Daniel M. Brown

Dan Brown, 68, Kewaunee, was born on January 7, 1957, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. On July 2, 1976, he married the love of his life, Kathy, and together they built a family and a lifetime of memories rooted in love, laughter, and adventure. Dan spent his early years in Nebraska before moving with his family to California in the mid-1980s, where he pursued his entrepreneurial spirit by opening and running his own restaurant for roughly 9 years. He later settled in Wisconsin, where he dedicated more than three decades of service to the United States Postal Service, retiring proudly as the Postmaster of Two Rivers, Wisconsin. A man defined by his generosity and courage, Dan loved his family above all else. He was the kind of person who would always lend a hand, who instantly connected with people, and who left a lasting impression through his positivity and warmth. He had an ambitious drive in everything he pursued, paired with a patriotic spirit that guided his life. Dan’s accomplishments were as varied as his passions. He was an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), a Master Scuba Diver, a licensed pyrotechnician, a charter fishing Captain, and was ordained to perform weddings. He devoted himself to coaching youth baseball, softball, and trap shooting, always proud to support his children and his community. His generosity extended further into his community by supporting local nonprofits, sponsoring scholarships, and most notably creating the Brownfest 4th of July Fireworks show in Kewaunee. With his vision, skill, and passion, Dan put on the best firework shows, each year bigger, brighter, and better than the last. What began as a small family display grew into a beloved tradition that drew people from near and far to enjoy the spectacle. Dan also had a lifelong love for animals. He took great pride in driving his Belgian horses and riding his horses, and he cherished the companionship of his dogs. He was especially fond of his golden boy, Sir Winston. His wonderful sense of humor, paired with his love of a good laugh, made him a joy to be around and deepened the many friendships he created throughout his life. Beyond his professional and civic contributions, Dan had a deep love for the outdoors and countless hobbies that reflected his adventurous and creative spirit. He enjoyed basketball, football, baseball, hunting, fishing, trap shooting, snowmobiling, motorcycling, bowling, camping, and traveling in the family motorhome. He loved music throughout his life from concerts to listening, more importantly playing the piano and drums with his family. He had a talent for woodworking and logging, a knack for fixing anything that needed repair, and for baking bread. He loved his firework displays as well as building his own fireworks and rockets. Dan lived a life full of purpose, kindness, and joy, touching everyone who knew him. His legacy will live on through the love he shared, the traditions he built, and the countless lives he influenced along the way. He enjoyed making memories that would last a lifetime with everyone whose lives he touched. Dan is survived by his wife Kathy; his children, Liza (Nathan) Vandenlangenberg, Casco, Justin (Alyssa) Brown, Kewaunee; his grandchildren, Taylor Brown, Willow, Wren, and Hudson Vandenlangenberg, and Addison Johnson. He was preceded by his parents, Lois and Murray Brown; and a brother, Mark A. Brown. A visitation will take place on Monday, September 8, 2025, from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Roy A. Swanson

Roy Austin Swanson, 89, of Sister Bay, passed away at Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay on August 10, 2025.      Roy captivated people with his sincere enthusiasm, humor and love of life. He was a true outside artist who thrived on reclaiming materials to create sculpture, collage books and masks. He was a seeker, studying many different religious and mystical teachings and practices that inspired him to write poetry and magical stories. He was very private, but these writings captured his deep feelings and wonder.      Roy lived an original life. He was born in New York, NY on December 13, 1935, to Ralph and Rose (Kruhm) Swanson. He remembered losing his dad in a plane crash at the age of 4 and shortly after he moved between several homes, his mothers, his grandparents and the George Junior Republic a residential center in Freeville, New York where he worked on their farm, inspiring his life-long love of plants and gardening.      Roy lived as a strong man, and he lived a brave life. He was a contributor wherever he landed. He joined the military at age 18 and proudly became a Navy Seal performing underwater demolition tasks as a “Frogman”.      In the late 1960’s Roy moved to San Francisco where his creative and adventurous spirit began to flourish. He was married to Krishni (Olson) and together had a daughter, Anna. He loved to share stories about his California coast days, as a puppeteer, a Montessori teacher and his most proud role, as a coordinator of the San Francisco Community Gardens.      Roy loved talking about soil quality - it was a metaphor for his life. He knew growth was only possible when your soil was fed wholesome nutrients that supported strong root systems. He applied this perspective in practice with his own vegetable and flower gardens. Nothing made him happier than collecting flowers to create one of his elaborate, whimsical floral arrangements and hand it off to one of the people or places he loved.      Roy journeyed to Sister Bay in 1995 with the encouragement of his good friend Tom Horsley who he had met while gardening at the Westerbeke Ranch in Sonoma, CA. He continued to make a livelihood for himself by befriending and working as a gardener at Lettuce Unite, McKeefry Yeomans, Lautenbach Orchards and Hidden Acres. All these people became family for Roy. He was very grateful for all his friends, especially the Mead family who always made his holidays special and his game days with Zach and Mary Beth were something to look forward to.      Roy loved telling his stories to all who would listen. Many will remember him as an engaging, distinguished looking elderly man with bushy eyebrows, sitting in the red leather chair of the original Base Camp where his good friend Joel Kersebet gave him a coffee and delicious pastry every morning. Alicia, Joel, Sam and Stella Kersebet were a second family to Roy. The other treasures of his daily life in Sister Bay were the kind and welcoming staff at Al Johnsons who enjoyed his charming ways and sincerely looked out for him. In his last years in Sister Bay, he could be found happily people-watching on the bench outside the Post Office, editing and printing photos with his friends at Innovative Printing or in the Sister Bay Library where he had another comfy leather chair, next to the fireplace, where he took in the news and a continuous list of books, music and films that was as wide-ranging and imaginative as his curious mind.      He was preceded in death by his daughter Anna in 2024 and one of his best friends in life, Tim Kay in 2019.      Roy became a special part of our family later in his life and we want to celebrate his life on the Equinox with a potluck picnic that will take place in the meadow at Three Sisters-home of the Kays, (Kathleen, Tim, Grace, Lucy and Ava) on September 21 beginning at 4pm. All are welcome, his art collection will be a part of this celebration of his life. 1491 Hill Road Sister Bay.      Casperson Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Sister Bay is assisting with arrangements. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Roy may be shared through his tribute page at www.CaspersonFuneralHome.com. THE HIGH FLYER BY ROY SWANSON SOARING IN THAT QUIET PLACE THE HIGH FLYER DREAMS OF DEEP BLUE SPACE HEARS THE LIGHT THAT STILLS THE MIND AND LEAVES THIS WORLD FAR, FAR BEHIND. THE SECRET I DO BELIEVE IS TO LOOK BEYOND THE SHAPE AND FORM OF THINGS. TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES OF WHAT IS SAID AND WHAT IS NOT, OF WHAT IS THOUGHT AND WHAT IS NOT. ONE DAY, THIS WILL GUIDE US TO THAT SILENT NIGHT AND GRACE OUR LIVES WITH GOLDEN HOLY LIGHT.

