champions.

Gamblers host Stars for weekend set

The Green Bay Gamblers return to action Friday and Saturday night with games against the Lincoln Stars at the Resch Center.

Hockey fans in the Chicagoland area were treated to exciting games and maybe a few heart attacks last weekend as the Green Bay Gamblers and the Chicago Steel had to go into overtime for both of their matchups. On Friday, Mikey DeAngelo provided the difference in a 5-4 Gamblers win that stretched eight rounds in the shootout. Chris Romaine had two assists, and Geno Carcone had two goals in the win. The Gamblers were not as lucky on the getaway day as they forced the extra frame but lost 1-0 in overtime on Saturday. Anthony Cardilli scored the game-winning goal for the Steel.

The Stars dropped two games to two different teams on consecutive days last weekend, losing to Sioux Falls 3-2 and Cedar Rapids 4-1. They sit in seventh place in the Western Conference with eight points.

Friday's game will feature a 7:05 puck drop, while Saturday's matchup will occur at 6:05 p.m.

State meet opens for DCU swimmers Friday

Nine Door County United swimmers will open their weekend at the WIAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Waukesha on Friday.

The team finished 3rd in last week's sectional meet, just seven points behind the runner-up team.  Julia Michalski was the sectional champion in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke. Julia finished first overall in both events at sectionals, automatically sending her to the state tournament. Cassie Rankin and Kailyn Neville punched their ticket to state in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events. The 200-yard medley relay, consisting of Julia Michalski (SBHS), Danica Neville (SDHS), Isabella Jimenez Seyfer (SBHS), and Caitlyn Hasenjager (SEV), was the first to qualify for the state competition during the meet. The relay finished 2nd overall with a time of 1:53.90. The 200-yard freestyle relay will also swim again at state after a 2nd place finish at sectionals and a time of 1:44.13. The members of that relay are Cassie Rankin (SEV), Danica Neville (SDHS), Natalia Michalski (SBHS), and Caitlyn Hasenjager (SEV). The final relay to qualify for state was the 400-yard freestyle relay, with members being Cassie Rankin (SEV), Kailyn Neville (SDHS), Natalia Michalski (SBHS), and Julia Michalski (SBHS). The relay finished 2nd as well, and the time was 3:46.26.

The state meet will take place at the Waukesha South Natatorium, with the swimmers taking the pool at 5:30 p.m. Qualifiers will then advance to the finals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Counsell bolts to Cubs

Free agent manager Craig Counsell has found a home, and it will not be American Family Field.

The Athletic and ESPN's Jeff Passan were among the first to report on Monday that Counsell, a Milwaukee Brewers player, front-office employee, and manager for over 15 years, signed a new deal with the rival Chicago Cubs.

The Brewers reportedly had offered Counsell $5.5 million to come back to Milwaukee, but reports indicate that Counsell wanted to do his part to help reset the pay scale for managers so that they would get paid more. Counsell will move into a new office at 1060 West Addison in Chicago to the tune of five years, $40 million.

Early signs are the Brewers will move on Counsell's bench coach Pat Murphy, among other candidates, for their managerial position. Counsell's contract as the Brewers manager expired on October 31st, turning down previous offers from the organization for an extension.

Both Green Bay basketball teams headed back from Iowa on Monday night, still searching for their first wins after losing their openers.

In Cedar Falls, the Phoenix saw their nine-point first-quarter lead disappear quickly in the second quarter as they lost to Northern Iowa 78-67. The Panthers outscored the Phoenix 25-11 in the second quarter and put them away for good in the fourth quarter. Natalie McNeal scored 14 points to lead the Phoenix, with Jenna Guyer chipping in 10.

The Phoenix men were never in their matchup against Iowa State in Ames, losing 85-44. The Cyclones' defense held the Phoenix to just over 28 percent shooting on the evening, including 24 percent from behind the arc. Noah Reynolds led the way for the Phoenix with 14 points, while Foster Wonders registered 11 points.

Both teams are back at the Kress Events Center later this week, with the men playing St. Francis on Thursday night and the women battling Illinois State on Saturday afternoon.

Packers announce NFL Draft dates

The details are still minimal, but we now know when Green Bay will welcome the NFL Draft in 2025.

The Green Bay Packers, the NFL, and local leaders announced Monday that the NFL Draft would occur on April 24-26.

Not many other details were shared other than the draft activities at Lambeau Field and the surrounding area, including the adjacent Titletown.

President and CEO Mark Murphy suggests the NFL Draft will have an economic impact of $94 million, more than six times what occurs for a home game.

