Susan Alice (Gilson) Peterson

Susan Alice (Gilson) Peterson, age 92, a poet, naturalist, teacher, and beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully July 25, 2025, in Door County, Wisconsin. Sue was born on March 24, 1933, in Port Washington, Wisconsin, the second of four children born to Alice (née Ubbink) and George Gilson. She grew up in a household full of laughter, creativity, and strong family ties—values that remained central throughout her life. She often spoke with fondness of her childhood, especially the close relationship she shared with her siblings: her sister Sally and brothers George “Jerry” and John. In her early twenties, Sue lived briefly in New York City, pursuing further study and soaking in the intellectual and cultural richness of Greenwich Village during the 1950s. This left a lasting impression and further ignited her lifelong passion for literature, the arts, and independent thought. Sue returned to Wisconsin to attend the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she graduated in 1958 with a degree in literature and art history. That same year, she married Charles “Chick” L. Peterson. Chick, an artist and professor, was her partner in life and in spirit. Together, they cultivated a home rich in creativity, a love of laughter, intellect, and mutual respect. They settled in Marietta, Ohio, where Chick taught art at Marietta College and Sue stayed home to raise their three daughters—Eve, Beth, and Sara. While Sue embraced her role as a mother wholeheartedly, she was never one to limit herself. In the early 1970s, with characteristic foresight and pragmatism, she returned to graduate school to earn her teaching certificate, ensuring financial stability for her family should the need arise. At that same time, Sue and Chick made a life-changing move to Ephraim, Wisconsin, relocating full-time to their summer home nestled in the beauty of Door County. There, Sue’s many passions flourished. A lifelong lover of the natural world, she became an active member of the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology and co-authored A Guide to the Birds of Door County (2004), a thoughtful and detailed field guide that has become a staple for birders in the region. The pond across from her home was one of her favorite places—a source of quiet inspiration and constant observation. She was known to sit for hours, simply watching, listening, and recording what she saw. Sue was also a gifted and widely published poet, whose work was celebrated for its clarity, simple imagery, emotional depth, and reverence for nature and daily life. Her poetry collections, including Preparing the Fields, reflect a mind attuned to the subtleties of the world and a heart grounded in gratitude. She taught poetry classes and enrolled in a large variety of courses at The Clearing Folk School in Ellison Bay, where she also served on the board for many years. There she found inspiration in everything from philosophy to loom weaving and creating lasting friendships with many of the other teachers and students, forming a lifelong connection to Door County's unique creative community. Though intellectually driven, Sue was also delightfully human and honest about her likes and dislikes. She openly admitted to hating cooking and avoided the kitchen whenever possible. She delighted instead in ordering her famous “hot fudge sundae, hold the ice cream” at restaurants—a playful contradiction that always made people smile. She had a sharp wit, a dry sense of humor, and a joyfully quirky perspective on life’s small pleasures. Her family was at the heart of everything she did. She was fiercely devoted, never missing an opportunity to connect, encourage, or simply listen. She loved long chats around the dinner table, gathering for holidays, porch visits in summer, and laughing—always laughing—with the people she loved. Sue was independent, strong-minded, and deeply empathetic. She traveled widely, read voraciously, and maintained an enduring sense of curiosity about the world and her place in it. She valued solitude but never isolation, and cultivated a life of both inner reflection and rich community. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 64 years, Chick, in 2022; her sister, Sally Ziegler; and her brothers, George “Jerry” Gilson and John E. Gilson. Sue is survived by her daughters, Eve (Ed), Beth, and Sara (Steve); her beloved grandchildren, Chris (Lisa), Eli (Maggie), Nick (Maria), Alex, Ellie, Maia (Dillon), Pete, and Emily (Cristina); great-grandchildren, Bridget, Holly, Rafael, Rosie, Ozzy, Wyatt, Adrian, and Millie; sisters-in-law, Mary, and Helen, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were lucky enough to share in her thoughtful, creative, and generous spirit. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2025 at Ephriam Moravian Cemetery. Heartfelt thanks to both Cardinal Ridge and Unity Hospice for their devoted care to Sue in her final months with us. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sue’s name to The Clearing Folk School in Ellison Bay or the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology—two places that reflect her enduring legacy of learning, observation, and care. Her words and memory will live on in the pages of her poetry, in the rustle of the leaves she loved to walk through, and in every quiet pond and singing bird that graced her view. Casperson Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Sister Bay is assisting the Peterson family. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Susan may be shared with her family through her tribute page at www.CaspersonFuneralHome.com.

