Dorothy Louise (Schumacher) Berg

"On Saturday, June 21, 2025, I, Dorothy Louise (Schumacher) Berg, age 99 (52 days shy of being 100), of the Town of Sevastopol, left this world to join my husband, Ralph Berg, our youngest daughter, Laurie Connell, my parents, and many other relatives and friends. I was born August 12, 1925, in Peoples Hospital on what is now Memorial Drive in Sturgeon Bay. Cleveland "Cleve" and Emeline (Peterson) Schumacher were my parents. I grew up on my parents' farm in the Town of Nasewaupee and enjoyed every moment of farm life. It was here that I enjoyed the many animals that were part of a farm which included cats, dogs, calves, and horses. It was on this farm that I learned to, and enjoyed, driving my dad's team of horses, Bob and Nig. This love of animals extended to all animals whether tame or wild. I attended Wilson School on County S for my first eight grades and graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1942. It was in high school that I took many business courses which helped me in my job at Door County Abstract and Insurance Company. I learned to play the violin in grade school and happily played it in the high school orchestra and with the Sawyer Methodist Church orchestra. On October 9, 1948, Ralph and I were married in the Algoma United Methodist Church. We had 67 fun years together. We had a great married life, buying our home in the Town of Sevastopol, raising our two daughters, Susan and Laurie, and enjoying all the happy times spent with them. At our home, we enjoyed many cats, dogs, and horses. Yes, I even bought my own Arabian horse, Sadiq, as did Ralph, Sahara, to ride and enjoy. We had so much fun, and Sue and Laurie had ponies and eventually needed horses, Sue's Golden Joe, and Laurie's Champ. Ralph and I were charter members of the Cherryland Horse Club and were members of the Cherryland Drill Team; and we helped with the Special Express Project for many years. Ralph and I enjoyed traveling. We traveled to 49 states, most of the Canadian provinces, and Mexico. We went to Europe several times. We also traveled to Africa. In all our travels, we enjoyed meeting the people and seeing the animals of those parts of the world. Over the years, Ralph and I had fun raising our daughters, Sue and Laurie, square-dancing, cross-country skiing (often with friends), collecting antiques, garage sales, visiting with our friends, and tending to our home, garden, and pets. I was an activity leader for the Pioneer 4-H Club, a pink lady at the Door County Memorial Hospital, and am a member of the United Methodist Church in Sturgeon Bay. Throughout my years, I couldn't resist picking up interesting rocks and fossils from Door County or from our travels. On October 27, 2015, we lost Ralph. He left this world for a much better place - Heaven. We miss him so much. On October 17, 2024, our youngest daughter, Laurie, passed away. Along with Ralph and Laurie, I am preceded in death by my parents, Cleve and Emeline Schumacher; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois (Ken) Soule and Nina (Robert) Evenson; Ralph's parents, Rudy and Ella Berg; Ralph's sisters, Ruth Petzka and Dorothy; and nieces, Joyce Petzka and Sharon Bergantino. I am survived by my daughter and sons-in law, Susan (Jeffrey) Deprez of Reedsville and Dale Connell of Sturgeon Bay; and two nephews, Gary Soule of Sturgeon Bay and Rock Evenson of Jackson, WI. My funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at Sturgeon Bay United Medthodist, 836 Michigan Street, with Pastor JoAnn Meyer and Pastor David Leistra officiating. I will be laid to rest in Schumacher Cemetery, beside my husband, Ralph. Visitation will held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at Huehns Funeral Home, 1414 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay and will continue at the church on Wednesday from 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Memorials made be given in my memory for the Sturgeon Bay United Methodist Church Parish Nurse Program (836 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235; www.sturgeonbayumc.org); or the Door County Land Trust (P.O. Box 65, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235; www.doorcountylandtrust.org). Have Fun, Everyone, Love, and God Bless." -Dorothy Expressions of sympathy, memories and photos may be shared with my family via my tribute page at www.HuehnsFuneralHome.com. Note from my daughter, Sue: My mother enjoyed meeting and talking to people. There are several people who she really has enjoyed being with these past years. I'd like to mention some and apologize to those who I might miss: Jean, Joyce, Donna, Linda, Julie, Jamie, Karen, Marty, Anika, Lars, Danny, Mike, all of the Haberli kids, and all of the people who took care of my mother these past five years. She enjoyed all of you.