Gamblers split nailbiters in Chicago

Hockey fans in the Chicagoland area were treated to a pair of exciting games and maybe a few heart attacks as the Green Bay Gamblers and the Chicago Steel had to go into overtime for both of their matchups.

On Friday, Mikey DeAngelo provided the difference in a 5-4 Gamblers win that stretched eight rounds in the shootout. Chris Romaine had two assists, and Geno Carcone had two goals in the win.

The Gamblers were not as lucky on getaway day as they forced the extra frame but lost 1-0 in overtime on Saturday. Anthony Cardilli scored the game-winning goal for the Steel.

The Gamblers are back at the Resch Center this weekend when they host Lincoln on Friday at 7:05 p.m.

Packers shear Rams at Lambeau Field

The Green Bay Packers broke a four-game losing streak on Sunday with a 20-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams at Lambeau Field.

Aaron Jones got the scoring going with a three-yard touchdown run to make 7-0 en route to 99 total yards of offense on the day.

The Packers are back in action next Sunday on the road in Pittsburgh when they take on the Steelers after improving to 3-5 on the season.

Green Bay teams swing through Iowa

Two teams will be in one state on Monday as the Green Bay basketball squads open up against teams from the Cyclone State.

The Phoenix men will take on Iowa State at 7 p.m. in their season opener. They only had one exhibition game to tune up for their match-up against the Cyclones, a 65-63 win over St. Norbert last week. Monday will mark a lot of firsts for the Phoenix as head coach Sundance Wicks and 12 of the team's 15 players will go to battle in their first regular season matchup representing Green Bay. The Cyclones will feature plenty of new faces as well after going 19-14 overall and 9-9 in the Big 12 last season.

The Phoenix women will be under 100 miles away for their regular season opener at Northern Iowa. They won both exhibition matchups against UW-Stout and Northern Michigan heading into the matchup. Despite past success aginst the program, the Phoenix will face a strong Panthers squad that went  23-10 overall record, tallying a 16-4 conference record.  Their game begins at 6:05 p.m.

Packers look to right ship against Rams

The Green Bay Packers will need to get out of their offensive funk if they want to get their third win of the year against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

The Packers' offense barely reached the century mark in first-half yardage for the second week in their 24-10 loss last week against the Minnesota Vikings, failing to pick up a first down until four minutes left in the second half. They would pick up five first downs on their lone scoring drive, ending with a 30-yard field goal by Anders Carlson, only made possible because of a Vikings penalty. The Packers were lucky to only be down by seven at the break after Kirk Cousins engineered two scoring drives, including a touchdown run by Cam Akers. The Vikings continued their dominance in the third quarter, with Cousins throwing two touchdown passes in two minutes, including one that came on the heels of a Jordan Love interception.  A one-yard touchdown grab by Romeo Doubs capped off the scoring for the game despite the Packers having the ball inside the Vikings' 25-yard line twice in the fourth quarter.

The Rams have dropped three of their last four games, including a 43-20 loss to Dallas in their last game. The Packers will likely face Brett Rypien behind center after Matt Stafford sprained his thumb in the Cowboys' loss. A Rams win would break a three-game losing streak at Lambeau Field, which dates back to 2021.

Kickoff is set for noon.

DCU qualifies several for state meet

The Door County United swim team will be well represented at next weekend's WIAA State Meet.

Julia Michalski qualified individually in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke. Cassie Rankin qualified in the 500-yard freestyle.

DCU qualified two relay teams as well: 400-yard medley and 200-yard medley.

FROM HEAD COACH KELLY ORAM-RANKIN

The Door County United Girls Swim Team will be sending nine swimmers on to the state tournament on Friday, November 10th, following their performance at the sectionals meet at Plymouth High School on Saturday, November 4th. The team finished 3rd in the meet, only 7 points behind the runner-up team.  Julia Michalski is the sectional champion in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke. Julia finished first overall in both events at sectionals, automatically sending her to the state tournament. Cassie Rankin and Kailyn Neville punched their ticket to state in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events. The 200-yard medley relay, consisting of Julia Michalski (SBHS), Danica Neville (SDHS), Isabella Jimenez Seyfer (SBHS), and Caitlyn Hasenjager (SEV), was the first to qualify for state during the meet. The relay finished 2nd overall with a time of 1:53.90. The 200-yard freestyle relay will also swim again at state with another 2nd place finish at sectionals and a time of 1:44.13. The state qualifiers were supported by the rest of the sectionals team, who assisted in scoring points toward the third-place finish. Those swimmers were Chloe Bissen (SBHS) and Shaeffer Rass (SEV). The season doesn’t end here for this sectionals team, and we wish them luck on their state competition on Friday at Waukesha South High School Natatorium!

