Jeanette H. Stangland

Jeanette Hope Stangland (née McBride) passed away unexpected at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay, WI on September 22, 2024. Jeanette was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 12, 1950, to parents Gene Allen McBride and Eunice Areta McBride (née Longenecker). The daughter of missionaries, she spent part of her youth in the field of Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau), West Africa, before returning to the US to finish middle and high school in Mountain Lake, MN. During that time, she was raised and cared for by her second family, her aunt Mary (Gerhard Lowell) Fast (née Longenecker), and her children, “brother” Gerhard Allen, and “sisters” Lenita, Twyla, and Margaret. After high school, Jeanette attended three-year Diploma training at Mounds Midway School of Nursing in St. Paul MN to become a registered nurse and subsequently had a long career first in the hospital environment, later in infectious control, cardiac rehab, and finally in the long-term care setting. Jeanette eventually retired in 2014 after several decades as a Director of Nursing (DON) for long-term care facilities in Portage, Waunakee, and Middleton in Wisconsin, with the last being in Sturgeon Bay. During her time as DON, she was a member of the State DON council and served as its president for two years exhibiting the compassion and commitment, she felt toward the appropriate care of those who are vulnerable and in need. After retirement, she served as a nationwide consultant for long-term care facilities in need of DON guidance. She entered into marriage on August 21, 1970, to Reverend Gary Bernard Stangland and was married for over 50 years. As part of that partnership in the church, Gary and Jeanette served parishes in Nevada, North Dakota — the state that saw the birth of their two sons Eric and Jason — Montana, and finally Wisconsin. Her role often took the form of music, and as a talented piano and organ player she provided music to Gary’s services with the occasional unintended consequence of “unsupervised” young children alone in a front pew with nothing better to do than throw Cheerios at their father during his sermon. She gave back some of her piano talent in form of lessons to young people. Outside of work and the church, she juggled raising two sons in the home — often choosing to work night shifts early in life to remain home with the children during the day — and her prolific ability at craft working, enjoying all manner of crafts with special attention to sewing and counted cross-stitch, selling her wares at craft events and eventually her own Etsy page, DJCreations. She was working on a cross-stitch Santa the day of her passing. Later in life, she travelled with Gary after his retirement and was often seen in the presence of her Shih Tzu companions Baxter and later Kit. Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents, but is survived by Gary Stangland of Sturgeon Bay, WI, two sons, Jason (Joli) Todd Stangland of Verona, WI, and Eric (Devon) Eugene Stangland with one grandson, Calvin Carter, of Midland, MI. As the only daughter of a father with seven, and a mother with eleven adult siblings, she has an extensive extended family in the western United States. Consistent with her desires, cremation has taken place under the care of Forbes Funeral Home, Sturgeon Bay, WI, and a private family ceremony to celebrate her life will be scheduled at a future date. The ashes will be scattered in the Trinity Lutheran Church All Saints Memorial Garden in Midland, MI. In lieu of flowers, please consider either a donation in Jeanette’s name to a charity of your choice or the All Saints Memorial Garden, and share a memory.