Deb A. (Marit) Laurent

Deb A. (Marit) Laurent, 68, Bellevue, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Monday, June 16, 2025. She was born July 27, 1956, in Algoma to Clarence and Rose Marie (Paral) Marit. Deb graduated from St. Mary Grade School and Algoma High School in 1974. Deb married Allen Laurent on September 6, 1975, at St. Mary Church in Algoma. Deb and Allen were blessed with two daughters; Hillary (Adam) Schellinger and Courtney (William Depaz.) Deb was a passionate, driven, strong and hardworking woman. She thrived as a business owner. Many remember Deb working at her bar/restaurant on Highway 54 in Algoma. Deb later owned Wintergreen Resort in Park Falls, Wisconsin. Deb was a true “people person” with a heart of gold who could strike up a conversation and make friends with anyone. Deb’s winning personality, sense of humor, generous spirit, good nature and good cooking made her truly a one-of-a-kind daughter, sister, mother and friend. Those close to Deb knew of her struggles in recent years. Deb suffered a major stroke in 2021. Doctors were shocked and amazed she even survived. Deb fought hard for her life and worked hard through her recovery. Deb was strong, brave and fiercely determined to get back everything she lost from her stroke—she did it! Sometimes it’s good to be stubborn, right? Deb enjoyed reading, working on puzzles, cooking, tending to her plants, relaxing outdoors with a good cup of coffee and spending time with treasured family and friends. Deb enjoyed regular weekly shopping and errand trips with Courtney. They referred to these trips affectionately as “Yank Around Wednesdays.” Wednesdays won’t quite be the same, but thankfully they shared countless laughs and memories. Deb also liked to go on casino runs with William, her son-in-law. There were plenty of road trip “turn and burn” visits with Hillary and time spent making memories with her granddaughters, Lauren and Claire. Deb will be greatly missed beyond measure. Bert spent his summers in Whitefish Bay with his brothers and sisters, and he cherished Door County, choosing to spend his final days there. With the help of his siblings, in-laws, nieces, and nephews, Bert enjoyed one last great summer in a place he loved. During that time, he fished, took a plane ride around Door County, attended a Packers game, discovered his love for art, and became quite skilled at flying drones. A special thank you to Bert's caretaker, Shelly Defere, who was truly Bert's best friend and fishing companion. A lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, Bert attended many World Series games with his brothers Mike, Bill, John, and Tom. He loved sharing everything Packers with his nephew Jack. He was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, often sharing stories of his adventures from the 1960s. His family eagerly anticipated his visits to Door County, never knowing what gadgets he would bring along. He loved giving his grandnephew/niece small gifts. Bert was an all-around athlete. He loved to golf and play ball, but sailing was his true passion. He sailed the Melges E-Scow while living in Madison and spent countless hours sailing with his brother Mike in Whitefish Bay. Bert spent time sailing in France with his sister Pat. Every year, he joined his brothers to attend the Indy 500, a race their father loved. In 1965, Bert was honored with the Carnegie Hero Award for rescuing a driver from a burning car in St. Louis, showcasing his heroism. Bert was also a fan of Bob Dylan, much to his father's chagrin. He often quoted a line from Bob's 1968 song, "Wanted Man," which was initially written for Johnny Cash: "I've had all that I wanted of a lot of things I've had." Albert's family would like to thank the fantastic staff at Serenity Springs and Unity Hospice for their loving care. He will be profoundly missed.