Milwaukee soccer gets boost from state

The future of USL Championship soccer in Wisconsin got a boost this week when Governor Tony Evers used $9.3 million of ARPA funds to go towards a new soccer stadium in Milwaukee's Iron District.

"We are excited to accept the support from Tony Evers, who approved $9.3 million to further the development of Iron District MKE! With the backing of the Governor's office, we are one step closer to bringing pro soccer to MKE and WI," the organization said on its social media accounts shortly after the announcement.

The organization recently partnered with the Cramer Krasselt agency to start developing the brand and name of the club.

DCU swims for state bids Saturday

The Door County United Swim Team hopes to extend its successful season another week with a successful run on Saturday at the WIAA Sectional Meet hosted by Plymouth.

The Door County United swim team's swimmers are seeded in the top three in five events according to the heat sheets released ahead of this Saturday's WIAA Swimming Sectional meets.

Julia Michalski, named the conference's swimmer of the year, boasts a number one seed in two different events: the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke.

The DCU swims on Saturday at Plymouth beginning at 10 a.m. Ashwaubenon, Berlin, Chilton, Clintonville, Kiel, Kohler, Marinette, New London, Notre Dame Academy, Peshtigo, Port Washington, Seymour, and Two Rivers will also compete in the sectional.

Football Playoffs Recap: Luxemburg-Caco, Kewaunee advance to state semi-finals

Kewaunee County will have two high school football teams competing in the WIAA State semi-finals next Friday night in Level 4 playoffs as Kewaunee and Luxemburg-Casco won Friday night on 104.1 WRLU, and 96.7 WBDK, respectively.

In Division 4, the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans shocked the #1 ranked Two Rivers Raiders 24-21 on the road, behind a clutch performance by Max Ronsman and Trace Schoenebeck, and a relentless defense that held the Raider offense in check most of the night.

In Kewaunee, the Storm blew past the St. Mary's Springs Ledgers 30-0 and will advance in the Division 6 playoffs.

Badgers look for bounce back against Hoosiers

The Wisconsin Badgers are looking for a comeback on Saturday when they travel to Bloomington to face Indiana.

The Badgers hung with the Ohio State Buckeyes but eventually folded 24-10. The Buckeyes kept the Badgers offense in check, holding Braelon Allen to 50 yards rushing and Braedyn Locke to under 50 percent on his completions and less than 200 yards passing.

The Hoosiers gave a scare to Penn State early but lost to the Nittany Lions 33-24. Brendan Sorsby threw three touchdowns and 269 yards, matching Penn State's Drew Allar in the loss.

Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.

Gamblers head south for Steel tilts

The Green Bay Gamblers will face a much different Chicago Steel team than they have grown accustomed to over the last few years when they play against each other in Geneva, Ill., on Friday and Saturday.

The Gamblers picked up a big three-game sweep last weekend over Muskegon, two of which were nailbiters before cruising to a much less stressful win on Sunday. That allowed the Gamblers to climb up to a three-way tie for third place, four points behind first-place Dubuque.

At the bottom of the conference is the Steel, which has opened the season with a record of 1-8-1. The Steel has dominated the USHL since the beginning of the decade with a pair of Anderson and Clark Cups to their credit. They did so with an efficient offense, which has not happened this year. The Steel are being outscored 52-29 on the season.

The two games will occur at the Fox Valley Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m.

Board of Control Approves Rule Changes in Two Spring Sports

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control approved coaches advisory committee rule change recommendations in baseball and track & field at its October meeting last week.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control approved coaches advisory committee rule change recommendations in baseball and track & field at its October meeting today.

Beginning in June 2024, the higher-seeded team at the State Baseball Tournament will be declared the home team for each game in all divisions. For regionals and for the sectional semifinal level, the higher-seeded team will be the home team in all divisions. For the sectional finals, the higher seed will be declared the home team in Division 1, and a coin flip will determine the home team in Divisions 2, 3 and 4.

The Board approved two recommendations advanced by the track & field coaches, effective in the spring of 2024, both pertain to the Tournament Series schedule. The first establishes the same order of field events for all divisions at the sectional meets and the State Meet to mirror the existing Division 1 order. The prescribed order will be girls high jump, girls long jump, girls shot put, boys pole vault, boys triple jump followed by boys discus, and then, flip the gender in the same order of events.