Francis "Fran" Felhofer

It is with heavy hearts (and a few smiles in remembrance) that we announce the passing of Francis "Fran” Felhofer, who left us on September 25th, 2024. A man of immense talent, vision, and humor, Fran was not only an entrepreneur and community leader but a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who made a lasting impact on all who knew him. Born on February 26, 1933, to the late Frank and Gladys (Kreyche) Felhofer, Fran grew up in Sturgeon Bay. After graduating from Sturgeon Bay High School, he attended Marquette University before returning to Door County to join the family business. Family was the core of Fran’s life. He and Carol Jean Bosman were married on December 29, 1956, and raised five wonderful children together: Michael, Paula, Ellen, Matthew, and Mark. Their home was always filled with love, laughter, and the warmth of a man who cherished every moment spent with those he loved most. Fran never took life too seriously. He was a notorious prankster, always keeping friends, family, and colleagues on their toes with a mischievous grin and a clever joke up his sleeve (Rest in Peace, Skippy). Fran was also a master at hiding Easter baskets in the most creative ways, turning a simple holiday tradition into a fun, laughter-filled challenge. His humor brought lightness to every room, balancing his reputation as a respected leader with his love for laughter. Fran was a man driven by integrity, deeply respected by all who crossed his path. His entrepreneurial mindset transformed Bay Marine from the Cherryland service station his father started into a thriving marine enterprise. There wasn’t an idea Fran couldn’t turn into a business. His inspired vision, unending passion, and remarkable work ethic still resonate in the continued success of Bay Marine. An avid scuba diver, he was involved in major shipwreck rescue and recovery missions, including the schooner Jennibelle and the S.S. Cedarville. Frequently consulted for his nautical expertise, Fran even led a team of divers in raising the anchor of the schooner Oak Leaf, which was enjoyed for decades outside of Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. Fran’s deep connection to the water was as steadfast as his commitment to his family and community. Fran was a pillar in his church and community, deeply committed to his Catholic faith and active in organizations like Kiwanis. He always had time for those in need, offering a helping hand and leadership in all aspects of life. When not working or giving back to the community, Fran cherished time at the hunting cabin, especially the annual deer camp trip, a tradition that brought him great joy. Preceding Fran in death are his beloved wife of 67 years Carol Felhofer, parents Frank and Gladys Felhofer, daughter-in-law Nancy (Carnahan) Felhofer, great-grandson Finley Felhofer, siblings Virginia “Ginny” Felhofer, William “Bud” Felhofer, and Margaret “Peg” Kirley; in-laws Gerry Bosman and Al Hanson. His legacy is carried on by his five children: Michael (Tonya) Felhofer, Paula (Ron) Kerscher, Ellen (special friend, Joe) Felhofer, Matthew (Nancy) Felhofer, and Mark (Gina) Felhofer, his grandchildren Emily (Paul) Meyer, Christopher (Michelle) Kerscher, Megan (Justin) Kerscher-Walsh, Nathan (Megan) Felhofer, Benjamin (Hannah) Felhofer, Sarah (Chase) Graff, Jack (Bridget) Thomas, Angela Thomas, Sydney Felhofer, Stephanie Felhofer, Grace Felhofer, and Ryan Felhofer; great-grandchildren Braxton Meyer, Micah Felhofer, Liam Felhofer, Harrison Felhofer, and Athena Thomas; in-laws Marie Felhofer, Joanne Bosman, Georgiana “Georgi” Hanson, and Peter (Mary) Bosman; and the many people whose lives he touched through his work, his faith, and his community involvement. Fran’s life will be honored with a visitation on September 29, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Forbes Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on September 30, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Forbes Funeral Home, with a visitation starting at 10:00 AM. Those attending are invited to share stories, laughter, and memories of a man who lived life to the fullest. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Door County YMCA or the Door County Maritime Museum, continuing Fran’s mission of making the world a better place, one project at a time.

He was born August 13, 1959, in Sturgeon Bay, the son of the late George and Muriel (Tenner) Savage. Tom graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1977. He went to work for five years on a tugboat for Hannah Marine where he enjoyed traveling the Great Lakes and visiting the large cities delivering their cargo, usually oil, gas or coal. Tom would be gone for several weeks at a time and eventually decided he missed too much at home and moved on to construction. On June 15, 1991, he married Gail L. Prichett in Baileys Harbor. Tom became a skilled carpenter over the years and enjoyed the challenge of the job and seeing the result of his hard work and attention to detail in the finished project. This work continued until his retirement in 2019. Over the years, Tom struggled with back pain and other health issues, but you would never know it because it never stopped him from living life to the fullest. His beloved dog, Florence, was a big help in that way; she came into his life at retirement and kept him going through health adversities. An avid outdoorsman with deer hunting being his greatest passion, any opportunity to be outdoors in the woods was welcomed by Tom. Gardening, hiking, especially with his wife, Gail, listening to music, cutting firewood or making wood were some of his other favorite activities. Reflecting on his youth, growing up on Pine Street in Sturgeon Bay was a great time in Tom’s life. He often talked about those happy days spent with the neighborhood kids and their families, many of whom he still considered his friends. He was a member of the Sturgeon Bay Rod and Gun Club, was active in the Conservation Congress, and was also a DNR trapping instructor. She spent countless hours outdoors gardening around her home, hiking through Potawatomi State Park, Crossroads at Big Creek, and as many Land Trust Preserves as she and Craig could find. Peggy was a lifelong member of the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church. She particularly enjoyed music at church services, working in the nursery, and attending retreats at Mt. Morris Camp and Conference Center in Wautoma. Many will fondly remember Peggy for her years of bus driving for the church’s annual evening of Christmas caroling. Peggy's life will be celebrated with a memorial service held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2024 with Rev. Dr. Matthew R. Knapp, Sr. officiating. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church on Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. The service will be livesteamed via the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@sturgeonbaymoravianchurch6367). Memorial gifts may be made in Peggy's honor to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org); Sunshine Resources of Door County (55 W. Yew Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235; www.sunshineresources.org); or a charity of your choice. "Our family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to Tracy Vreeke, Mary Lou Plummer, and the staff at Anna's House in New Franken for their care, attention, and friendship through Peggy’s final years." Arrangements have been entrusted with Huehns Funeral Home, Inc. & Door County Crematory LLC in Sturgeon Bay. David G. Thompson