Ingrid Marie Helen Lawrenz

Ingrid Marie Helen Lawrenz, of the Town of Liberty Grove, passed away at home on August 25, 2025, at the age of 68 after a brief but difficult illness. She was born in Door County on January 14, 1957, to the late Harlow and Lucille Nelson. To Ingrid, Door County was always her true home, though she and her husband Mel lived in Waukesha for more than 40 years. Two years ago they returned to Door County, living on the land her immigrant Swedish great-grandfather settled and farmed 150 years ago. Ingrid and Mel both attended Carroll College in Waukesha as a married couple. She went on to get a master’s degree and was a professional counselor for more than 20 years. Ingrid was a loving and nurturing mother to daughter Eva, born in 1987 and died in 2017, and son Christopher. The natural world was her joy, including watching birds and other wildlife, and cultivating beautiful gardens. Her cats were close companions over the years and laid with her in the final days when cancer was doing its mean work. Ingrid made deep bonds with friends and family who benefited from her generosity, grace, kindness, and respect. Ingrid's faith in Jesus Christ, going back to her childhood, was deep and genuine and unshakable. She knew illness and fragility but was strong and persevering. A tough Swede, in the best sense. There will be a funeral service for Ingrid in Door County, and a few days later a memorial service in Brookfield, WI. John Edward Kacmarynski

It is with profound love and sadness that we announce the passing of John Edward Kacmarynski, who entered eternal rest on August 19, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on June 1, 1940, in Mallard, Iowa, John grew up on the family farm, where he learned the values of hard work, perseverance, and faith. He graduated from Mallard High School and attended Iowa State University, carrying his deep Iowa roots throughout his life. On July 6, 1963, John married the love of his life, Mary Jeanne (McNally), in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love, family, and adventure. John is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary Jeanne; and their four children, Jeanne Brauns (Jeff), Pamela Kacmarynski, John Kacmarynski (Colleen Nickolette), and David Kacmarynski (Jenn). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Heather Paul (John), Tyler Karnopp (Amanda), Lauren and Zachary Brauns (Kate), Caden, Ella, and Reid Kacmarynski; and a doting great-grandfather to Patrick Paul and Silas Karnopp. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Twait (Tom); and his cherished in-laws, Patricia and Robert Grace of Des Moines, IA, Charlie, Paul, Sheila, John and Peg McNally of Emmetsburg, IA, Kris McNally of New Holstein, WI, and Larry Bangart of Chilton, WI. John is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will deeply miss him. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Kacmarynski; his siblings, Bernard Kacmarynski, Philip Kacmarynski, Veronica Schmitt, Isabelle Smith, and MaryAnn Wagner. John began his career with Twin Draulic and ARPS before joining Marine Travelift in 1981 as Vice President of Marine Travelift. For 26 years, he traveled the world selling yacht-handling equipment, forging lasting friendships across the globe and building a reputation for his warmth, humor, and dedication. He retired in 2007 after an extraordinary career, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and connection. After retirement, John devoted himself to helping others. He especially treasured his time volunteering with Door Tran, where he provided transportation for the elderly, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. His compassionate spirit touched countless lives, and he finally "retired" a second time from volunteer service in 2022. Outside of work and volunteering, John embraced life's adventures. He loved snowmobiling, beginning with his very first RUPP snowmobile, and over the years, he and Mary Jeanne traveled together, visiting 35 of the 50 states with family and friends. John also enjoyed prairie dog hunting and made countless trips out to the Dakotas pursuing this passion. Despite his travels, he never lost touch with his farming roots, returning to Iowa well into his 70's to help harvest crops alongside family and friends. John had a special gift for connecting with people. Whether he was flipping through a phone book to find other Kacmarynskis to call and confirm a family connection, swapping stories during his travels, or sharing laughs with friends, he never met a stranger. Perhaps most memorably, John was a master storyteller. His family, friends, and even the staff at his assisted living community were often entertained by his endless supply of tales - told with wit, warmth, and charm. His stories kept memories alive and made everyone around him feel connected. A man of deep faith, John was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he found comfort and strength throughout his life. John will be remembered for his kindness, adventurous spirit, and the joy he brought into every room. His legacy lives on through the countless stories he shared, the lives he touched, and the love he gave so freely.