Ruth Knowles Scholz

Ruth Knowles Scholz died Sunday, July 13, leaving behind a loving and remarkable family to celebrate a life well lived. Her parents, Earl and Bea (Moody) Knowles, challenged her to leave the world better than she found it, and Ruth did just that. She was born on January 24, 1927, in the small town of Weyauwega, Wisconsin, where life was idyllic and children roamed freely, their biggest concern being the next fun thing to do. At 17, during World War II, Ruth became a "government girl" in Washington, D.C., working in the fingerprint department of the FBI. In just one year, she earned enough to pay for four years of college. She kept her promise to her parents and returned home to earn her degree from the Stout Institute. In 1949, Ruth became the Door County University Extension home agent, her dream job working with Homemakers and 4-H clubs. In 1951, she met Sevastopol's new agriculture teacher, Carl Scholz. They were married on May 31, 1952, in the Presbyterian Church in Weyauwega and were blessed with four children: Marsha (Dana) Lindh, Jane (David) Raben, Jon (Joan) Scholz, and Carla Scholz. In 1965, the Scholz family joined with three others to start The Farm, a place Ruth never imagined she would find herself milking goats, bottle feeding piglets, or cleaning barns. But she embraced it all. Eventually co-owned by the Scholz and Schopf families, The Farm became a beloved destination for thousands of visitors. Carl and Ruth later became the sole owners, and after 37 meaningful years, they sold it. Ruth was a lifelong leader, frequent speaker, and dedicated volunteer. She was passionate about amplifying women's stories and often portrayed overlooked women from history. Her favorite was Mrs. Increase Claflin, the first white woman in Door County. She brought Claflin to life many times, captivating audiences with humor, insight, and a sense of purpose. As a charter member, Ruth served the Miller Art Museum for over 40 years as a dedicated board member and longtime chair of the museum volunteers. She served as Sunday School superintendent for Bay View Lutheran Church and was a steadfast supporter of Carl's environmental and educational efforts, always ready with coffee or cocoa and schnapps after nature hikes. A passionate writer and activist, Ruth was proud to have her opinions published in Time magazine three times-first at age 91 and twice more at 93. She and Carl traveled the world with close friends, including Norma and Wally Hamerburg. Ruth and Norma met in college and remained close for over 80 years, speaking regularly until Norma's recent passing. Ruth also cherished family vacations at Sunrise Lodge in Land O' Lakes, Wisconsin. In recent years, she wrote humorous and heartfelt memoirs for her grandchildren, often ending with encouragement to leave the world a better place. Her ten grandchildren-Jon (Sarah), Andy (Brittany), and Allison (Alfonso) Lindh; Anna and Molly Raben; Dustin (Kaitlyn) Scholz; Erica (Eric) Abrahamson; Emily (Scott) Walker; and Philip (Hannah) and Emma Mueller-all carry treasured memories. "Lucky Gram" as they called her, delighted in getting to know her 17 great-grandchildren and often said her best job in life was being a wife, Mom, Grandma, and Great Grandma. Ruth and Carl were blessed with nearly 70 years together, filled with love, travel, good health, and shared purpose. Who could ask for more? In addition to her husband Carl, she was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Jane Averill and Phyllis Ahlquist; her in-laws, Philip and Hattie Scholz; and sister-in-law, Harriet Scholz Kapp. We are so grateful for the staff at Anna's (now Bay View) for the kindness and care. Thank you too the for the professional and compassionate care from the staff at Unity. Please join Ruth's family to celebrate her life at Bay View Lutheran Church on August 2nd at 2:00 PM. We'd love it if you made a donation to the Miller Art Museum (https://millerartmuseum.org/membership) or Unity Hospice (https://unityhospice.org/donate) rather than giving flowers or planting trees. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Ruth may be shared with her family through her tribute page at www.huehnsfuneralhome.com.