David G. Thompson, 82, of Baileys Harbor passed away peacefully at home on September 3, 2024, after a complicated set of health issues. David lived a life infused with art. No matter the circumstances, he always had a sketchbook by his side and a drawing pen in his shirt pocket, even in hospital rooms or in glove compartments. Even in the toughest of times, David stayed positive and upbeat. Throughout his life he wore many hats in addition to his artistry: photographer, harbormaster, port captain, ship keeper, carpenter, bartender, model maker, antique clock repairer–and husband and friend to his wife of 44 years, Linda Thompson. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, to the late Valentine and Jane Thompson on June 23, 1942. As a child, his family frequently moved with his father’s job. His most formative years in Kingston, Ontario, were especially influential as this was where he learned to sail and thus began his love of water and boats. His family returned to Janesville, Wisconsin, where he graduated from high school. He attended Layton School of Art and transferred to UW-Madison, earning an MFA in art. Because his father had introduced him to the beauty of Door County on a fishing trip, he moved to Fish Creek. He worked several summers at Peninsula Players. He became a bartender at The Rock and harbormaster at the Fish Creek Town Dock. He and Linda opened the Village Photographer, an old-time photo studio. During the winter, he became port captain for the Great Lakes winter lay-up fleet in Sturgeon Bay. He was caretaker for the Ryerson for several years as it sat idle near the bridge. During these years, he could often be seen rowing his double-oared Whitehall on the waters of Green Bay. He was passionate and loved everything about boats, but after he retired, he decided to learn everything he could about antique clocks, working for Draeb Jewelry as a horologist in training. Skilled in pen and ink, David became well known for his annual Christmas cards. He never turned down a chance to make a drawing for someone, including medical staff. He spent endless hours making ship models of historical boats that included detailed miniatures. Imaginative in his own way, he dabbled in pastels, watercolors, assemblages, and more. His journals are filled with sketches, poetry, quotes, and ideas for new projects. David had a close connection with cousins Julie Howard, Martha Castro, and Hunter Gullett. He will be deeply missed by his wife Linda; in-laws Mary and Jim Thomas, sons, Jeff and Mark; Susan Messner Whipp, daughter Myra; and Julie and Randy Tryczak, children, Sam and Ellie. The family would like to thank retired nurse Holly Runquist and friend Tom Gallagher for their devoted help in time of need. He received personal care under the team at Aurora oncology (Dr. Gautam) and palliative care (Ashley Wolfgram) in Green Bay. The nurses at Home Health were nothing short of wonderful, with special thanks to Sheila for her assistance. Memorials in honor of David’s life may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Door County Maritime Museum, or Wisconsin Public Radio for its jazz programming. David loved to walk any shoreline. He wrote, “The answer may not be at the beach, but we should at least check.” A celebration of his life and art will take place on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Fish Creek Old Town Hall from 1-4 p.m. www.huehnsfuneralhome.com