The second change impacts the Division 2 and 3 regionals and sectionals in 2024. The 200-meter dash preliminary heats will be eliminated to again mirror the existing Division 1 schedule. In addition, the schedule will be adjusted to conduct the boys 110 hurdles preliminaries followed by the girls 100 hurdles preliminaries. After a 15-minute break, the girls will run the finals of the 100 hurdles with the boys 110 hurdles final to follow.

On another action item, the Board approved the 2024-25 and 2025-26 fall season co-ops, which includes two new co-ops. Marion/Tigerton as well as St. Ambrose/Abundant Life Christian will operate as co-op cross country programs for boys and girls.

Among the discussions with the Board were a review of the 2023 Area Meetings, including feedback on the Menti polls and the coaching contact and membership expectation breakout discussions, as well as the ongoing efforts to recruit and retain licensed sport officials.

The Board was introduced to several possible Constitutional amendments that will be reviewed by the committee process to determine if they advance to the membership for a vote at the Annual Meeting.  The amendments under consideration address competition and practice restrictions; requiring the WIAA to be in compliance with all NFHS rules and regulations; Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) opportunities; and use of video replay to review all player ejections.

Dr. Timothy McGuine from the UW-Madison Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitations Department presented an update on research studies focused on concussions, protective equipment, and risk minimization, as well as the availability of athletic trainer personnel in member high schools.

The Board also received liaison reports from Paul Manriquez of the Department of Public Instruction, Dan Rossmiller of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards and Eric Plitzuweit of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association.

The WIAA, as defined by its Constitution, is a voluntary, unincorporated, and nonprofit organization. The membership oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 515 senior high schools and 43 junior high/middle level schools in its membership.

Phoenix women rally against Wildcats

For the second time in a week, Green Bay Phoenix basketball fans almost saw one of their teams lose to a lower-division opponent.

This time, it was the Phoenix women who had to rally twice to defeat Division 2 opponent Northern Michigan 63-56. The Wildcats held a five-point lead early in the first quarter and even took a slim one-point lead in the fourth quarter, only to see the Phoenix respond with runs of their own. A 10-0 rally in the fourth quarter cemented the Phoenix's perfect 2-0 exhibition record for 2023 as they prepare for their first regular season game on Monday at Northern Iowa.

Injury report lists familiar names for the Packers

Big names were on the injury list for the Green Bay Packers, but the good news for fans is that they all practiced on a limited basis this week.

Jaire Alexander (Back), Elgton Jenkins (Knee), Aaron Jones (Hamstring), Luke Musgrave (Ankle) and Yosh Nijman (Foot) were all listed on the report ahead of the Packers' matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, but they were all limited participants.

The Rams, by comparison, had ten players listed with Matt Stafford (thumb/hand), Rob Havenstein (Calf), and Ernest Jones (Knee) not practicing.

The Packers and Rams meet at Lambeau Field on Sunday at noon.

Gamblers add forward to roster

The Green Bay Gamblers added a forward to their roster on Wednesday, bringing in Alex Pelletier from Avon Old Farms School varsity and the Yale Jr. Bulldogs 18U teams.

According to the Gamblers, Pelletier has 19 goals and 30 points in 23 18U AAA games with the Bulldogs in the fall season, plus another 8 goals and 9 points in 8 BEAST conference play.

The Cornell commit will split time with Avon Old Farms and the Gamblers for the rest of the season. He will make his Gamblers debut this Saturday and Sunday against the Chicago Steel.

Bucks face Raptors in Toronto

The Milwaukee Bucks will have their road opener this season north of the border as they travel to Toronto to take on the Raptors in NBA action on Wednesday.  The Bucks (2-1) are coming off a 122-114 win over the Miami Heat on Monday.  Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 33 points, while Damian Lillard bounced back with 25 points after struggling against the Hawks on Sunday.  Toronto (1-3) lost to the Portland Trailblazers 99-91 at home on Monday and were led by Pascal Siakam and Scottie Barners, who scored 20 points each in the loss.

Tip-off of Wednesday’s game is set for 6 p.m. from Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

Badgers open with UW-Stevens Point in exhibition basketball game

The 2023-24 version of the Wisconsin Badgers will play their first game of the season Wednesday night at home.  In an exhibition game, the Badgers will face in-state UW-Steven Point from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Association.  The tradition of playing Division 2 state schools started 18 years ago and includes head coach Greg Gard’s alma mater UW-Platteville.

Wisconsin returns starting guards Max Klesmit and Chucky Hepburn this year and looks to contend in the Big Ten Conference title race.  The Badgers lost in the NIT semi-finals last year and failed to reach the NCAA tournament for only the second time since 1998.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Kohl Center in Madison.