Lois A. McDonald

Lois McDonald (nee Jessen) passed away on July 12, 2025, in Green Bay, WI, at Woodside Villa’s memory care center; she was 89 years of age. Lois was born in Chicago, IL, on December 8, 1935, where her parents, Clara and John Jessen lived while John sailed on the Great Lakes. In 1939, the family returned to Washington Island “the Island” where her dad was raised and her parents first met. Lois attended Island schools and graduated high school as valedictorian of her relatively large class of ten students in 1953. Upon graduation, Lois attended UW – Stout. After two years of college, she married Leland “Lee” McDonald, also of Washington Island, on September 17, 1955, at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple moved to Kenosha, WI, where they would reside for 44 years. Much of their summertime was spent on the Island where they shared duties operating the family’s housekeeping cottages. She and Lee raised four children in Kenosha: Kevin, Brian, Dennis, and Scott. Lois loved her family and viewed partnering with her husband and guiding her children as her primary calling. She helped her four sons to navigate their earliest years and into adulthood; when one would go afoul, her love and investment in her boys always shined through to put them on better paths. Shortly after their youngest child was born, Lois returned to college and graduated from UW – Parkside in 1972, to become a teacher. Lois would teach at Southport Elementary School in Kenosha for 23 years, retiring in 1995. She excelled at teaching and very much enjoyed the profession. Also, Lois enjoyed her “bridge club” friends and was a faithful and active member of St. Mary’s Lutheran Church in Kenosha. A few years after Lois’ retirement, Lois and Lee returned to live on Washington Island in 1999. Upon moving back to the Island, Lois rejoined Trinty Lutheran Church, where she had been baptized and confirmed. She joined the Women’s Club, supported Lions Club, American Legion events, and enjoyed being a stage crew member to the Island Players. Lois’ husband, Lee, developed health-related problems shortly after their move back home, so Lois became a primary caregiver which demanded much of her time. In the years following her husband’s death, Lois’ own health deteriorated, and she became increasingly dependent on members of her special Island community. There are countless people who aided Lois’ ability to live in her home: from WICHP volunteers to transporters of her trash; lawn and snow-plowing services; passersby who might notice something amiss would check-in on her; and devoted people who picked her up for Sunday church services, Wednesday soup dinners, Red Barn or TPAC performances, and so much more. Lois had many caregivers and helpers to whom her family is forever grateful. Without these special people, she could not have lived in her Island home as long as she did. Special mention must include: Brenda Cornell, Julie Anderson, Danelle Nickchen, Susan Wacaser, Billie Trueblood, Melanie Miller, Stacy and Jim Carson, Eileen Cornell, Jim Morris, Josh Mann, Ed and Carol O’Neil, and the Jeff and Paula McDonald family. Also, we are thankful for the care and kindness of the team at Woodside Senior Communities and Heartland Hospice. Of final mention, Lois’ beloved sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Leon Shellswick, who ensured her inclusion in family activities, and served as emergency contacts - in real and false alarms. Surviving Lois are her four sons: Kevin, Brian (Mary Beth), Dennis (Lisa), and Scott (Sara) McDonald; her two beloved sisters, Betty (Leon) Shellswick and Joanne (Dan Brandel) Jessen; her grandchildren, Kelly (Andrew) Savage, Emily (Joseph Gallo), Maggie (Jaime Lopez Rivarola), Matthew, Catherine, Nathan, Grace (Cole Milton), Clara, John and Annelise McDonald; great grandchild, Liliana; and several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Close family members preceding Lois in death, include her husband of 61 years, Leland McDonald; her parents, Clara and John Jessen; her parents-in-law, Marie and Dennis McDonald; and sisters- and brothers-in-law, Charles and Jeannette McDonald, Evelyn (nee McDonald) and Walter Swiger, and Edward Weiner. A visitation will be held at the Island’s Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, July 19, 2025, 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., with a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. For those wishing to join, a brief cemetery service will be held promptly after the funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations to Trinity Lutheran Church (www.trinitylutheran-wi.com) or the Washington Island Community Health Program (WICHP) (www.mywichp.org) are suggested. Sharen G. Young