Gladys Thierer Szabo

Gladys Thierer Szabo was a blessing to everyone she met during her long life. As a speech therapist, she gave the gift of speech to countless children, working patiently to help them overcome stuttering and other communication problems, and helping stroke survivors relearn how to talk. The blessings she bestowed upon the world will not end with her death; the children she taught to communicate have lived happier, more fulfilling lives, and they are with us to this day. The speech therapists whom she mentored became more skilled and better able to help their clients reach their potential. As a mother and Sunday school teacher, she taught children to follow Christ's example of compassion and tolerance, showing respect for people from different walks of life. Gladys' giving nature inspired her children to seek out careers where they could make a positive difference in the world. As George Eliot wrote, "The effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life." Gladys believed in following Christ's example in all aspects of life. She felt compassion for the poor and a moral obligation to help them, generously donating money to people living in poverty even when her family was struggling financially. Like many people born during the Great Depression, Gladys was raised to be frugal. As an adult, she never wasted food and often reused her tea bags. Yet Gladys was also uncommonly generous, sponsoring vulnerable children in developing countries for decades. In later life, she donated one quarter of her income to charity. Gladys listened more than she spoke; if she didn't have something nice to say, she usually said nothing at all. If Gladys disagreed with you about an issue, you probably didn't know it, because she was so agreeable and tolerant. She lived the Gospel through her humble example, rather than through preaching. Gladys grew up on a farm near Montfort, Wisconsin and was the youngest of six children. Although she was not athletic, she loved being outdoors, often noting that she spent much of her childhood in a tree reading a book. She adored her dog, Mickey, a white spitz. Gladys attended Willow Springs Country School, a one-room schoolhouse; St. Anthony's Parochial School; and Highland High School, where she was valedictorian in 1949. Gladys noted that her first school had only three books, but she read them over and over, until she had nearly memorized them. She attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she earned a bachelor's degree in speech and language therapy. She was the first member of her family to graduate from college. Gladys put herself through college largely with money that she earned herself. She was frequently forced to drop out of college and get a job when her funds ran low. But she never gave up. As soon as Gladys saved enough money for tuition, she would re-enroll in class. Gladys met Steve Szabo, her future husband, at a square dance while they were both students in Madison. When Steve invited her to a restaurant the next week, Gladys was so impressed that she thought Steve must be "one of those rich guys from out East." She didn't realize that Steve had likely spent a week's salary on clothes, flowers and dinner that night. They married in 1955. Gladys and Steve moved 10 times in the first decade of their marriage as they followed Steve's career from Wisconsin to New Mexico, Maryland and Virginia. All four of their children were born in different states. Gladys was a devoted mother, and frequently said that the years she spent at home with her children were the happiest of her life. She loved to grow flowers, and her home in Rockland County, New York was radiant with purple lilacs, pink and white dogwoods and azaleas, cream-colored lilies of the valley and fuchsia rhododendrons that grew taller than the roof of their house. Gladys was very involved in her children's lives and activities, sewing most of her daughter Susan's dresses and volunteering as a Brownie troop leader. She also served as a den mother when her sons, Ernie and Stephen, were in the Cub Scouts. Gladys volunteered as a children's Sunday school teacher at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spring Valley, New York, where she was a long-time member. Every Sunday, she drove her children and her dear friend, Margaret Greco - who was like a grandmother to Gladys' children - to Catholic Mass. In 1970, after her three oldest children were in elementary school, Gladys went back to school to earn a master's degree from Hunter College in New York City. As a girl raised in the country, she often said that she felt very brave taking the bus into Manhattan for night classes. Gladys' studies were again interrupted, this time by the birth of her fourth and youngest child, Elizabeth. Gladys returned to work full time as a speech therapist when Elizabeth was three years old. Gladys helped pioneer the role of working mother, part of the first wave of women to go back to work while raising a family. Gladys worked at the Jawonio, also know then as the Rockland County Center for the Physically Handicapped Center, for 25 years, and was eventually promoted to manager of the speech and hearing department. As a working mother, Gladys had less free time to volunteer in her children's activities. But she enjoyed the days when her youngest child accompanied her to work, often participating in play-based therapy with young clients. Gladys was beloved by