Sharen G. Young (née Anderson), of Fish Creek, Wisconsin, died at home, surrounded by family, in the early morning hours of July 1, 2025. She was 82. Born on February 14, 1943, in Door County, Wisconsin, Sharen spent the first few years of her life with her mother, Gladys Anderson, and her maternal grandparents in Fish Creek, while her father, Floyd Anderson, was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. She didn't meet her father until he returned from the war when she was 3 years old. The young, reunited family settled initially in Chicago, where Floyd and Gladys had married and lived for a short time before Floyd entered military service. After a couple of years, they returned to Door County, residing in the family homestead on Juddville Road, and Floyd took a job at Peninsula State Park. Sharen attended school at the one-room schoolhouse in Juddville until she started high school at Gibraltar. Along the way, her younger siblings arrived: brother, Ken, and sister, Carol. Sharen's father was a state park manager for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, which meant the family moved around the state regularly, and Sharen transferred to the high school in Mellen for the last two years of her secondary education when her father became manager of Copper Falls State Park, though she spent summers working in Door County and staying with her grandparents. After graduating high school in 1960, Sharen attended Wisconsin State College-Superior (now the University of Wisconsin-Superior) but withdrew after a few terms due to the cost. Ready for a change in climate, and using local Fish Creek connections, she was able to secure a job at a Thorp-family-owned motel in St. Petersburg, Florida, and she headed south. In early 1963, she fell into a whirlwind courtship with her soon-to-be husband, John Young, and was married within a month of their meeting. The couple quickly became a small family with the birth of their son, John Jr., in 1964. Six years later, the family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, the headquarters of General Electric, for whom John Sr. worked in sales. Daughter Jocelyn was born there in 1971. The family moved to the Cleveland, Ohio, area due to a job transfer the following year. Sharen had been a homemaker until about the time her daughter started school, then she entered a nursing program at nearby Lorain County Community College. Upon graduating, she took a full-time job at Lutheran Medical Center (now part of the Cleveland Clinic) in downtown Cleveland, first working on the medical-surgical floors and soon moving to a position in the cardiac intensive care unit, where she eventually became a shift supervisor. After nearly 20 years living in the far western suburbs of Cleveland, Sharen and John saw an opportunity to relocate to Door County, where they had retained close ties and Sharen's parents were living in retirement, and where they had always intended to retire themselves. They built a home on Juddville Road next to the family homestead in 1991, and Sharen took a job leading the cardiac rehab department at the hospital in Sturgeon Bay. She worked for about two decades leading a small team running cardiac stress tests and other diagnostics, and fully developing the hospital's "Hearty Conditioning" program - the highlight of her nursing career - for patients recovering from heart attacks or cardiac surgery. Sharen was always a woman of deep faith, becoming especially involved in church activities after moving to the Cleveland area, and she devoted much more of her time to church initiatives in Door County in her retirement. A member of Community Church of Fish Creek since 1991, over the years she was engaged with various women's ministries, assisted the church treasurer with accounting for weekly offerings and annual giving statements, and eventually led the very active Missions Committee. She also represented the church for several years in the local Bridges ministry to foreign students working in Door County for the summer. In her retirement, Sharen also set aside considerable time for various Bible studies, in particular the international Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) program. For several years, she led BSF groups for women in Sturgeon Bay before stepping back to be a regular class member again. Years of study with her BSF classmates led to several long-lasting and cherished friendships. Sharen was a dedicated volunteer outside of church as well, often in the long-term care unit at Scandia Village in Sister Bay. Most recently, she also volunteered faithfully at Bargains Unlimited resale shop, doing intake work year-round, until she became ill and could no longer commit to a regular schedule or perform the physically demanding work. Sharen's spirits were buoyed immeasurably by the faithful support of the many friends who visited, called, texted, and sent cards while she was under hospice care at home and as her physical strength waned during the last months of her life. Sharen was preceded in death by her husband of 59 ½ years, John W. Young Sr.; her parents, Floyd and Gladys (née Fairchild) Anderson; and a grandson, Beren Mattingly. She is survived by her son, John Young Jr., of Fish Creek, WI; her daughter, Jocelyn (Jacob) Stanton, of West Des Moines, IA; her grandson, August MacFarland, of Salida, CO; her granddaughter, Anya Young, of Johnston, IA; her brother, Kenneth (Mary) Anderson, of East Troy, WI; and her sister, Carol Anderson, of Baraboo, WI. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Community Church of Fish Creek, 9420 Cottage Row, Fish Creek, WI 54212. Officiant: Pastor Daniel Bowman. Visitation will be held at the church prior to the service, from noon to 1:30 p.m. A private interment will be held at Blossomberg Cemetery inside Peninsula State Park at a future time. In lieu of flowers, any donations in Sharen's name may be directed to the Missions Fund at Community Church of Fish Creek, PO Box 70, Fish Creek, WI 54212 (online giving at www.ccfishcreek.org), the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (cholangiocarcinoma.org/donate), Bible Study Fellowship (bsfinternational.org/support), or to another charity of the donor's choice. Sharen's family thanks the attentive staff of Unity Hospice for their supportive care, practical advice, and welcome guidance over the last few months. Casperson Funeral Home is assisting the Young family. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Sharen may be shared with her family through her tribute page at www.CaspersonFuneralHome.com.

Wesley Dworakowski

Wesley Dworakowski, age 74 of Sturgeon Bay, passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at Door County Medical Center with his wife by his side. He was born to the late Stanley and Janina (Gierek) Dworakowski on September 1, 1950, in Wroclaw, Poland. On April 12, 1971, Wesley was united in marriage to Elizabeth Wieclawska in Warsaw, Poland, and they remained married for over 54 years until his passing. Wesley emigrated with his wife and children from Poland in 1982, settling in and making a new life in Chicago. He worked in numerous automotive body repair facilities, working his way up from an auto body combo technician to shop manager. Eventually Wesley established his own business, which he successfully built from the ground up. He prided himself on hard, honest work, customer service, and a detail-oriented product he could deliver without hesitation. He carried on this enterprise for almost a decade, at which time, he sold the business and moved on to managing automotive body repair shops until his professional retirement. Along the journey, Wesley made countless friends, both professionally and personally, many of these relationships spanning decades into today. He always found time and energy to help others in all walks of life, placing their interests before himself. Wesley's life passion outside of work was fishing, which ran in tandem with boating. Many family vacations were really fishing destination trips in disguise. Wesley could fish from sunup to sundown, always netting a catch, when other anglers failed.