the speech therapists who worked for her. She was a consummate professional and a mentor to her coworkers, many of whom fondly recall her as the best supervisor they ever had. Gladys was a loyal friend to her neighbors in New York, visiting them when they were sick and homebound. The Szabos lived on a small street where everyone knew everyone else, and neighborhood kids played and bicycled in the street late into the evening. The greatest sorrow of Gladys' life was the death of her oldest child, Stephen, in 1971, who was hit by a car while delivering newspapers on his bicycle. She remained a devout Catholic throughout her life, in spite of her great loss. In her later years, she served as eucharistic minister, delivering Holy Communion to people who were homebound, both to members of St. Joseph's in New York and, after she retired, as a member of St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Gladys and Steve retired to Oshkosh to be near their daughter, Susan, a pediatrician, and her husband and children. Returning to Wisconsin gave Gladys the opportunity to spend more time with her brother and sisters, as well as their children. Gladys wasted no time becoming involved in St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church after moving to Oshkosh. She volunteered with the Christ Child Society, the Care Team Ministry, and the Salvatorian Mission Warehouse. She also volunteered at Mercy Medical Hospital and the Oshkosh Senior Center. Gladys loved visiting older adults who were home-bound due to illness, both as a eucharistic minister and as a friend. While living at Evergreen, a continuing care community in Oshkosh, Gladys regularly made the rounds to see bed-ridden friends, even when she needed a walker. When Steve moved into a memory care unit at Evergreen, Gladys visited him every day, spending most of her mornings and afternoons at his side. During the pandemic, when the facility was locked down and she was not allowed to visit inside, she climbed through bushes to see her husband through his bedroom window. Gladys gave up her car after Steve's death in 2021, which left her unable to attend church as frequently as she liked. But the love she shared with the world was returned to her; now, she became the one receiving home visits from eucharistic ministers, many of whom became good friends. Gladys was diagnosed with an aggressive lymphoma in 2020 and endured four rounds of difficult chemotherapy, which put her in remission for the rest of her life. Gladys doted on her six grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She enjoyed raising flowers in Oshkosh, and continued reading until vision problems made it difficult. After her brother and sisters died, Gladys was regarded as the matriarch of the family and was treasured by her nephews and nieces, especially Diane Hinke of Fond du Lac, who often visited her. Gladys made her last move to Door County, Wisconsin in June 2024 to be near her daughter Susan, who retired to Ellison Bay. Gladys lived at Woodview Assisted Living, and then in the Care Center at Serenity Springs Senior Living, known locally as Scandia. While there, she enjoyed opportunities to attend Mass, pray the rosary and receive communion as a member of the Stella Maris parish. Gladys took part in many the activities and made some close friends. She loved being outdoors, looking at the trees and flowers and going on rides to appreciate the beauty of Door County. Gladys passed away May 30, 2025 at Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin after a heart attack. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Della and Alban Thierer; her husband, Steve; her son, Stephen; sister Ruth Donahay and Ruth's husband Justin; sister Shirley Sennett and her husband, Frank; sister Mary Fahey and her husband, Robert; as well as her brother, Melvin Thierer, and his wife, Patricia; and her sister Zelda, who died of leukemia as a child. Gladys also was preceded in death by her dear mother-in-law, Mary Szabo, as well as Steve's sisters and brothers: Alex Szabo, Helen Szabo, Margaret Szabo, John Szabo, Esther Higgins, Irene Higgins and Ernest Szabo. She will be reunited in heaven with her lifelong friend, Carol Freidel, who was the maid of honor at her wedding, and who encouraged Gladys to study speech therapy. Gladys is survived by her children Susan Szabo and her husband, Mark Beecher; Ernie Szabo and his wife, Amie; and Elizabeth and her husband. She is also survived by her grandchildren Emily, Katerina, Stephanie, T., Erin and Matthew, as well as her great-grandchild Danielle. Gladys is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who called and made time to visit her. Gladys leaves a legacy of love and a sterling example of humility and kindness to all of her friends and family. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Scandia and the compassionate nurses and physicians at Door County Medical Center. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. at Stella Maris - Sister Bay Site, on Friday, June 20, 2025 with Fr. Thomas Farrell officiating. Gladys' urn will be interred at the Ascension Cemetery in Tallman, New York, where Steve and their son, Stephen, are buried. In lieu of flowers, donations may to made to Catholic Charities, the Jawonio Foundation or the Salvatorian Mission Warehouse at St Raphael's Church. Casperson Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Sister Bay is assisting the Sazbo family.
